  3. LC-M’s Johnson scores winning run for M-C Babe Ruth Special to the Leader The Orange Leader BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Taylor Eaves‚ two-out, full-count RBI single drove home Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Matt Johnson in the bottom of the 10th inning Monday as Mid-County’s 16-year-old All-Stars scored a 5-4 extra-inning win over Union County, Ark., to remain unbeaten at the Babe Ruth World Series. Johnson, whose three hits led a 12-hit Mid-County attack, had reached with his second double of the day after two were out. The win assured Mid-County, 3-0 in the tournament, of qualifying for the six-team single-elimination bracket play that begins Thursday. The Southeast Texas team plays Burlington, Iowa, at 12:30 p.m. today to wrap up its pool play competition. Eaves and Ryan Bearden each had two hits in a well-around attack that saw eight Mid-County players hit safely. Chad Sims‚ double was the only extra-base hit other than Johnson’s pair of two-baggers. A three-run second inning helped by three Union County errors gave Mid-County an early 4-1 lead. Sims opened the inning with a double and scored on an error. An error on Ryan Bearden’s single scored Matt Woods and then Bearden scored on the third miscue. Union County battled back to score a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to tie up the game at 4-4 against Mid-County pitcher Conrad Roberts. Roberts worked 8 and two-thirds innings, striking out 11 and allowing 10 hits and just two earned runs. Jesse Griffin retired all four batters he faced for the win. Mid-County opened the game‚s scoring in the bottom of the first when Vidor’s Trae Hester singled with two outs, stole second base and scored on Johnson’s first double. Union County tied the game in the top of the third with two hits and a walk off Roberts.
  4. Teams preparing for scrimmages Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader The first week of practice is over for most schools in the area with Vidor being the lone team to start things up Monday. Teams were at it again with the pads on Monday and getting ready for the first set of scrimmages coming up this weekend. Here is what a few coaches reported after Monday’s practices. Orangefield Head Coach Blake Morrison reported no major injuries as the Bobcats practiced late into the evening on Monday. Jeremy Granger was said to be progressing nicely at the running back position. “He has done real well running the football so far in practice,†Morrison added. “Jared (Helton) has also done a nice job reading the options.†Helton is the new starting quarterback for the Bobcats. Morrison also gave the quote of the day when asked how things went on Monday. “Coach Morrison is doing good just to survive the heat,†Morrison reported. Vidor The Pirates started practice for the first time Monday after holding spring practices. Two guys stood out for Coach Jeff Matthews on Monday as quarterback Roman Franklin and running back Bo Pillsbury got off to great starts. “Those two stood out the best on the first day,†Matthews said. “It was hot; I know that much. We had a couple guys lose 12 pounds out there. Even now at 7:30 p.m. it is 98 degrees. There is not a cool part of the day to practice.†Matthews said the Pirates retained a lot from spring practice and had no “mental busts†on Monday. “We are a year ahead compared to last year,†he added. Deweyville Head Coach Dwight Bickham has been impressed so far with the transition senior Michael Manning has made on the defensive side of the ball. Manning has moved from defensive end to safety, the most important position on defense in Bickham’s mind. “He is learning quick and has been out there breaking up passes,†Bickham said. “We looked a lot better today (Monday) than we did on Friday. We are going to push them hard over the next few days.†Bickham also reported there are no major injuries on the Pirates roster. WO-S There was some hard hitting going on with the Mustangs Monday and Head Coach Dan Hooks is looking for the team to get “better on defense†before Saturday’s scrimmage in Barbers Hill. “The only way to get better is to go through more reputitions,†Hooks said. Hooks is also starting to fall in love with the quarterback-running back combination of Ortavious Hypolite and DePauldrick Garrett. “Both are great kids and they compliment each other well,†Hooks added. “I know 7-on-7 helped Hypo a lot. Plus he can run the ball too so they are coming together.†Hooks pointed to Quintavius Garrett on defense who made the move from linebacker to nose guard and running back. “He didn’t play much and now is doing a great job at both positions,†Hooks reported.
  5. Area teams get seasons rolling Orange Leader Sports The Orange Leader There are still a few weeks to go before the football teams but volleyball teams start up today in a big way. 6. 1992 Highlights of running back Ray Fisher of Coldspring. These highlights are of the first 6 games of the season. Under the guidance of former head coach Ed Peveto, Fisher finished the 1992 season with 2,790 rushing yards while guiding the Class 3A Coldspring Trojans to a 14-2 season and their only state championship appearance in school history. Fisher was named 1st Team All-State RB by both AP and TSWA. Fisher was runner up for Class 3A MVP to Southlake Carroll QB Will Mantooth. Many have said his upright bullish running style reminds them of Earl Campbell. Parts 2 and 3 (games 7 thru 16) to be released soon. The opponents shown in this clip (in order) are: 9/4/92 Port Arthur SFA - Win 28-23 9/11/92 Woodville - Win 47-6 9/18/92 Houston Jeff Davis - Win 49-0 9/25/92 Crockett - Win 39-14 10/2/92 Grapeland - Loss 27-30 10/9/92 Trinity - Win 64-7
