Freshman impact: Which of the young Aggies are primed to step up? Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione recently singled out a few true freshmen who've caught his eye so far in fall camp. The standouts include strong safety Billy Chavis, receiver Roger Holland (Cy Falls), defensive end Von Miller and linebacker Derrick Stephens (Cy Falls). So which of them are most ready for action this fall? "It's too early to identify who will play and how much yet," Franchione said. "But those are the guys that did some things the first week that everybody took notice of." By most accounts, < a href="[Hidden Content] has been the talk of the camp. The 6-foot-5, 231-pound standout from Beaumont's West Brook High School has delievered several jaw-dropping hits that have earned him respect among his older teammates. He's been so impressive at strong safety that he is running plays with the first- and second-team defenses. "He loves to play," Franchione said. "He's been a pretty quick learner, and he's been in the right place at the right time, and he's played pretty physical in the short amount of time. "Probably one of our best hits we've had in our Aggie Drill was by Billy Chavis. He destroyed the blocker, hit the back and caused a fumble. That's a pretty exceptional play in that drill for a freshman to make. Everybody stood up and took notice of that." Physically at this point, Chavis looks as though he could be a junior on the Aggies' roster. But the interesting thing is if as his body matures he might find himself closer and closer to the defensive line of scrimmage. That shouldn't be a big deal for a guy who played six different positions during his three years as a starter at West Brook. "Billy has so many positive things physically working for him, height, decent speed and good feet," Franchione said. "I don't know exactly what position he will play. We're looking at him at strong safety right now; we had him playing weak safety early in camp. We feel like he might be a good blitzer off the edge or maybe playing him a little closer to the ball will be better for him. "But Coach Clay has liked him at just about every position and I know Coach Darnell has his eye on him every now and then, too."

Who's No. 1? Today, it's Southlake (Texas) Carroll. After Sept. 15, it could be Northwestern (Miami). These two teams, who are at the top of USA TODAY's Super 25 preseason football rankings, meet Sept. 15 in Dallas at Southern Methodist University's Ford Stadium (ESPNU, 7 p.m. ET). The game could be the third time in Super 25's 25-year history that No. 1 has met No. 2 and the first time a team would travel out of state to make it happen. More than a No. 1 ranking might be at stake for the Dragons, who finished last season as the Super 25's top team. They're also riding a 48-game winning streak. "Expectations (at Carroll) never change," says first-year coach Hal Wasson, who was hired in January after Todd Dodge left for North Texas University. Wasson, an assistant to Dodge in 2001 and 2002, bought into the same spread offense and defensive philosophies. He returned to Carroll after a four-year stint at nearby Fossil Ridge, where his teams went 28-15, including a district title in 2006. "The names and faces may have changed (since 2002), but the structure has stayed the same," Wasson says. Carroll, 79-1 since 2002 with four Class 5A state championships, has finished No. 1 in the rankings twice in the last three seasons. Quarterback Riley Dodge, Todd's son, leads the way. He was Texas' 5A player of the year in 2006 after throwing for 4,237 yards and 54 touchdowns. "He's the consummate field general," Wasson says. "Riley is trustworthy, accountable, a playmaker and makes the guys around him better." Riley originally made a verbal commitment to play for the Texas Longhorns (his father's alma mater) but recently switched to North Texas. Running back Tre Newton, a first-team 5A selection in 2006 and son of former Pro Bowl NFL lineman Nate Newton, isn't wavering on his Texas commitment. As a junior, he rushed for 1,285 yards and 14 TDs. Wide receiver Blake Cantu (14 TDs) is Riley's primary target. If Carroll is built on a structured offense, Miami Northwestern, Florida's Class 6A champion, stresses speed and athleticism. Four Northwestern players have committed to Miami (Fla.), including 6-4 quarterback Jacory Harris, who passed for almost 3,000 yards and 37 TDs last season. Receivers Aldarius Johnson (6-3, 200 pounds) and Tommy Streeter (6-4, 195) combined for 33 TD receptions. Tackle Marcus Forston (20 sacks) spearheads a 4-3 defense. "All of them will play at the next level, and it won't surprise me when some play on Sundays (NFL)," says Northwestern coach Billy Rolle, who is in his first season after taking over for Roland Smith. Smith was fired in July for covering up a sex scandal that involved a star running back and a 14-year-old girl on Northwestern's grounds in December. Rolle, who previously coached Northwestern, is the only coach in Miami-Dade County to guide two schools to state football titles. Northwestern finished fifth in last year's rankings.

