The defense is what I need to know about. This game should provide that information. A low scoring close game with either outcome would be a good indicator.

I had the same concern at the first of the year. After the Kirbyville game, I'm ok with the defense. What Ole Moe said worries me. Last night Jon Meek (I think he was doing the play by play) said Nate Williams was doing exceptionally well at throwing on the run, but if nobody can catch it you are a one demensional team. I was sure hoping they would find some pass catchers this year. We will see.

Canadian did a great job against that play. Though, a great team like Canadian knew that Newton had a horrible passing game if #8 was not on the field. Therefore, they were able to focus on the run. It's hard to win championships without having a solid passing game to mix in with the run. That is what I think Newton may have difficult with this year. Excited to see what is to come.

You are right on all points. I hope they find a kid who can catch. I'm dying to find out if T Browns younger brother will make the varsity this year.

By the way I saw T Browns name on TJC's roster, but failed to find Noah Williams or Caiden Walker. Does anybody out there know where those two are? Noah was on last year but not this year. I read where Caiden was going to go there.

    Inquiring minds want to know!!

Actually, the links are available right now.  They are posted in our 2019 SETXsports.com MASTER BROADCAST SCHEDULE which is in our SETXsports.com Broadcasts Forum just above the Football forum.  Here is that link:

They are also in the "SETXsports.com Broadcast Guide with Broadcast Links/Week 1and there will be one posted like it every week in the SETXsports Broadcasts Forum.  Here is the link to that:

Also, in the SETXsports.com Broadcast Forum there will are individual broadcast links for each game on SETXsports.  Here is the one for Newton:

Plus, when I post the game threads on Friday in the football forum, I will post the link in that game thread.

This year, if you can't find the link for a game that we have here, shame on ya!

I hear dat. Thanks I found it.

Newton is actually pretty loaded this year. They have darn good players everywhere. They just don't have the "big 3" like the past two seasons. Now, the boys that were overshadowed from the the "big 3" will finally have their chance and it will show. They have some good ones. I just hope Newton shares the ball with all the athletes and keep Coach Neece's mentality.

I hope they are more flexible, and reactive. Canadian killed us with their strong safety on the Jett sweep in the state game.  Neece didn't have an answer for it. A soft pass behind the safety would have neutralized that play. We'll see.

Kirbyville is improved this year. They will compete against Newton. Kountze is solid and has size and athletes all over the field. Kirbyville ran it down their throat. I think Newton wins by 13

That's kinda good news since district 12 has been weak for several years now. It'll be good to see some compition. 🤼‍♂️

  8. Regarding the Gatson kid, that is tremendous news for us eagle fans.  Also I hear  T. Brown has a younger brother who is as good or better than his older brother.

Maybe  some of you local guys can fill us in. We like eagle news from the Piney Woods. Go Eagles, man I can't wait.  🏈

Yes, it was the Gatson Kid. Newton has another man that may play QB (Seastrunk) and he can run and throw. He is a very accurate passer and can run the offense. We also have a big running back moving up.

Aw man, I sure was looking forward to watching that young-un play this year. It is ironic that you mention Seastrunk though, my son and I was wondering if they had anyone who could compete for quarterback.

Thanks for the info, keep it coming.

We don’t move up freshman very often. Newton has a very good defense returning . Slyvester 6’5 230 is the top recruited player in Setx. ,Watson,Gulley & DT 6’2 260 Clark all have FCS offers. Offense returns two big lineman Burnaman led the team in pancakes last season and Amburn 6’5 290. DB/WR Seastruck (Caught game winning pick is returning , him and RB Fowler return both have FCS offers. Nate Williams takes over at QB, he has good speed and has a great arm , brother of Noah willians 2017 state game mvp on offense . Nate is a Baseball star and has great accuracy throwing the football, got a lot of work during regular Season, Also plays DB. Newton did lose the star freshman RB that showed promise during playoffs( moved to Galveston) but Dillion Brown is a Freshman , brother of Tamauzia.

Anybody know if that was  the Gatson kid, if so I'm disappointed to hear that.

IMO EB was the ultimate sleeper team this year. Nobody saw them coming. When a poll says  95% favored Newton to win that is telling.  EB coaches had an excellent game plan, and their kids played it to perfection. Most of the homers were saying how smart and hardworking they were, and that proved to be right. It would not surprise me that the coaching staff had been working on a game plan for Newton all year it was pretty obvious Newton was the team to beat. Knowledgeable people have said what really hurt Newton was the EB linemen were not taking the bait on pulling guards and tackles. They. Held their positions, made the play thus hampering Newtons running game. (An over simplification)

By the second half Newton coaches figured it out and began to make adjustments. I've said before, EB had the strangest offensive scheme I have ever seen, and keep in mind it was all new to Newton. The perfect storm you might say.

