Braves came out well! -
SE Texas all-stars ready for next step - college football [Hidden Content] FORT WORTH - For Earl Thomas and Brandon Williams, the education continues. Tuesday night at Amon Carter Stadium, the two local standouts played a part in the South squad's 14-0 victory over the North in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game. Now they'll reset their sights on joining the Big 12 fraternity. "We have a lot of good athletes coming out of the Golden Triangle," said Thomas, a West Orange-Stark product and incoming freshman at Texas. "We just want to be the next ones. We want to make our families and our hometowns proud of us." Williams, a Texas A&M signee, had a rugged night against some of the best players in the state. He completed 2 of 4 passes for 22 yards and had 24 rushing yards on nine carries. But Williams also fumbled twice and was nearly sacked in the end zone for a safety at the end of the game. He took it all in stride, however, sharing a laugh with coaches as the final seconds ticked away. Williams was a bona fide star for Central the last two seasons, earning district MVP honors both years as the Jaguars returned to the playoffs. But he said he doesn't really feel like he grow up in Southeast Texas. The rest of his family is from Baton Rouge, La., and he moved to Beaumont in fourth grade. "I think I realized I could be a good football player in middle school," Williams said. "Playing against everybody else, it felt like I was playing at a high level." Unlike most incoming freshmen, Williams hasn't been on campus this summer. Originally, his grades and test score were not approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse, forcing him to sit out. Williams said he has re-taken the standardized test and believes the Clearinghouse will approve his grades, but he's still waiting for a final word as to whether he'll be eligible this season. "I'm just waiting on (the Clearinghouse) to call back," he said. A&M coach Dennis Franchione did not directly discuss Williams' academic status Tuesday, but he did discuss his plans for Williams on the field. "Brandon is probably a guy that could play at a lot of different spots," Franchione said. "He was an outstanding athlete (at Central). I think he'd like the opportunity to start out at quarterback, and certainly we'll give him that opportunity. But obviously we're going to look at Brandon and say, 'Great athlete, great speed and a lot of things he can do.'" Meanwhile, Thomas, a cornerback from West Orange-Stark and a Texas signee, momentarily fumbled on his only kickoff return and was leveled inside the 5. His two punt returns netted 3 yards. But Thomas also was the South's second-leading tackler with 3 1/2 stops and a pass deflection. Thomas reported to UT in June. He said he's been getting daily lessons in humility, courtesy of the Texas veterans. "I stepped on the field and said, 'Golly, look at these guys.' I'm going to have to work that much harder," Thomas said. "I remember in 7-on-7 workouts, (wide receiver) Limas Sweed - he didn't blow past me, but he's so tall. He jumped over top of me and grabbed the ball. Then he flipped it to me. It reminded me of something I would do. I got him back, though. I got a pick (against) him later on."

