1. Just wanted to give all the area coaches a reminder that the Evadale Catfish Festival will be holding the Catfish All Star Games once again this year. There will be six games in total this year. On Thursday night May 12th the 4A/5A girls and guys games will be held at 6 and 7:30 PM. On Friday, May 13th the 2A/3A girls and guys games will be a 6 & 7:30 PM and on Saturday afternoon May 14th the 1A girls and guys will tip off at 3 and 4:30 PM. Forms will be sent to all area schools for coaches to nominate senior players for the teams. This will be the forth year for the All Star games in some form or fashoin, but it will be the very first year that we are including the 4A/5A players. The tickets for the games will be $5 each night or afternoon with the proceeds going to the Evadale Catfish Festival Scholarship Fund which has given out $5500 in only three years to Evadale graduating seniors. Players will be wearing their school uniforms which makes for a colorful game and allows the players one final time in their school colors. The games over the years have been exciting match ups with so many of the players getting one last chance to play against players thaey have spent the last seven years playing against and for some the first and only time to play on the same team with some of those that they have always played against. Just wanted to give all SETX basketball fans the opportunity to put these dates in their calendar now so you could make plans to see the games and support the scholarship fund, oh and while you are at it you can have a great time at the Catfish Festival as the festival and the games are all on the Evadale ISD campus.
2. Evadale Billy Nichols - C (three year starter) Tyler Tucker - 1st B/P (three year starter) - All State last two years Dustin Potts - SS/P (three year starter) Chase Flanklin - 3rd B/P (three year starter) Chris Harvey - RF/3rd B/P (three year starter) Other returning players from last years squad Josh Swift - 1st B/P Tyler Gore - C Devon Murphy - SS/P Tanner Hawthorne - LF Kyle Taylor - C Wes Williams - 2nd B The Rebels have not lost a district baseball game in the last three years They were regional semi-finalists in 2009 They were the state runner up in 2010 They will likely be ranked in the top 5 in the first state poll and have a great chance to win it all this coming season.
3. Now that the holidays are over the Rebels have a couple of pre district game remaining both with larger schools. Looking at the schedule up to this point I am very excited that the Rebels are only a game away from 500. When you look at the schedule and see that only one of the 9 wins came against teams that are 2A, 3A and 4A, while only one of the losses was to a 1A team and that was last years D1 state champion. The Rebels are in a posssition to run the table in basketball in district like they did in football, get in the playoffs and make some noise. When the weak district talk starts which it will, all the Rebels need to remember is that they did not pick their district they just have to play the games in it. They have earned their stripes against the "big boys" the won almost as many as they lost. So the sprint to the finish begins with the prize still at the end. Oh and by the way it will be some time late this month that the Rebels practices will catch up with their games and that should really make a difference in Coach Williams' system. Go get em Rebels!
4. Thanks for all you do Grad! Your post about the past footbal season was right on. How many days is it till two a days start?
5. The Rebels are now 8-6 on the season and have played well against all but HJ in their tournament. They have one more game before taking a break for the holidays but with the schedule they have played even with a loss to Kountze (which is not a given) this team will still be no worse than 8-7 before they open presents. They are gelling well as a team and their defense is improving every game. Rotations are starting to get settled and each time they are on the floor after they have gotten some practice in thy look better. I believe that they have a bright future and will make some noise in this years playoffs.
6. I must say again the quality of teams in the HJ tournament is outstanding. I grew up in Fort Worth and during the holidays the FWISD and the Optimist Club put on a great tournament that I believe still goes on today. Evan back in the mid 70's they were getting teams for LA and NY to come and play as well as having the great Dunbar teams coached Robert Hughes and of course Dallas South Oak Cliff was a regular. So seeing the kinds of teams that are coming to HJ is a real treat for basketball fans. Good luck to all the teams that will be participating!
7. I just looked at the pools for the HJ Marathon Tournament and all I can say is WOW! Whichever team comes out of this one as the winner will have to be considered to do well this season. Evadale has a stout pool with Dayton (4A) Cayuga (last years 1A Division 1 state champions), Hardin-Jefferson (3A) and the Rebels. The team will have to play through a difficult couple of days, but like playing Kountze for the Evadale Tournament championship, you can only get better playing and competiting against good competition. Looking forward to seeing how the Rebel progress in this early part of the season. Good luck Rebels! The other pools are just about as stacked as the Rebels so like I said the it you leave HJ with any hardward then you'll have a great accomplishment on your hands. See you at the gym!
8. First I would like to congratulate the Lions for winning the tournament. You have an outstanding squad and if you continue to shoot and press the way you did last night then you should have a very successful season and make plenty of noise in the post season. You are well coached and there is certainly plenty of talent on the team. To my Rebels I would like to say job well done! It was a week and a day from the regional semi final football game to the championship game in the tournament, you have won 4 out of 5 games and that includes 2 2A teams and a 3A team that you defeated with little trouble. It will be a long time before you will meet up with a team like Kountze in 1A play, but I believe that the best is yet to come. Who knows we might get to face the Lions again this year and the outcome might be different. I told people before the game that it was a win-win situation for the Rebels. A victory over Kountze would have been a major boost, but falling to a team that is in a higher classification with the tradition of a program like Kountze was a great measuring stick to start off the year with. This is the first time that the guys have been in the tournament final in eight years. The tournament only had one 1A team and that was the Rebels. Playing tougher competition in the early part of the season will make things progress faster than it would have playing down. I see great things for the Rebels on the hardwood, just like I saw on the football field. This group of players, all seniors and juniors just does not have any quit in them, so take the lessons of this game and turn them into possitive points that the team can grow from.