After all is said and done, Newtons offense came through in the end. Those kids made a final game winning drive that proves what a Silsbee player said of this team in their game. "We held them for 2 quarters, but they just kept coming at us". But I will tell you, I am worried that this team has been hurt in the area where Canadian is the strongest, without Brown.

However I have said all along, the championship is theirs to win , it all depends on how bad they want it. It is up to them.

I was about to ask if they made two laps around the square like they do for the Christmas Parade.  They did.

Am I the only wondering why the covered wagon and city backhoe weren't part of that procession?

Yeah... that was the excuse for coming up short a few years ago.  "Long ride on the yellow dogs on the day of the game."

    Good Luck, Eagles....

Last year I believe they drove to  Enniis, spent the night, then drove on in to Arlington. If so, they will probably do the same this year, So that won't be quite so bad. Besides that it didn't hurt any then.

I don't know what's going on with him

Dam, you would think that someone in his community would step up and try to be a big brother, or father figure to this kid. He has too much talent and too much to lose for his problems to be ignored. It is such a waste, not specifically for football, but for a productive life. I can assure you, with this kids talent, the world was his oyster.

If Newton doesn't have a better offensive strategy than what was displayed against EB then they might be unpleasantly surprised this week.  "Get the ball to the athlete" and out athlete everybody may have worked for pretty much all season but I don't know if that's enough anymore.

I hope this works, it's the first time to try. Below is an excellent breakdown of last nights game. Bottom line EB had a lot to do with Newtons jerky jerky play.

I’m not laughing. Newton is a phenomenal team with incredible athletes; they survived and advanced but I’m hoping they come up with something resembling an offense before they face Canadian. I definitely agree that EB was very well prepared, and I certainly know that Newton is by far and away the best team in 3A D2, but that hully gully offense they put on display tonight almost cost them. Canadian will be their toughest test by far IMO. Another night of hully gully offense against the Wildcats could very well result in the Eagles being in another dog fight

What's wrong with Barlow. He ain't runnng like his Normal self. Is it his shoulder? He hasn't run well in two weeks imo.

    Peace out everybody.

Good analysis J.J. It's interesting you mention. #33 because he replaces Corbin Foster and I was kinda worried if he could maintain the same quality of play. Couple of things that stood out to me. One , Darwin doesn't seem to be running tough like he normally does. I've seen him knock the helmet off tacklers before. Maybe that's just me in my observation. I'm not a football expert by any means.

I will say one other thing though. That was the strangest offensive scheme I have ever seen. I saw some of the best blocking schemes I have ever seen, by EB. They walled off Newton defenders very effectively on those off tackle, and end around plays. Anyway thanks for the analysis, and we saw some great football last night.

EB took away Barlow's legs. They used a very smart angle swoop and wrap. The OLBs continued to play the best perimeter ball I've seen in a while....Overall it was good coaching on both sides. That long TD run Barlow got in the 3rd took Newton the entire 2nd qtr and part of the 3rd to set it up "Excellent Coaching on Newton's Part". Newton kept trying to get the DT to follow the Guard outside but EB stayed very disciplined. Go back and look at the play before the TD and you'll see where the EB's strong 3 tech finally followed the Guard and went after barlow. The very next play they ran the counter with G and T pulling on the 38 which left a lane. Go to the next drive Newton had the ball and EB didn't follow anymore lolol.

I'll tell you exactly what was up with Barlow tonight. EB had outstanding OLB play and 2 shut down corners. They had 4 guys shut down everything to the outside by staying home in the 9 tech and getting off blocks. 7 and 2 played man to the outside and was better than Newton's receivers so it left 7 men to defend the box and force newton to setup plays. Once the Newton DC figured out that the DT's would not follow the pulling Guard and tackle outside that's when Newton was able to start moving the ball and get a drive going. But that said 12 for EB might have been the best MLB Newton faced all year. Defensively Newton was solid the entire game...mental mistakes cost them that last TD. 33 seems to lose composure really easily and once he does looks like a couple others feed off of it and follow right behind him. Once again Newton's true best player and savoir was and is Sylvester. He will be a beast at DT in college. The more I watch him the more he reminds me of ex Arp player and Baylor's starting DT Tyrone Hunt whom is expected to picked in the late 2nd to 3rd round in this years draft. similar builds at that age.
