  1. I wish coach Haynes all the best for the mighty Hornets. I played shortstop on the same little League team Larry played on that his Dad coached. He was a pretty good catcher for a little leaguer.
  2. Is this the same Larry Haynes that once was a quarterback at Hardin and Liberty? i thought he was at one of the big Aldine schools.
  3. What this article doesn't tell you is that the UIL does not back or help officials in any way with any pay problems. The only recourse an official has if he feels he has been paid unfairly by a school is to scratch that school from his schedule. I would love to see a more structured way of all officials being paid. Why should one school pay officials like they are suppose to and another decide they will pay what they want. Most schools in this area will pay baseball officials by the gate. There are a few that will only pay you the minimum everytime. Some schools look at baseball as just a secondary sport that cost them money so they do not pay anymore than they have to. Most of the time the security that is at the game gets paid more than the two umpires on the field and very rarely does he have to do anything. But the UIL says that security must be provided and if the schools didn't pay what security ask for then they would not have any and make them in violation of UIL code. I personally do not umpire games for the money but, the UIL needs to step up and make this a cut and dry issue and not leave it to the schools to determine what they want to pay.
  4. What is this world comming to. Dogs and cats living together and Coop asking where an Ump was from !!!!!! LOL Wasn't from Beaumont area if that tells you anything and it was a split crew hmmmmmmmmm
  5. I take the loop around Lufkin and get of on the hwy103 exit . Go left under freeway and then turn left on Raguet which is only a short distance after you get off the loop then turn right on airport ave. which takes you right to the field. Use google maps and zoom in a little and look at where 103 intersects the loop..
  6. Hooks was also the home of the late Durwood Merrill #33 American League Umpire.
  7. The rule about only one game during school days a week is not enforced during the playoffs.
  8. I look at catchers a little different . Do they know how to frame a pitch. Where to set up correctly. Little things that actually help their pitchers. I have 5 that I really liked this past year. Rowell - LCM Carnahan - PNG Jackson - BC Williams - Vidor and the one I think did the best job. Alex Mosier - Nederland
  9. Just talked to Coach Davis from Colmesneil. As of now, scheduled for double header Friday starting at 4pm Morris Frank in Lufkin. If needed 4pm Saturday for third game
  10. Colmesneil rained out tonight. Will hear later tonight about what will be going on.
  11. I say lets wait and vote when all the playoff games are in. Any coach in this area that gets to go to Austin gets my vote. Also IMO there are coaches out there that maybe their team didn't make the playoffs but still did a great job coaching their teams. High School Coaching is about alot more than wins and loses.
  12. Last time I checked this is Southeast Texas so whatever the weather is now .... wait 15 minutes and it will changed. Last night in Jasper it looked like there was no doubt that we were going to get pounded by some very nasty weather. Only had a few sprinkles during the game.
  13. Colmesneil and Groveton all games at Lufkin Morris Frank Field Thur 6pm Fri 6 pm Sat if needed 4pm
  14. It was a very moving thing for me to watch. We will wear the black armbands for the remainder of the regular season this year
  15. It would be nice to know the correct time since I know the Umps are comming for a 2:00 game
  16. I show that the LCM/Ned game is at 2:00 on my schedule
  17. I looked up the defintion of common sense in the dictionary and nowhere did I find the name UIL in it. Just a little kidding I know that they really do try to do the best with the alignments. There is no way that every school is going to like whatever the UIL comes up with. It's the nature of the beast. If they can come up with a plan that is the best for the majority of the schools then that will have to do. What's good in SE Texas may not be as good in West Texas.
  18. As an old shortstop my coach's favorite saying to the infielders was... Field with your chest and you field 1000%. Meaning keep the ball in front and sacrifice your body to get it done
  19. You win 7-2 and you make a statement like that ??? Show a little class.
  20. If you run over a catcher or any other fielder when you could avoid them you are going to be out and ejected. If the catcher or any other fielder is blocking the base and not making a play on the ball, then the runner will not be penalized for avoiding contact and the fielder will be guilty of obstruction. There are times when there is unavoidable contact and no call is made as long as either party does not do anything to make the collision more violent than it needs to. If you can avoid contact then I strongly suggest that you do and do not leave it in the judgement of the official. I personally wish federation ball, which rules are used for Texas high school baseball, would do what is done at the college level. In college you must slide if a play is being made on you with special intrest at 2nd and home.
  21. Good thing someone used the wide angle lens for the picture of the PNG LCM game. Would have hated to have my butt block out the whole picture
  22. I think there should have been more pictures of the home plate umpire
  23. Here are my favorites Glen Gaspard - East Chambers late 60's Les Koenning Jr. - Hamshire Fannett 76 Donald Douglas - Qb Liberty 80's Chip Ambres - West Brook 90's Chris McGee - Lineman Ozen Deon Beasley - West Orange
  24. Little League and High School are different in many ways. True Little League is all volunteer no matter what the level. We do put all of our new umpires through a first year training class that runs for most of the high school season. In high school we also must pass a fifty question test each year along with extra training that we get at our state convention each year. Right now in the Beaumont Chapter we have 90 umpires to cover 43 schools. With how people work and the number that can only call a limited amount of games it is amazing how we cover all of the games. We do lose officials every year because they say they do not want to put up with all the yelling at them at games. No matter what the sport it takes a person with a certain personality and focus to officiate any sport. I have been a player, a coach, and a fan of baseball for many years, 42 years of at least one of the mentioned. Now as a high school umpire the past 14 years, I see the game from even a different perspective as I did as a player, coach, or player. The only constant in all of these is... IT IS JUST A GAME. The losers don't go before a firing squad.