True but shouldn't be a close game i wouldn't think. -
Central sweeps Hardin-Jeff The Central middle blocker stood patiently while her teammates continued to set and bump the ball during the final volley of Game 3 against Hardin-Jefferson -until Thomas finally got her shot. She didn't have to leap in the air. But she did pull her hand back as far as she could before she spiked the ball across court for the final point of the game. Thomas' game-winning kill capped off a 3-0 victory Tuesday night. Central (2-0) beat the Hawks 25-12, 25-14, 25-19 at the Jaguars' gym. "I thought we played well tonight," said Central coach Angel Marsh. "We took them seriously the first game, but I think we kind of slacked off the final two. But I thought overall we did a good job." Thomas put an end to a 3-0 scoring run by Hardin-Jefferson in Game 3. Central led the way 24-16 before the Hawks scored the next three points. Hardin-Jefferson (2-4) was able to come within reach when the Jaguars continued to hit balls out of bounds. Before then Central, which led by as many as 10 points in the game, jumped out to an 18-9 lead. The Jaguars looked to end the game quickly until out-of-bounds hits caught up with the team. "I think we became restless in the game," Marsh said. "But we made the adjustments to finish them off." Central's Katrina Harris led the Jaguars with 10 kills. Clarissa Williams added eight kills. Harris and Williams, along with Thomas and Brandi Buckley, are the returning starters from last year's team. "Ursula and Brandi are my leaders on the team," Marsh said. "I have a strong group of starters and I look for them to lead us to a winning season this year." Hardin-Jefferson's Taylor McGill led the Hawks with eight kills. Keelee Lang had 15 assists and Caitlyn Kerl had four blocks. "We are off to a good start," Marsh said. "We played well against Kelly in our first game, and we executed well against Hardin-Jefferson. Our goal is to continue to improve with each game to prepare for the district season."

Lady Bears survive Lady Dogs in 5 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — The Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs played a pretty smart match Tuesday night at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School. The more chances the Lady Bears gave, the more the Lady Bulldogs accepted. It took five games for the Lady Bears to get past the Lady Bulldogs and an easy way to see gifts LC-M gave Kelly is quite simple. LC-M had a player finish with more kills than the entire Kelly squad, meaning it was not the Lady Bulldogs attack putting pressure on the Lady Bears. LC-M (5-4) finished off Kelly 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 24-26 and 15-3. Lady Bears’ sophomore Christine Sicktich led a powerful LC-M attack with 19 kills, 10 assists and six aces. Senior Morgan Blohm and Kinsey Staudt had terrific matches as well as Blohm finished with 11 kills and Staudt added 10. Adding to the offense was the beautiful sets from both Kristi Trahan and Alexa Humble. Trahan had 15 assists to go with seven kills while Humble added 13 helpers. Kelly’s scrappy play had its fans all fired up heading into the fifth game but LC-M came out and eliminated the hitting and serving errors. “In the first and last game we did not have as many errors,†LC-M Coach Vicki Castino said. “You cannot win games when you give the other team points.†That proved to be true in the final game as the serve from Shayna Sheppard and Sicktich were all the Lady Bears needed. The two combined for 11 service points in the final frame with Sheppard hitting for four straight and Sicktich hitting for the game’s final seven. LC-M’s Jordyn Davis, who put in seven kills, finished the match off with a kill of her own. The Lady Bears got off to a quick start in the first game after the score being tied at two. Sheppard broke off six straight service points to give LC-M the 8-2 lead. Kelly found itself down 21-11 before Layne Ford hit for four straight points. Sheppard then ended the game with two straight service points giving the Lady Bears the 25-15 win. LC-M appeared to take control of the second game behind the serve of Carly Gauthier, who finished with five aces. Gauthier served up six straight points, including three aces, to give LC-M a 16-10 lead. With LC-M serving and nursing a 21-19 lead, a LC-M shot found the net and started a downward spiral. Eventually three more hitting errors led to Kelly’s 25-23 win. The Lady Bulldogs in the third were the ones making the errors late in the game with Sicktich serving and LC-M up 21-17. Sicktich struck for an ace before the next three Kelly shots found the net giving the Lady Bears a 25-17 victory in Game 3. The Lady Bears were one point from winning with a 24-22. A LC-M shot then found the net before Kelly’s Maggie McCauley, who had six kills, slammed home a winner. LC-M then had two more errors letting Kelly slide away with a 26-24 win. The Lady Bears return to action Friday in pool play of the Northwest Tournament in Dallas. Other teams in LC-M’s pool include Lake Travis, Highland Park and Mid-Lothian. Bracket play for the tournament will be on Saturday.
