  3. Reeling In 69th Annual TIFT gets underway BY MIKE GONZALEZ, The Brownsville Herald August 3, 2007 - 11:14PM A blue marlin hangs on the docks after it was measured and weight during the Texas International Fishing Tournament Friday evening at Port Isabel. The blue marlin was caught by Craig Hale and weight 381 pounds and was 102 1/8 inches long. PORT ISABEL — Craig Hale had a heck of a day. The Victoria resident is one of the many anglers participating in the 69th Annual Texas International Fishing Tournament and it turned out his name was above all others in the first full day of the fishing contest. The fisherman, aboard the Mechanical Man based out of Port O’Conner, brought in the biggest fish un-officially at 102 1/8 inches, 381-pound blue marlin with captain Ben Hilker by his side. Hale caught it at approximately 10:45 a.m. after a 45-minute fight using an artificial lure. The angler of about 20 years of experience said it was the most challenging fish he’s ever had to deal with. “It’s awesome. It’s my first blue marlin,†Hale said. “It jumped out of the water three times while I was fighting it.†Hale added, once the large fish jumped the first time, he and his crew knew it was a keeper. “It was a good fight,†Hale said. “I was tired afterwards.†All fish caught and brought to the dock at Southpoint Marina on Friday and today are considered unof-ficial until Sunday morning when the top anglers are awarded in a presentation at the SPI Convention Centre. Points are accumulated on the basis of the two days of fishing. First time TIFT participant Tommy Brown arrived with less than an hour remaining until the 8 p.m. dock time and brought in a yellow fin tuna that measured at 58½ inches, 135 pounds, which proved to be the heaviest in the tuna division. The 21-year-old came in dripping with sweat and somewhat exhausted due to the long day, but it was all worthwhile for the Schulenburg resident. “It was very exciting,†Brown said. “It was hard as heck.†Ryan Maza caught the largest shark measured at 72½ inches, 101.5 pounds while the largest bay fish was a 28-inch, 8.9 pound red fish reeled in by Leonel Teran, who was riding The Salty Dog. Port Mansfield resident Charles Buchen put his name on the board with a 73-inch, 73.51-pound white marlin. No barracuda was caught, which is unusual for the first day of TIFT tournament. Tournament director Betty Wells confirmed this year’s TIFT had 1,578 registrants and 526 boats, both of which are new tournament records. “Every year we hope for a better turn out and we did this year,†Wells said. “We had great weather and great fishing, and we’re looking forward to it (today).â€
  4. Young Cardinals set to hit the practice field Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — A lot has changed at Bridge City High School since the last time the Cardinals were on the football field. Gone is former coach Claude Tarver and so is two-year starting quarterback Johnny Dishon. In is first-year Head Coach Cris Stump and the quarterback question is still up in the air. What is not a question is that the Cardinals will report at 7 a.m. Monday to pick up equipment for sophomores, juniors and seniors with the first practice slated for 8 a.m. Bridge City figures to be done with the first practice at 9:30 a.m. and starting back up at 10:30 a.m. until noon. Freshman report at 3 p.m. with their first practice from 4-5:30 p.m. Stump reported that will be the schedule for the first week of practice and the Cardinals will put on pads for the first time on Friday. Stump is getting excited about holding the Cardinals first practice because it will also be his first practice as a head coach. “Everything is going to be new to them,†Stump added. “I expect the kids to continue what we saw in the spring. We can only wait and see. They took pretty well to what they were being told in the spring.†The Cardinals will be looking to replace Dishon who rushed for 1,178 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago as the Cardinals went 6-4 overall. Bridge City gained 251.3 yards a contest a year ago while giving up 301.3 yards on defense. They were outscored 209-191 in 2006. “We had a great turnout over the summer with our guys lifting weights,†Stump said. “ The Cardinals’ first scrimmage comes on Aug. 18 when they travel to Anahuac to face the Panthers. Freshmen will start at 9 a.m., JV is slated for 10 a.m. and varsity should kick off near 11 a.m. Bridge City will then play host to LC-M Aug. 23 with a tentative time frame set for freshman at 5 p.m., JV at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m. The Cardinals open their non-district schedule by playing host to Liberty Aug. 31 before having an off week Sept. 7. The Cardnals travel to Lumberton Sept. 14 before Beaumont Kelly comes to Bridge City Sept. 21. Stump and the Cardinals open the District 21-3A season with a road trip to Sour Lake to face the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks on Sept. 28.
