  7. LC-M's Castino reaches 300 career wins Tommy Mann, Jr. The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — When Craig Biggio cranked out his 3,000th hit in a Houston Astros’ uniform, he had an amazing night, going 5-for-6 at the plate. Well, long-time Little Cypress-Mauriceville head volleyball coach Vicki Castino reached a milestone thanks to the efforts of her Lady Bears Saturday. Castino was on win No. 297 when the Lady Bears got on a bus Saturday morning to play in the Barbers Hill Tournament. The Lady Bears garnered wins No. 298 and 299 in Mont Belvieu by defeating both Silsbee and Clear Spring. They hopped on the yellow wagon back to Orange County and went to West Orange-Stark where they defeated a young Lady Mustang unit 25-12, 25-10, 25-4 to give Castino her 300th career victory with LC-M HS. Not a bad day, going 3-for-3. “It’s not about me, it’s about all the wonderful kids that have came through LC-M over the years,†said Castino, who was presented a 300-victory plaque after the contest. “The kids, they just a tremendous day all the way around. I really like the team unity of this team this year. They’re working hard and they just want to get better and better.†The Lady Bear program is a far cry from where it was at when Castino took over the reigns in the late 1980s. “I remember being so excited my first year here,†Said Castino. “We went and won the Kirbyville Tournament and that was the highlight because we ended up losing every district game but one. Our program has really came a long way and all the credit needs to go to the kids. I’ve had some fun times at LC-M and I plan to have plenty more.†The Lady Bears (4-2) broke away from a 7-7 tie in Game One by outscoring the Lady Mustangs (0-3) 18-5 the rest of the way. Brittany Wiegand scored seven straight service points during the run while Christine Sicktich and Morgan Blohm controlled the net. A kill by Jennipher Orebo got the Lady Mustangs to within 7-5 in Game Two but the Lady Bears pulled away fast as Blohm was able to serve up 12 straight points for the Lady Bears as they easily pulled away. WO-S grabbed a 1-0 lead in Game Three but the Lady Bears exploded with a 25-3 spurt to wrap up the match. Sicktich finished by serving up the last 13 points of Game Three. Sicktich finished with 17 service points, eight aces and eight kills. Blohm collected 11 service points and six kills. Carly Gauthier served up eight points and two aces and added three kills . Kristi Trahan and Jordyn Davis added three kills apiece for the Lady Bears. Alexa Humble served well, finishing with six points and three aces. Orebo led the Lady Mustangs with three kills. Shakesha King had three points and two aces for the Lady Mustangs while Kia Hartfield and Miquendria Warnell added two points apiece. The Lady Bears downed defending District 21-3A champion Silsbee 25-11, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20 in the first match of the day at Barbers Hill and then came right back to sweep Clear Spring 25-18, 25-11, 25-13. In the matches Sicktich totaled 29 kills and five aces. Trahan had 16 kills and Davis had 10. Blohm had six kills, three blocks and two aces. Wiegand poured out nine aces. Gauthier had four kills and three aces while Kaci Olson had five kills and two aces. Wiegand and Shayna Sheppard were also credited for excellent defense. The Lady Bears will venture back to the Barbers Hill Tournament today and will play Dickinson and Crosby. The Lady Mustangs return to action Tuesday when they go to Beaumont Ozen for a dual match with Ozen and Forest Brook.
  8. BC's James injures knee Orange Leader Sports The Orange Leader The Bridge City Cardinals suffered a major setback Friday night both on and off the court. Nederland swept Bridge City in three games but the big news was an injury to a key senior starter for the Lady Cardinals. Brittany James injured her knee in the match and had to be helped off the court. James, a four-year player for Bridge City, will have the knee examined over the weekend to determine the extint of the injury. Nederland won the match 23-25, 25-12, 25-12 and 25-17. The Lady Cardinals will play at the LaPorte Tournament Thursday and Saturday of next week.
  9. Basketball recruit Harris commits to A&M Dashan Harris, a four-star basketball recruit as rated by Rivals.com, put Texas A&M at the head of a long line of unofficial campus visits this summer. Apparently, his final visit Tuesday left the right impression because the 6-1 junior point guard from Montverde Academy in Orlando, Fla., committed to first-year A&M coach Mark Turgeon on Friday. This one was interesting because among the schools Harris turned down was Kentucky, where former A&M coach Billy Gillispie went in April. "When I was there on campus, I just felt like that was the right place for me," Harris said. "I had a great connection with coach Turgeon; he's a great coach and a great person. "It just felt like the right thing for me." Harris averaged 12.6 points and 10.1 assists as a junior. He chose the Aggies over Indiana, Kentucky, California, Florida State, Cincinnati and Oklahoma.

  12. OF sweeps past Buna Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Orangefield seniors Allie Beach and Laura Riddick got on a roll Friday night and there was almost nothing Buna could do but sit back and watch. Beach hit for 10 straight service points in the second game while Riddick connected for 12 straight in the third game as the Lady Bobcats swept the Lady Cougars in three games. Orangefield improved to 4-2 on the season with a 25-20, 25-12 and 25-4 in the Lady Bobcats’ home debut. Riddick lead the way for Orangefield with six kills while chiming in three assists and eight aces. KK Little was the main set-up girl for Orangefield with a match-high 13 assists to go with two kills and one ace. “The girls played well tonight,†Orangefield Coach Linda Riddick said. “There is still plenty we need to work on. Our serving was so much better tonight than it was on Thursday in the Vidor Tournament. I was pleased to see that start to come around.†The serving game was on point against the Lady Cougars as Orangefield hit for 19 aces in the match as Beach hit for five overall to go with her three kills. After a see-saw battle in the first game the Lady Cougars were hanging in with Orangefield up 10-8. That is when Beach decided enough was enough. Beach went on her 10 point tear which included all five of her aces. Aimee Scales had two of her four kills during the run. Buna could never recover and Olivia Wagner, who had five kills, finished the game off with a kill giving Orangefield the 25-12. The third and final game was never even close. Orangefield jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead behind the nice serve of Scales. It included two aces. Jessica Maass then hit for four straight service points to give Orangefield a 11-2 lead. After a Buna serve went out of bounds and Orangefield up 12-3, Riddick went on her roll. Riddick hit her 12 points, including five aces, and Buna’s shots kept finding the net or out of bounds shot after shot. A Lady Bobcat shot hit the net making it 24-4 and on the next serve a Buna serve went out to give Orangefield the 25-4 win. “The girls are having so much fun,†Linda Riddick said. “You never see different groups because they are always together. We knew chemistry would be an important part.†The Lady Bobcats will jump back into the Vidor Tournament at 9:30 a.m. with a match against Diboll.
