Rick Barnes gets $200,000 raise from Texas

Texas men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes received a $200,000 pay raise today, less than two weeks after turning down overtures from Kentucky, that pushes his annual salary to $2 million.

The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved the increase, which keeps him among the highest-paid coaches in college basketball. The deal also adds two years to Barnes’ contract, which runs through 2017. v Barnes has led the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament in each of his nine seasons, including the Sweet 16 in four of the last six years. The Longhorns advanced to the Final Four in 2003.

In past seasons, Barnes has been linked to vacancies with North Carolina State, UCLA, Indiana and Kentucky. He received a $500,000 raise after Texas’ run to the Elite Eight in 2006.

AUSTIN (AP) - University of Texas regents approved a $200,000 raise for Rick Barnes on Monday, boosting his salary to $2 million per year.

Barnes has led the Longhorns to the NCAA tournament in each of his nine seasons, including a trip to the Final Four in 2003.

"This is a good thing for Rick and a good thing for the University of Texas," athletic director DeLoss Dodds said. "Coach Barnes has been terrific for the university. His record on the court and our players' success in the classroom speak for themselves, and we're also a top-five program in the nation financially under his leadership. He's the kind of person we want here at Texas."

Probably so, but it would be hard to walk away from a $1,000,000.00 annuity. Especially two of them. Financially he is set, he has the facilities and has been able to recruit the top players across the country. What else does ne need.

wow good one...and atm's last final four was when????  nice effort though

9 straight NCAA tournaments, 8 straight 20 win seasons, 4 out of the last 5 years into the Sweet 16, 2003 Final Four..3 NBA First round draft picks last year, and the likely #1 or #2 overall pick again this year.  Yeah youre right thats not success at all.  Especially this year starting 4 true freshmen.  SO lets go back 9 years that Barnes has been at THE University of Texas....compared to atm.. that would mean going back to 1998-99 for them....5 losing seasons..one .500 season and granted the last 3 years over 20 wins.... seems UT wins that argument again, but thanks for playing

Where in my post did I say that A&M was better than UT?  Maybe instead of focusing on being so condescending you should work on sentence comprehension. 

I know that your idea of fun is to belittle others and be pretentious, but seriously, do you think Rick Barnes has fully utilized the talent he has horded during his tenure?  Is he just a great recruiter?  The Texas games I watched this year seemed like there was no true offense - just get out of Durant's way. 

It seems that Texas should be in the Sweet 16 4 outta the last 5 years, I mean they're THE (ALL CAPS!!!!!!) University of Texas.  Texas is going to win the recruiting battle with any other Texas team probably 70 - 80 % of the time, right?  And now Barnes is getting studs from outside of the state, too.  It seems like UT teams underacheive during the conference season...

I would call those accomplishments significantly succesful, and yes I do think he has fully used the talent Texas has had.  This year was a bit strange, and to a degree you are right the offense was get the ball to Durant and get out of the way.  As talented as Barnes' Texas teams have been none of them I think were real contenders for a national title.  And with the landscape of basketball being to come out early every year it speaks even more to his abilities as a coach to keep putting out the teams with the records and tournament bids he has.  If LaMarcus Aldridge, PJ Tucker, Daniel Gibson had all stayed this year with DJ Augustin and Kevin Durant then there is a bigger case for saying they should make final four and compete for the title.

You're right,  barnesing and franing are very similar, but to fran means you also show a lack of testicles, your word means nothing, and you're so self-absorbed that you create assinine words like "frantastic".

And on early departures hurting the upper echelon programs such as Texas and the players you named, Dennis, (other than Florida) what programs have not had to deal with this problem?

it does seem to happen quite a bit...good teams recover and i really dont think that a&m needs him as much as they just want him
