Earnhardt can't bring No. 8 with him to Hendrick CONCORD, N.C. — Dale Earnhardt Jr. will not be taking his familiar No. 8 with him to Hendrick Motorsports next season. Earnhardt is leaving Dale Earnhardt Inc. at the end of the season and had hoped to take No. 8 with him to his new team. His late grandfather, Ralph, used that number and Earnhardt picked it when he entered the Cup Series in 1999. Although teams do not own numbers — they are leased through NASCAR — DEI had the first right of refusal on the No. 8, and Hendrick officials said Wednesday they were unable to reach an agreement that would have made DEI pass on choosing the number for 2008. "We've been working hard to secure the No. 8 for Dale Jr.'s car number next season," said Marshall Carlson, general manager of Hendrick Motorsports. "Obviously, he has a tremendous history with that number, and we know how important it is to his fans. Unfortunately, we couldn't reach a point where the terms made sense, and now we have to move forward with other options." Hendrick officials didn't reveal what number Earnhardt will use when he starts his five-year deal with the team next season. His sponsor has also not been announced, but Hendrick officials said Budweiser will not be on his car. Earnhardt is widely recognized with his red Bud car and number, so this turn of events will give him a fresh new look next season. But having to part with his grandfather's number was difficult. "Our hope was to carry the No. 8 with Dale Jr. to his new team, but the last proposal Hendrick Motorsports received from DEI just wasn't viable," said Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, his sister and business manager. "It was a difficult decision, but all of us agreed that it was best to move in another direction," she said. "There's disappointment, of course, but we look forward to working with Hendrick Motorsports on what will be a great program for Dale Jr. and his fans in 2008."

Lady Bobcats down Deweyville in volleyball opener Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats made Coach Linda Riddick’s debut a successful one with a three-game sweep of the Deweyville Lady Pirates. Orangefield showed Monday the reasons why fans are eager to see the Lady Bobcats push for a playoff spot in District 21-3A after a 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 victory. Senior Laura Riddick led the way with 13 kills, three assists and five aces while fellow senior Kaylin “KK†Little was busy dishing out 17 assists and serving up five aces. It took a little while for the Lady Bobcats (1-0) to get out of the blocks but once they did there was a lot Coach Riddick was excited about. “We were still a little rusty but I was pleased with the match,†Riddick said. “They were in every play and that is exactly what we have talked about. There was a ton of hustle.†In the first game with the score tied at 10, Little got the Lady Bobcats going while serving with two aces and two assists to Riddick. Aimee Scales, who finished with four kills and three assists, then hit for four straight service points to give Orangefield a 19-11 lead. Scales was there to finish off the first game with a kill giving OF a 25-15 win. Deweyville jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second game but two straight aces from Orangefield’s Jessica Maass tied the score up. Maass also finished with five aces. Orangefield took the lead for good at 16-14 when Little set Riddick up again for a kill. The Lady Bobcats took control of Game 3 after Deweyville took a 6-4 lead. A Deweyville serve when out of bounds to pull Orangefield within 6-5 and a Allie Beach kill quickly tied the score. Laura Riddick went on a five-straight service point roll which included three straight aces to put OF up 10-6. Deweyville got to within 22-15 with Amanda Vincent serving but Orangefield’s Olivia Wagner ended the match a few minutes later with a kill. “The girls were making something happen on every play,†Linda Riddick said. “We were all talking and when someone called for help, several girls ran to get into position.†The Lady Bobcats will take part in the Vidor Tournament Thursday through Saturday and will also play host to Buna on Friday.

Riley commits to Heat for 3 more seasons By Tim Reynolds, The Associated Press MIAMI — Pat Riley isn't ready for another retirement. Riley said Monday he'll be back as coach of the Miami Heat for three more seasons, an announcement that ends months of speculation about his immediate future. The 62-year-old gave up coaching in 2003, then returned two years later and led the team to the 2006 NBA title. But the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs last spring and he was non-committal for months about whether he'd remain on the sideline. "I don't want to be a one and done guy," Riley said. He said it's simply coincidental that his three-year commitment is the same length of time that Shaquille O'Neal has left on his contract and the amount of time before Dwyane Wade can opt out of his extension with the club.