9.
If anyone is still intrested in giving it a shot then here is the schedule! 15 games Katy vs Pearland Cy Woods vs Houston Memorial Longview vs Mesquite Horn Montgomery vs Friendswood Cedar Park vs Lake Travis Tyler John Tyler vs Wylie LaMarque vs Manvel Aledo vs Stephenville Chapel Hill vs Columbia Athens vs Coldspring Carthage vs Argyle Navarro vs Wimberley Tatum vs Cameron Yoe West Rusk vs Lexington Big Sandy vs Garrison
10. Don't miss many Rebel games, but had to on this one. This team has some great expectations for this season. A new coach with a ton of senior leadership and overall experience makes this a very good squad and one that should make plenty of noise throughout the season. I am looking forward to seeing them play in the tournament starting tomorrow. Congrats on opening with a win Rebels! Keep practicing and getting your game sharpened to get ready for district play. We have one district championship, so why not make it two for two. Then we can see what noise we can make from there?
11. Great job Lady Rebels! You are looking very good and with as young as you are it means that we can expect great things from you this season as you all mature and grow together as a team. Side note to Kountze fans... Give coach Bridget Kirby a couple of years to mold this team into a winner. She is one of the most intense competitiors I have ever seen and she will have this team whipped into shape before too long. If the team and the fans will support her, she will give you all she has and will put a team on the floor that will make people stand up and take notice.
12. This is an early notification to the coaches and fans that we will have the Catfish Festival All Star games in Evadale this coming May. We also want to announce that we will be expanding the field and the number of games. 4A/5A Games - Girls 6 PM & Guys 7:30 PM - May 12th @ Rebel Gym 2A/3A Games - Girls 6 PM & Guys 7:30 PM - May 13th @ Rebel Gym 1A Games - Girls 2 PM & Guys 3:30 PM - May 14th @ Rebel Gym We will use the same format for player selection. Caoches will be sent a nomination form in early April. They will be able to nominate up to three players from their team. Once all the nominations are in we will contact the #1 nominee from each team and work our way until each team has 10 to 12 players. We will again ask the players to wear their own uniforms, this proved to be a big help last year as players were recognizable to everyone. We would like to encourage coaches to nominate deserving senior players both guys and girls. I would ask coaches to send me contact info via personal messages so I can be sure to get the nomination form to you. We will do most of the work by email. This will be a part of the 7th annual Evadale Catfish Festival which will be a great time for everyone. The proceeds from the tickets will go to the Catfish Festival Scholarship Fund. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them for you. Lets have a great basketball season!
13. After a regional semi final run this year some might expect the Rebels to drop off especially with the loss of 12 seniors, but I would say that it is not the case with what will be returning next year. Rebel Seniors for 2011 Devon Murphy - QB - Started 2 games and won both this year, Brandon Bruce - RB/S - Off/Def Starter, Shawn Totten - WR/OLB - Off/Def Starter, Brandon Midkiff - C/DT - Off Starter, Matthew Conner - T/DT - Off Starter, Kyle Taylor - G/ILB - Off Starter, Tanner Hawthorn - RB/C - Def Starter & Steven Kilpatrick - G/OLB Underclassmen that got plenty of JV playing time and playoff experience Jacob Conner (F) - RB/S, Wes Williams (S) - QB/S, Brandon Harvey (S) - NG, Dustin Sirmons (F) - ILB, Matthew Ackerage (S) - T, Braden Burford (S) - RB/OLB, and there are many more. So if you were worried about the Rebels and their dominance of 1A football coming to an end, well you might want to think again. 2011 looks alot like a reloading year and not a rebuilding one!
14. It was a great season and as the parent of one of those senior guys I can tell you that the Rebels are upset not still being in the playoffs. This will be a year that the community will look back on and say that this year no matter where or o no matter what sport the Rebels are ready to play. That is especially in evidence as the basketball team met for it's first practice at 4 this afternoon, less than 18 hours after the conclusion of the game in College Station. Again thanks to the Rebels for a great ride and now we are looking forward to an even better one in basketball!

SETXsports broadcasting from Kyle Field!! Gotta love it!! Maybe I can get Dave Elmendorf to be my color man! ;D
Brrent Musburger may still be around from the Aggie/Nebraska game.  I've been there many times but never thought my Rebels would run out onto Kyle Field!!!  Unbelievable!!!  Only problem, we're the guest and anyone who knows anything about Aggieland knows the seats on the student side or kinda...well...loose!   LOL, gonna be fun!
