  8. Lady Bobcats now play to collect 'W's Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — There is a new coach in Orangefield and there are new attitudes surrounding the Lady Bobcats’ volleyball season. Not to say the Lady Bobcats never tried to win in the past, it is just this season there is less only looking forward to basketball. “This district is loaded and we will not be satisfied with just competing anymore,†new Head Coach Linda Riddick said. “We are doing this with a purpose. Teams took us lightly in the past but we will not play that game anymore. We are telling the girls after each drill the drill was done for and with a purpose. The girls have changed and they are starting to get after it. They are working extremely hard this year.†This season will be a good year for a makeover of the minds and look of the Lady Bobcats after losing a lot to graduation last year. There are four returning players for this season with Kaylin “KK†Little, Laura Riddick, Aimee Scales and Allie Beach. “We did lose a lot to graduation last year but these girls have been around a while themselves,†Riddick added. “So far practices have been real good. We hit the door run, literally running.†The Lady Bobcats start at 9 a.m. with a scrimmage at Vidor. The first non-district match is at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Deweyville against the Lady Pirates. Orangefield will compete in the Vidor Tournament Aug. 16 and Aug. 18 and will also participate in the Buna Tournament Aug. 30 and Sept. 1. Orangefield’s first home match will be at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 17 against Buna. The Lady Bobcats open District 21-3A play at 5 p.m. Sept. 4 against defending district champion Silsbee. “We don’t have many non-district matches to prepare with,†Riddick said. “We will be ready. We are changing some attitudes and have been forming some new habits. Right now we are hitting on the fundamentals and getting the girls caught up. We also have a few learning new positions and with just four returning players we are also learning new chemistry.â€
  9. Youngsters to have big role for WO-S Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — With a few key veterans sprinkled in, the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustang volleyball program is counting on some “young hands†to make a huge difference this volleyball campaign. Gone are last year’s standouts that include Brittney Scott, Rebecca McMillon and Vanquanesha Jordan. However, the cupboard is far from bare. Back to make an impact are returning letter winners Jennipher Orebo, Brooke Sonnier, Kia Hartfield and Krista LeBouef. “We’re counting on those kids to step up and lead this year and they’re very capable of doing that,†said Lady Mustang head coach Gwen Kelly-Hall. “We lost several good hitters so that group is going to have to step up and fill that role.†The Lady Mustangs will be relying on some youngsters, including freshmen, to step up and answer the varsity call when District 21-3A play rolls around. “We have a tremendous freshmen group,†Kelly-Hall said. “I’ll probably let them stick together early on in non-district and let them get their feet, then we’ll probably move them up early in district.†Newcomers expected to pay dividends includes Marcquishola Solomon, Myquendria Warnell, Danayle Thomas, Joneshia Sims and Ryshaniqua Winbush. Seniors Orebo and Sonnier like what they see in the young crop of Mustangs. “We’re young, but I think we can really mesh well together as a team,†Sonnier said. “As seniors, Jen (Orebo) and I know we’re going to have to step it up and help lead the way.†“We have a team that doesn’t have a lot of experience back but it’s a team that has a lot of talent,†Orebo said. “I don’t think it will take long for us to gel. We’ve got a pretty tough schedule before district starts that will certainly get up prepared.†Orebo and Sonnier became quite the duo, working hard together over the course of the summer. “Brooke (Sonnier) and I really have worked hard this summer as far as our hitting and setting goes,†Orebo said. “I guess I’m more of a hitter and Brooke’s more of a setter but you have to be prepared to do both when called upon.†“Jen (Orebo) and I have been playing Summer League all summer and we have each other down pat pretty good now,†Sonnier said. “As seniors, you have to set a good example and we’re both willing to do that.