[Hidden Content] Steve Francis to return to Rockets Three-time All-Star picks former team over Heat, Mavs and Clippers By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle Former Rockets guard Steve Francis is about to be future Rockets guard Steve Francis. Francis chose the Rockets over the Heat, Mavericks and Clippers, his agent Jeff Fried said on Thursday. "I just hung up with Daryl (Morey, the Rockets general manager)," Fried said. "He is dealing with facilitating the contract. "It's a combination of a variety of factors including the fit with the team, a comfortableness with the organization and a familiarity with the surroundings. He has a home in Houston. In so many ways, it has remained his home, despite some interim stops, Orlando and New York. "For Steve, it's coming home." -

Durant signs 7-year, $60 million endorsement deal with Nike BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Kevin Durant signed a seven-year, $60 million endorsement deal with Nike that includes a $10 million signing bonus, the second-largest rookie deal in basketball. Nike and Durant's agent's office confirmed Wednesday the deal had been reached. "We are very pleased to have Kevin as a part of the Nike Basketball family," said Craig Zanon, vice president and general manager of global basketball. "Kevin is an amazing talent on the court and a quality person off the court and we are happy to be partnering with him as he starts his NBA career." The Seattle Times, citing industry sources, reported on Wednesday that Durant had earlier turned down a $70 million deal with adidas. That contract called for a $12 million signing bonus, but Durant has a history dating to eighth grade with Nike. "At the end of the day, Kevin has been with Nike his whole career and he felt comfortable with them," Durant's agent Aaron Goodwin said, according to the paper. "He took the time to give adidas the opportunity and they're a great company, but he chose the company that he's more familiar with. And we build brands on authenticity and it's more authentic for him to be somewhere where he wants to be and he's comfortable." The paper said that Nike will unveil a signature Durant shoe after his rookie season with the Sonics. Durant has reportedly expressed an interest in endorsing a midrange priced shoe.

From Tiger90 was called earlier and spoke with some family and friends. Donovan is currently scheduled for more CAT scans in Galveston and doctors are optimistic. Xavier is scheduled to have surgery shortly for a fractured leg. Unfortunately, I have also just received word that another student, a passenger in the other vehicle, is in really bad shape in ICU. -

New Bulldog Stadium scoreboard promises all the bells, whistles Dave Rogers The Port Arthur News Look for the Nederland Bulldogs to land a knockout punch in Southeast Texas’ Scoreboard Wars this fall. The Daktronics scoreboard set to debut at Nederland High home football games this fall will feature a full-color 14-foot by 19-foot video screen capable of instant replays from any one of three stadium cameras, unlimited graphics, and advertising. Plenty of advertising. The 42-foot long scoreboard itself will be surrounded by panels carrying the logos of four “anchor†sponsors and five “founding†sponsors. Additional sponsor signage will be mounted around Bulldog Stadium. The best-case scenario is for South Dakota-based Daktronics and Nederland Independent School District to split some sizable profits from the venture. The worst-case scenario, says Daktronics’ Drew Mitchell, is that Daktronics could lose money on the deal. He says NISD cannot lose. “Daktronics is financing it, along with the bank, so it’s not costing the school district any money at all,†he said. “We’re the ones who take the risk. If we’re unable to sell the advertising, it doesn’t cost the school district.†Mitchell is the fellow charged with making those sales and he said he’s off to a good start. Five Points Credit Union, Neches Federal Credit Union and JK Chevrolet have already signed on as three of the four anchor sponsors, agreeing to pay $20,000 a year for 10 years, Mitchell says. Christus Hospitals and Doornbos FLC have grabbed up two of the five founding sponsorships, packages that require a $12,500 commitment for 10 years. Their combined first-year commitment of $85,000 put the project past the so-called “booking point†and construction has begun on the scoreboard in Daktronics’ Brookings, S.D. plant. “The materials should be manufactured and be here by the middle of next month,†Nederland athletic director Larry Neumann said, “and then it just takes a few days to install everything. “We don’t play at home until our third ballgame (Sept. 14 against Waller), so we have a little more of a window.â€