Just do like the Ags and don't sit down. If it is as cold as they say it will be you might want to run bleachers every couple of series to warm up. Or you might call Aggie and tell him that you are interested in that play by play thing this wek and sit in the press box!
16. The Evadale Rebels and Falls City Beavers have made arrangements to play their regional semi fianl game at Kyle Field on the campus of Texas A&M University at 7:30 PM on Friday. To all the Rebel fans this will mean that we need everyone who possibly can make the trip to get to College Station for the game. Lets go Rebels and Rebel fans and show Aggieland that Rebel Pride!
17. Now that the playoff monkey is off the Rebel's back I say why not just make a run like last years baseball team did! Many of those same young men are a part of this years football team so they have playoff experince to draw from. I know it is a different sport, but having dealt with the pressure has to be a possitive for this squad. Falls City is a very good team and when you look at Burton and Rocksprings in the other regional semi final you could make a case that the winner of Region 4 has an excellent shot at winning the ewhole thing, but there is still plenty of football to play before any of that can be discussed. This is new to the Rebels to be playing the week of Thanksgiving, but from all I have heard it will be something that everyone in the community will be supporting as I expect a long line of vehicles between Evadale and Bryan. We appreciate all the well wishes from other schools and communities and I too would like to throw my support behind all the remaining SETX teams. I would love to see us bring as many of those championship trophies this way as we possibly can! Go get em Rebels and I will try to post some of my pictures from the D'Hanis game as soon as I get a chance. I had to make a quick trip out to West Texas, but I will be back on the sideline Friday night for the game.
18. Spend three of the four quarters on the sidelines taking pictures. The first half might have been the best couple of quarters the Rebels have played in the last few years! Everything seemed to work. D'Hanis had good size, decent speed and looked to be a foratable opponent before the game started. But the dye was cast in the first two minutes. Josh Swift booted the opening kick off two yards deep in the endzone and the kick return team smashed the return man down at the 10 yard line. Three and out for the defense forcing a punt and great field position on the Cowboy 49 yard line. First play from scrimmage and the Rebels fake a jet sweep that Billy Nichols keeps and takes to the house. five offensive plays - 3 for 5 yards for D'Hanis + a punt and 1 for the Rebels with 10:15 still left in the quarter and the rout was on. The Rebels score 35 first half points and came within a hair of another TD as time ran out in the half. After half time the Rebels closed most of the play book and just ground out the Cowboys. The Rebels drove the field and put up another score on the first possesion of the 2nd half. Then the Cowboys made their only drive scoring with 5:23 left in the third. But the Rebels responded and in just a minute and 12 seconds had scored to push the lead back to 41 points. The Cowboys did score two more TD, but it took them most of 10 minutes to score those on the Rebel JV and second team defensive players. The Rebels will have a difficult game coming up against Falls City, but this team is peeking at teh right time and they now have a playoff victory to feed off of, so who knows what can happen. Things could get interesting in Rebel Land from here on out!
19.

On some ongoing threads there are those who are downing schools, players and coaches for not having the resumes for being a part of the playoffs in this age of expanded teams in the mix due to UIL rules. Well I just wanted to give some props to all the young men and young women that spend hours and hour in practices. Football players endure the heat of summer to get started, while the girls hit the gym for volleyball practices, basketball players are taking over for the most part now and don't mention bleachers to most of them, baseball, softball, track, tennis, golf, power lift and soccer players are soon to get started if they have not already started. We weekend warriors who might play a round of golf every so often (at least that is me) or go bowling or maybe play in a softball league need to remember that for many of these young people they are keeping up with their school work, some are holding down part time jobs, some are doing extra personal practices to better themselves in their sport, so before we start getting down on any student athlete that is just abiding by the rules as they stand right now, lets all remember that these are the "GOOD KIDS", these are the ones that are looking at going to college or vocational schools to further their educations. These are the ones that are joining the military. These are the ones that had a drive to succeed and that we want to be in positions of leadership in our country in the years to come. If you have be negitive on a post think about who and what you are belittleing as you do it. We should be encouraging these kids not downing them. Just my opinion, but I say more power to them and I wish more would get involved, but with attitudes like some of the posts on some of the threads you could see why some might not want to be a part of high school athletics.
Good post but I take exception to one thing you said.  These are not THE "GOOD KIDS".  These are some of the "GOOD KIDS".  A lot of "GOOD KIDS" do not participate in high school athletics.  There are "GOOD KIDS" in Vo Ag, Band, Drama, Debate, etc.  I know it seems I'm nitpicking but too often the non-athletic kids are overlooked and they shouldn't be.
Point well taken VL! I did not mean to imply that those not in athletics were not good kids just like there are some in athletics who are not, my point is that we need to encourage ALL students that are involved outside the classmroom, including all those you mentioned and more. I just want those on this forum which deals more with sports to remember that these are kids that we post about and that they need to be cut some slack on occasion, because they do go above and beyond what is required to get their diploma and graduate. I do personally want to congratulate all those that you mentioned as they to are outstanding young people that need our support as well.
