MC All-Stars near World Series Special to the Leader The Orange Leader First baseman Chad Sims slugged two home runs and knocked in five runs in all Sunday as the Mid-County Senior Babe Ruth All-Stars advanced to the finals of the Southwest Regional tournament. The tournament champion qualifies for the 16-year-old Babe Ruth Baseball World Series at Bentonville, Ark., Aug. 11-18. Mid-County was a 10-5 winner Sunday over Tri-County, Texas, a regional team like Mid-County based halfway between Houston and San Antonio. The only teams now left in the tournament besides Mid-County are teams the Southeast Texans have already beaten the past three days. The host Vicksburg team played Lonoke, Ark., in an elimination game late Sunday. The winner of that game plays Tri-County at 3 p.m. today for a spot against Mid-County in the 6 p.m. championship game tonight. Because it’s a double-elimination tournament, if Mid-County were to lose tonight, a second championship game would be needed Tuesday morning. “Our team is getting better every game,†Mid-County manager Jimmy Collins said. “Now we have to sit back until all the teams beat up on each other to get back to us.†Mid-County has outscored its three opponents here 26-10. Sims, a sophomore from Vidor, went 4 for 4, adding a single and a double to his two dingers. Taylor Eaves, the third baseman from Hamshire-Fannett, added two doubles to what was an 11-hit Mid-County attack. Bridge City’s Blake Snyder was the winning pitcher and Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Taylor Thompson relieved him in the fifth inning and finished the game. “Our pitching’s been very good and our defense has been real solid,†Collins said.

kogt Southeast Texas Demons QB Rashid Dennis (WOS) tries going over a defender Saturday during their minor league game against the Lake Charles RiverKats at the WOS Middle School. The Demons put up a good fight in the first half against the defending South American Football League champs but the RiverKats poured it on in the second half for a 58-21 win. kogt The Mid-County 16 All-Stars won their second game at Regionals thanks to the hitting of LCM's Matt Johnson. Johnson went 3-4 with a HR in an 11-3 win over Western Arkansas Saturday in Vicksburg, Miss.