Trade deadline's winners and losers By Jeff Passan Tuesday, Jul 31, 2007 4:52 pm EDT Early returns from the trade deadline show two clear winners and a pair of teams in Los Angeles whose inability to swing a deal does not bode well. Here are the rest of the winners and losers. Winners • Atlanta Braves: The Braves got one of baseball's best hitters in Mark Teixeira, a left-handed reliever in Ron Mahay and the second-best relief pitcher on the market in Octavio Dotel. Yes, they mortgaged quite a bit – Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus and Matt Harrison, all of whom went to Texas, were their Nos. 1-3 prospects on Baseball America's preseason list – but general manager John Schuerholz trusts his scouts to restock the minor leagues. And with the National League up for grabs, the Braves jumped in to take it. • Boston Red Sox: GM Theo Epstein never budged when Texas asked for Clay Buchholz or Jacoby Ellsbury, and the Red Sox still ended up with the best reliever out there. Kason Gabbard and David Murphy didn't have much of a future with Boston, and 17-year-old outfielder Engel Beltre is at least four years away. Isn't it funny to think back to spring training, when Boston was worried about its bullpen and Joel Pineiro was slated to close? How's this for the seventh, eighth and ninth: Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, Gagne and Jonathan Papelbon. • Texas Rangers: Maybe Jon Daniels would have been better served focusing on one big prospect for Gagne instead of his three-player haul. And perhaps he could have gotten more than one big-league-ready player for Teixeira and Mahay. Both are just picking nits. Daniels turned around a bereft farm system over a whirlwind 24 hours, and while that might not be enough to save his job over the next year or two, it could leave his incumbent sitting pretty. • New York Yankees: Complain away, Yankees fans, about Boston acquiring Gagne. Just know that GM Brian Cashman has better sense than to deal any of the Yankees' young starters when their rotation is full of pitchers who will be playing shuffleboard in a year or two. Getting Wilson Betemit before Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contract was a good buy, even if it does mean the Yankees must rely on Kyle Farnsworth or Joba Chamberlain in the late innings. • San Diego Padres: Over the last month, GM Kevin Towers has remade a team that was already rather good. In getting Rob Mackowiak (who, since June 29, has the major leagues' fifth-best batting average at .403) and Morgan Ensberg on Tuesday, the Padres added depth to complement the earlier acquisitions of Milton Bradley and Michael Barrett for pennies on dollar. To boost the presence while balancing the future (by trading Scott Linebrink for three pitching prospects), Towers toed the gentle line between overindulgence and passivity. Losers • Los Angeles: The Dodgers and Angels both needed a bat in the middle of their lineups. The Dodgers and Angels still need a bat in the middle of their lineups. Their eagerness to hold onto prospects is admirable, certainly, but there comes a point at which their gunshy nature – particularly the Angels' – becomes a detriment. The Angels have the pitching to win the AL West, maybe even the pennant. But that lineup just won't do it. • The Gagne whiffs: Condolences to Seattle, Milwaukee, Detroit and the New York Mets, whose fans will cringe at every lead from hereon blown in the eighth inning. • Houston Astros: Acquiring Ty Wigginton for Dan Wheeler set the standard for this deadline. The Astros blew it by holding onto Mark Loretta and Mike Lamb, seeing as their farm system is among baseball's worst. • Chicago White Sox: The asking price proved too high for outfielder Jermaine Dye, leaving the White Sox empty-handed. Though they still could move Jose Contreras, who likely will pass through waivers, Chicago had a chance to reap good value from either Jon Garland (for Edgar Renteria) or Javier Vazquez and chose not to. Related: Ron Mahay, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Hideki Okajima, David Murphy, Kason Gabbard, Jonathan Papelbon, Wilson Betemit, José Contreras, Ty Wigginton, Mark Teixeira, Milton Bradley, Scott Linebrink, Jon Garland, Mike Lamb, Kyle Farnsworth, Dan Wheeler, Octavio Dotel, Michael Barrett, Javier Vázquez, Jermaine Dye, Édgar RenterÃa, Mark Loretta, Ãlex RodrÃguez, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros, New York Mets, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers Email this Entry More MLB Entries

How Pacman Jones will spend his suspension
KFDM COOP replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Pacman might participate with TNA wrestling, but won't wrestle NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Adam "Pacman" Jones won't be wrestling for TNA Entertainment during his season-long suspension from the NFL. But the Tennessee Titans cornerback may participate with TNA Wrestling in other ways, according to his agent. The contract hasn't been signed yet, and TNA declined to comment Tuesday except to say an announcement is expected by the end of the week. Agent Michael Huyghue said he is mindful that Jones' NFL contract prohibits non-football activities that could cause injury. He said they have talked with the Titans about Jones' plans with TNA. "I think the club wants to see him do something, obviously, while we've got this time off before we report back," Huyghue said. "His intent is only to make appearances and do things and not get into any kind of physical activity that's going to jeopardize his health. "He's looking for a number of things obviously to occupy his time." Jones' attorney Worrick Robinson said TNA first approached Jones weeks ago and talks resumed in the past few days. "Anyone who has seen wrestling knows there are other opportunities to be involved," Robinson said. Huyghue said Jones' first appearance with TNA could come the weekend his teammates start their preseason schedule. The Titans' first exhibition game is against Washington on Aug. 11. Jones was suspended for the 2007 season in April for conduct detrimental to the NFL, and he can have his case reviewed after the Titans' 10th game, which is Nov. 19 at Denver. He has been arrested six times since being drafted by the Titans in April 2005, including June 22 when he turned himself in on two felony counts of coercion in a Las Vegas strip club fight that left a man paralyzed. Last week, the league denied Jones' bid to attend training camp. When he was suspended, Jones was given several requirements to meet, including devising a community service program that must be approved by the NFL. The league declined to comment Tuesday on whether Jones has come up with such a plan or if it had been approved. His agent is checking with the registrar at West Virginia University to see if Jones can take courses toward his degree online because he plans to stay in the Jacksonville, Fla., area and work out during his suspension. Jones won't start losing his $1.3 million salary until the first game checks are issued in September. "The fine was a significant penalty, unprecedented in the league," Huyghue said. "I'm sure he's mindful of the fact that's a significant amount of money." -

I compared it the last 2 years to several games and it was really close, especially spread wise. Example...if it had PNG 35 Lumberton 21, the game was usually within 14 points. -
It will be down soon.. ;D

The football-only proposal would reduce the state's 32 athletic districts into 16. Class 5A, for example, would be spit into Divisions I and II. The mission is to create more parity during the regular season. The measure was initiated by Wylie High School, which moved from Class 4A to 5A in 2006 but was lumped into a district with four schools with 4,000 or more students — Allen and three Plano schools. "All the big boys would be placed together," Breithaupt said of the proposal. "They won't be feasting on the little guys anymore."