†The Lady Mustangs open up the regular season Tuesday in Port Arthur in dual matches with both Port Arthur Memorial and Beaumont Ozen. They will also face Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Forest Brook and Beaumont Central before District 21-3A action cranks up Sept. 4 at Hamshire-Fannett. “The kids are looking at strong tests right from the start against 4A and 5A schools,†said Kelly-Hall. “That’s a tough schedule, but it certainly gets them prepared for what’s ahead. I think our 3A district is just as good as any 4A or 5A district around the area.†Last year Silsbee won the 21-3A crown with Hamshire-Fannett and Bridge City taking the second and third-place spots in what was a very tight race. This season should be no different. “I saw Silsbee on TV the other night and there were a bunch of familiar faces and they have five players that are back that received all-district honors,†Kelly-Hall said. “Bridge City, they have key people back and have looked awesome in summer ball. Hamshire lost a bunch a talent but it always seems that they just reload. Hopefully we can sneak up on some of them. We’re very young but I can definitely say we have a team of fighters that will never give up.â€

  16. Lady Cards expect bigger results in ’07 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Being knocked out of the playoffs in the bi-district round is still fresh on the minds of the Bridge City Lady Cardinals. The Lady Cardinals went perfect through the second half of District 21-3A play a year ago only to be bounced out early by the Liberty Lady Panthers. It was a night the Lady Cardinals remember and want make sure does not happen again. “We want the district title this season,†BC Head Coach Becca Matthews said on Wednesday. “We finished the second half of district perfect so I have told the girls we have to keep that going. I am not a fan of second and third.†Although the Lady Cardinals lost a couple key players from a year ago, the cupboard is far from empty. Returning will be Jenna and Lauren Angelle, Audrey Myers, Brittany James and Kayla Fullerton who were all key parts to last year’s team. Emily Kosh is also expected to make a difference in Bridge City along with several other new varsity players. The ones who are coming back will certainly be ready to take a trip past the bi-district round. “You always expect to make the playoffs,†Matthews said. “Then you want to go farther than you did the year before. This is the most competitive group I have ever had. Losing last year in the bi-district round wasn’t expect and it was very disappointing. The other day Audrey was talking about that loss. In a way it is OK to lose when you play your best and the girls know they didn’t play their best against Liberty. This team expects to do well this season.†Also returning a strong team from a year ago will be the Silsbee Lady Tigers who won the District 21-3A championship last year. Hamshire-Fannett is also expected to be strong again even after losing Cheyenne Craigen and Memri Carmon. “It looks to be the same three fighting for the top spot in the district,†Matthews added. “Those other teams will be right there though waiting for one of us to slip.†One of those other teams also resides in Orange County with the Orangefield Lady Bobcats and new head coach Linda Riddick. The Lady Bobcats and Lady Cardinals matches are always entertaining with both teams wanting to win against their rival. Matthews also expects Jasper and Kirbyville to be improved, Hardin-Jefferson to gain a lot of discipline and West Orange-Stark to be very competitive. “I am worried about everyone in this district,†Matthews said. The Lady Cardinals will be tested early in non-district by opening things up Tuesday at Port Neches-Groves before going to Nederland on Friday. Bridge City’s first tournament of the year will be in LaPorte Aug. 30-Sept. 1. The Lady Cardinals will also meet the Lady Bears at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School on Sept. 7. Bridge City opens district competition on Sept. 4 when it plays host to Hardin-Jefferson.
  17. Turnovers hurt Newton in that game.
  18. Bonds extends his own home run record with No. 757 SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds wasted no time adding to his home run record with No. 757. Bonds connected for a two-run shot into McCovey Cove in the first inning Wednesday night against Washington, one night after breaking Hank Aaron's 33-year-old record with his 756th. Bonds sent a 1-1 pitch from Tim Redding clocked at 94 mph into the bay beyond the right-field fence, his 35th career splash hit and second this year. Redding became the 447th pitcher to surrender a home run to Bonds after Mike Bacsik served up the record-breaking solo drive a night earlier. Bonds hit his 23rd homer of the season, then tipped his cap when he came out in the top of the second to play left field.
