Lady Cards James out at least a month Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader The Bridge City Lady Cardinals athletics program is breathing a sigh of relief now that senior Brittany James got a bit of good news following a potentially devastating injury Friday night in Nederland. James was examined Monday for the knee injury and it was found that her ACL was not completely torn and it is listed as an isolated tear. She will get a second opinion today. The injury, which occurred Friday against the Nederland Lady Bulldogs in a volleyball match, does require surgery and should only have about a month recovery time. BC volleyball coach Becca Matthews said James will likely have the surgery this week. Knowing James, a four-year player for the Lady Cardinals, a month will not pass before she is back on the court. She is as tough as they come and will likely work harder than ever to get back into shape. James also shines on the basketball court for Bridge City and can be seen wrecking havoc in track and field. She was being looked at by a Hawaiian university for cheerleading. Get well soon Brittany and The Orange Leader looks forward to seeing you out again.

LC-M’s Johnson named to Babe Ruth WS All-Tourney Team Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Matt Johnson received a great honor this past weekend as he was named to the 2007 16 Year Old Babe Ruth World Series Team. Johnson, an outfielder, and the Nederland team fell 22-11 in the final game on Saturday to the champions from Mobile, Ala. Mobile racked up 23 hits in the game and Johnson had a double in the contest as one of Mid-County’s 12 hits. “They could hit the ball,†Johnson said on Monday. “It was a good game.†Johnson called the selection to the team an honor and said he went into the tournament with high goals for himself. “That was one of my goalsk,†Johnson added. “I told one of my teammates I wanted us to win the thing and I was going to be named MVP. I tried hard to help us as best I could. It is a great honor. It felt great representing Texas and LC-M.†Mid-County started the tournament off with a 9-6 win over Puyallup, Wash. and then defeated Williamsport 9-8. Johnson had a double in the second win. Johnson then had two doubles in Mid-County’s exciting 5-4 win over Union County, Ark. in 10 innings. Johnson doubled in the 10th and Taylor Eaves singled him home for the game-winning run. Mid-County then lost 12-5 to Heartland, Iowa before taking down Fort Smith Ark. 11-4. Johnson singled in the game. Johnson then homered and single in Mid-County’s 12-8 win over Bentonville, Ark. “The tournament was one of the best experiences of my life,†Johnson said. “Our host family was incredible. We had great team chemistry and we all had a great time. The championship could have come out a little better. “Now I have to wait about six to eight months for baseball to start up again. I told someone on Sunday I’m ready for district to start up. We should be pretty good at LC-M again with a lot of starters back and we want to defend our title.â€

More rain pushes Michigan race back to Tuesday BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — The second straight day of rain washed out another effort by NASCAR on Monday to run the 3M Performance 400 Nextel Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. The race, which was originally scheduled to be run on Sunday, was rescheduled for 10 a.m. ET Tuesday. Officials said it would be the first time in NASCAR's modern era, dating to 1973, that a race has been run on a Tuesday. The last time a Cup race was postponed for two consecutive days was April, 1997, at Talladega, Ala. That event was run two weeks later, after a race at Sonoma, Calif. The National Weather Service forecast for Tuesday called for a 30% chance of rain. FIND MORE STORIES IN: NASCAR | Nextel | Michigan | Cup | Speedway | Nextel Cup | Kasey Kahne NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said the race could be run as late as Wednesday, with the Cup transporters due to arrive in Bristol, Tenn., Thursday afternoon to set up for Saturday night's race. "It looks like we can do it logistically Wednesday, if necessary," Poston said. There was a steady stream of motorhomes and RVs leaving the track Monday as heavy rain fell in the morning and people's hopes faded. About 1,000 fans sat in the vast grandstand in the afternoon, trying to wait out the weather. Most of the drivers spent Monday hanging around their motorhomes, walking their dogs or wandering around the infield when the rain let up briefly, and hoping the race would be run. At one point, about 2 p.m., the track was being dried and appeared within about one hour of being ready to race, but a misty rain began to fall again and NASCAR finally gave up for the day at 4 p.m. The drivers found different ways of amusing themselves. "We've just been playing Nintendo in the motorhome, and we got cabin fever last night," said Carl Edwards, who won the June race at MIS. "We went to the university in Adrian (Mich.) and they let us use the gym there. So me and my trainer and my motorcoach driver went and worked out. "Then we came back to the motorhome for as long as we could and we took our little (ATV) out and ran around the infield in the rain and met some folks and had a pretty good time." Kasey Kahne said he was just bored by the long wait. "With the weather, we've just spent a lot of time in the rain or just waiting and there isn't a lot to do in these motorhomes," he said. "You run out of movies to watch, TV shows, and these satellite dishes don't work when it rain as hard as it has. You just wait and hope it quit raining so you can get out on the track." Kahne said the heavy overnight rains since Saturday have even kept him from getting much sleep. "Usually, when it rains, I can sleep," he said. "But it's been coming down so hard on the motorhome the last couple of nights I can barely sleep. It's been some serious water out here." Copyright 2007 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Here is an in-depth preview and recap of the 1992 3A State Championship game between Southlake Carroll and Coldspring shown on the Alamo High School Extra with host Craig Way. Carroll finished that season at 16-0 and finished 1993 with another 16-0 season before moving up to 4A in 1994. Coldspring finished with a 14-2 record. The 1992 team outscored opponents 803-122 and is considered by many to be the best 3A team of all time. This team is still #7 on the national list for points scored in a single season: National List What makes this scoring feat so remarkable is that it was done with a run-based offense and many times starters were pulled early in the 3rd quarter. This team may have easily scored 900+ points that year. None of the pass-oriented 5A championship teams that Carroll has produced in the last five years have scored as many points.

Basketball recruit Harris commits to A&M Dashan Harris, a four-star basketball recruit as rated by Rivals.com, put Texas A&M at the head of a long line of unofficial campus visits this summer. Apparently, his final visit Tuesday left the right impression because the 6-1 junior point guard from Montverde Academy in Orlando, Fla., committed to first-year A&M coach Mark Turgeon on Friday. This one was interesting because among the schools Harris turned down was Kentucky, where former A&M coach Billy Gillispie went in April. "When I was there on campus, I just felt like that was the right place for me," Harris said. "I had a great connection with coach Turgeon; he's a great coach and a great person. "It just felt like the right thing for me." Harris averaged 12.6 points and 10.1 assists as a junior. He chose the Aggies over Indiana, Kentucky, California, Florida State, Cincinnati and Oklahoma.
