Come on guys, don't let one person come on here and mess this entire thread up.  Here's what most people know.  Newton is a very good team.  Cameron is a very good team.  Their both in the semi-finals for goodness sake.  These two schools have very good football programs year in and year out.  And there is a little history between these two programs that date as far back as the early to mid 70's and as recent as 2010.  It should be a great game and I think the winner of this game will be the favorite to win the state title.  I hope both teams come out injury free and Go Big YOE!!!

I agree and have said so. None of this other is aimed at Cameron and their team because I do know exactly what you said. It is aimed at one person and one person only. And all in fun. I in no way meant to insult the Cameron team or it's great fans. These two programs and their history with each other is what makes this matchup so interesting, exciting, and anticipated by me. Your right about injury free, but Go mighty Eagles! :)
2. If parents are shopping their kids around to be great athletes and looking for turf and jumbotrons to assess the quality of enrolling their kids there, they have no idea what makes a great athlete. Every GREAT athlete I ever knew, God made them. And the truly great ones worked their butts off to get better. You cannot make a great running back out of a kid that runs a 5.0 40. I don't care how many turf fields you put him on. Now, any athlete can enhance their abilities with hard work, determination, coaching, and support from their parents. And to say that Carthage( as an example) has seen it's success due to turf field and community support to buy a jumbo tron, shows how much someone really knows about what it takes to make a team. And I am not missing the point. The point is I do not believe there are massive numbers of people shopping their kids around for athletic purposes. I do not believe turf fields and jumbo trons make programs successful. I do believe economic growth brings not only these things but influx of people and numbers of children which brings with that the talent of those kids. The more kids to choose from, the more natural talent to choose from. Couple this with good coaching and community support and success might follow.

I guess you commies don't believe in free speech. Or is it that you're upset because someone doesn't worship setx football? I can't express my opinion (even in clean language) without a moderator changing my name to get me to leave / anger me? Nice one setx...  :P

Aw man. We're having the commie meetings again? I didn't know and have missed them. They were always so informative and just plain fun. :)

And next week there will be none! Get ready for another southeast Texas "woulda, coulda, shoulda" playoff year...
and who is your school or schools you support? are they still in the playoffs?

Mr. Buddy I think it's obvious he supports the mighty Chickens from Chokeville. See his avatar?  ;D

A highly overrated Newton is going to get rolled big time!  :P

Yoe -    42
Newton - 7

This is a pretty funny statement, but was wondering exactly what criteria was used to arrive at this conclusion. I think there may be 13 teams that have a little different opinion than this. Just saying...... 8)

Newton has played nothing but chumps. They are beyond overrated and will finally meet their match in the biggest upset in thus far. They go in with the big head and come out with the big L in this one...

So your saying that ya'll are the next ones in line?
6. We'll find out Friday night if Cameron can run. One thing Newton does not lack is team speed. Defensive line has scored with long fumble recoveries and an int that it took 65 yards to catch him before he scored. A stable of running backs that only need a hint of a hole and they can't be caught. And all this with 7 suited out Seniors. 3 start on each side of the ball and the rest are Juniors and Sophomores.

Hey, ChampionEagles, what did I tell you?  Go get 'em, Newton!
Yep. Eagles just gotta continue to play lights out. And I think they will, but I've already kinda got a bit of a knot in my stomach. Newton and Cameron have had some unbelievable games in the playoffs through the years. Go Eagles!

I'm not saying that it can't or won't be done. Even the Yankees lose. Newton without a doubt has an exceptional team. I really want for them to represent SETX with a state championship. But aside from that...when's the last time we've had a championship from this area. Even the year Coldsprings made it...they got the heck beat out of them by Carthage. Making it 2,3,4 rounds isn't always a great success when you get trashed when you get there. Take a road trip to some of the schools I'm talking about. Go to Navasota and ask yourself if WOS had that much of a chance. Every year we have all these ''great'' teams that we are so sure will make deep, deep runs. And they don't. WOS, Silsbee, Nederland, East Chambers, Newton,... I'm just saying..our ''great'' teams eventually get beat and usually beat bad. Newton seems to be an exception this year so far. We do not have a single school in this area going ''all out'' on athletics. We will always be second fiddle until that happens.

To answer your question it was Newton in 2005. Newton also went to the finals in 2004 and lost to Boyd. When the state is slashing the schools budgets to the bone and beyond, I think your argument about funding athletics is way off base. Athletics is not a core subject and should not be treated as one simply to justify putting a better team on the field. I love football and think it helps the young men that play in many, many ways. But a quality education helps more numbers of students to try to prepare to move into society in a productive way. This should always outway any gains on the athletic field. Now the Newton athletic program has been successful with high school wins. But it has also allowed a large number of kids the opportunity to get a college education that otherwise might not have. They don't call McNeese State Newton east for nothing. I don't think under the current economic times that spending one dollar more for athletics at any school could be justified. JMHO
10. What the heck. I agree, ten minutes for nothing. What an absolute crazy assessment of what it takes to win. It takes kids that are willing to work, parents that stand behind the coaches and expect their kids to strive to be better. It takes a tradition of expecting to win by working hard and having high goals set to achieve. It takes a fan base that supports all the kids and coaches and acknowledges the achievements of the current team by comparing them to past winners. I believe I remember Coach Barbay saying one time something along the lines of "Our kids don't care if they play in a cow pasture. They just want to win". Who can argue with that? Newton does not have many dollars, but they do have a pretty efficient system to produce quality athletes. Purple pride forever! Go Eagles! :)
11. Eagles versus the Yoemen. Should be a game not to miss. Both teams have very good programs and a long history of playoff appearances facing each other. Some of the most exciting wins as well as heartbreaking losses have been a part of this series. Newton beat Cameron Yoe with a 37 yd field goal with just seconds left in 1974 to continue their march to their first state championship. In the early '80's, during Anthony Byerly's senior year, Cameron Yoe advanced when a tie on score went to penetrations which were tied and then to first downs which Cameron advanced on because they had 1 more during the last drive of the game. I think I got that right. Last year Cameron Yoe dominated Newton sending them exiting the playoffs. Can Newton return the favor this year?