  5. Pirates hoping to make playoffs for third straight time Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — A third straight trip to the playoffs is quite an accomplishment any time. Well, Deweyville has two straight under its belt, and No. 3 would be quite a feat as the Pirates hope to prepare well for what looks to be a much more rugged District 24-2A this season. The Pirates went 8-3 last year to place third in 24-2A and third-year head coach Dwight Bickham would love to see the Pirates make it 3-for-3 for the postseason in his tenure. “Every game in district will be a dogfight this year,†Bickham said. “Making the playoffs any year is tough and is an accomplishment and the kids are darn sure going to try to take it again.†District 24-2A will certainly be deep with talent, moreso than last year. 24-2A champion East Chambers is nearly back intact with 14 starters returning from last year’s 11-1 unit. Deweyville and Anahuac return 14 starters apiece. Buna, which was the runnerup last year, returns 12 and then there are the Hardin Hornets, which return 17 starters and players that qualified for this year’s State 7-on-7 Tournament. “The district is deep and so many teams have key players back,†Bickham said. “There are several new head coaches that will bring in different styles and concepts. Anything can happen this year.†The Pirates return nine starters off an offense that piled up nearly 400 yards a game last year including quarterback Brandon Powell and running back Stephen Gibson and a stout and promising line that paved the way to 3,516 yards on the ground a lone in 2006. However, gone is Willie Ray Smith Award finalist Justin Williams and his 2,294 yards and 32 TDs. Players like Gibson, junior Kane Kachtik and sophomore Keaton Addison will try to pick up the slack. “It’s tough when you lose a kid like Justin,†Bickham said. “He brought a lot to the table, that’s for sure. We have some kids that will hopefully step in and fill the void. I think we’ll be okay.†The Pirates will check in Monday morning at 8 a.m. to pick up equipment and hit the practice field. The Pirates will basically stay on that same schedule plan before they put on pads for the first time Friday. “The kids have shown up fairly well over the course of the summer,†Bickham said. “You always worry about conditioning that first week. It won’t take them long to adjust and get used to it.†The Pirates have two scrimmage dates slated. They will travel to Hemphill Aug. 18 and then will go to West Sabine Aug. 25 for a jamboree format against the host Tigers and Mount Union. The Pirates open up the regular season at home Aug. 31 against a solid Vinton (La.) unit. Their other non-district games include Evadale, High Island and Burkeville and they will open up the 24-2A schedule with a road trip to Hardin Sept. 28. “You always want to start out the season well,†Bickham said. “That Vinton game will certainly be a major test for us right out of the box.â€
  6. HS Football practice begins Monday. Please post your teams 2 a Days practice times and schedule.
  7. Bears eager to get 2007 started Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears are anxious. Coach Todd Moody is ready to get the boys on the field and start practice. Moody and the Bears have just a few days to go as the team will report to the weight room at 7:30 a.m. Monday with the first practice at about 8 a.m. What has Bear Country so excited is the a strong returning group of starters and a summer that saw more guys participate than ever before in Moody’s three seasons at LC-M. “Our kids encourage each other and really hold each other accountable for the team,†Moody said. “This group is excited about getting back out there and are also excited about the year ahead of them. That makes me excited about being their coach.†The Bears are coming off a 5-5 season and return four starters on both offense and defense. Headlining the offense will be the quarterback-tailback combination of President Driver and Kendrex Salter. Driver threw for 916 yards a year ago on 46-of-84 passing with 10 touchdowns. Salter is back after rushing for 722 yards with nine touchdowns on 127 carries. The defense will be led by Joseph Viator who had 97 tackles. LC-M’s defense allowed just 272.9 yards a game a year ago while the offense churned out 281.2 yards a contest. LC-M outscored its opponents 194-140 a season ago. The Bears travel to Willis for a scrimmage on Aug. 18 that starts at 6 p.m. before traveling to Bridge City on Aug. 23 for a scrimmage with freshman starting at 5 p.m. The first real game will be on Aug. 31 when the Bears play host to Conroe Caney Creek. The plays then play host to West Orange-Stark Sept. 7 before Houston Kashmere travels to LC-M on Sept. 14. The Bears have Sept. 21 open before starting District 22-4A play at home against Beaumont Central on Sept. 28. “The first week we just want to get back into the routine,†Moody said. “We like to see how much they recall. We always look forward to when they put the pads on for the first time and that will be on Friday. It is always a little different when they put the pads on.†Another aspect of the first week of practice is getting the team prepared to deal with the heat Southeast Texas can bear down. “It’s Southeast Texas weather,†Moody added. “The kids will just have to truck through it. They learn how to take care of themselves and how to be smart. We just have to get them ready for it and the coaches need to be ready for it.†The Bears practice schedule for the first week will start at 8 a.m. and run through 11 a.m. The team will restart things at 5 p.m. and finish around 7 p.m. On Thursday the Bears will only practice from 5-7 p.m.

  13. 9 year old signs pro contract...rediculous! Manchester United sign nine-year-old YouTube wonder kid By Simon Rabinovitch LONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Manchester United have signed a gifted nine-year-old after his grandfather sent the Premier League champions a DVD showcasing the boy's talents which has become a YouTube sensation. Rhain Davis, who was born in England but has lived in Australia since the age of four, was hailed by the British press on Thursday as the next Wayne Rooney after the United striker. The boy's dribbling and goalscoring prowess for an Under-10 side in Brisbane, Australia, feature in a four-minute YouTube clip, already viewed more than 800,000 times. United confirmed the signing but played down the hype around Davis, who has moved back to Cheshire in northern England with his father, near the club's training ground. "He's a member of our academy and we don't comment on individual members," a United spokesman told Reuters. He added that the club sign about 40 players of Davis's age every year and, as is standard, will decide annually whether to renew his contract or release him. What was so unusual in Davis's case was that his skills were brought to the attention of United's youth scouts by the DVD submission, which could inspire other hopefuls, the spokesman said. "We're bracing ourselves for a whole series of DVDs," he added. Davis has been thrilled at the chance to rub shoulders with some of his idols. "The best part has been meeting lots of players like Wayne Rooney," he told British newspapers. __________________
