www.panews.com PN-G will be minus two-way standout Tezeno in opener By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News PORT NECHES -- When Port Neches-Groves begins its 2007 season against La Marque, it plans to take the field without one of its team leaders. Senior two-way starter Kenneth Tezeno has been suspended from participation in this week's game after violating a team rule, head coach Matt Burnett told The News on Wednesday afternoon. A regular at tailback, right cornerback and kick returns, Tezeno is permitted to continue to participate in practice this week. But the Indians will not be able to include Tezeno on the traveling squad for Friday afternoon's regular-season opening game at Houston's Reliant Stadium against La Marque, the defending 4A Division II state champion and the No. 4-ranked Class 4A team in this year's state Associated Press pre-season high school poll. "Kenneth broke a team rule and he will be suspended until the time when I reevaluate the situation," Indians' chief Burnett said. Tezeno's absence will force the PN-G coaching staff to re-examine their starting lineups for the La Marque game. It was likely that Josh Wright would replace Tezeno as the regular at tailback. Burnett indicated that Jacob Broussard would replace Tezeno as the starter at right corner and Drew Barnett would start at left corner rather than Broussard. Tezeno was a member of the Port Arthur Super Team last Christmas and gave the Indians excellent speed as a runner, receiver, pass defender and kick returner.

www.panews.com Stefan Huber gearing up for late switch to center By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- Six snaps into his career as a varsity center, Stefan Huber gets to snap the ball in Reliant Stadium against Brenham. That's part of what Nederland's coaches are asking from the 6-5, 255-pound junior on Friday night. Then there's the aspect of leadership -- because Huber is the lone returning offensive starter last year. It's also fair to suggest that Stefan brings one of the bigger, larger frames of any Nederland player... even if he shows up for a newspaper interview with a smile and a baby face. Staying on the subject of baby for a minute -- Stefan may feel a bit the size of a baby when he shakes hands with a few of Brenham's bigger boys. Let's see, there's senior Luke Poehlmann -- 6-7, 255.... senior Anthony Chapel -- 5-9, 278.... junior Kip Maxwell, 6-2, 285.... junior Dayarion Broadnax, 5-11, 278.... and last but certainly not least, senior Desmond Carr -- 6-8, 360. Those Cubs may seem more like Bears than Cubs, but Stefan can only worry about the side of the line which Nederland can control. A starter for all 12 games on offense at strongside tackle in his sophomore season, Huber opened fall practice early this month as a guard. He only had the opportunity to snap the ball six times last Friday night at Jasper. That's OK because Huber starts at center ready or not. The 17-year-old son of Dr. Tighe and Carolyn Huber learned of his latest new assignment on Monday morning. Consequently, there will be butterflies in attendance inside that black jersey with the white number 54 on front and back. But fewer butterflies may show up inside Stefan than they did last year. That's the night when Huber made his first varsity start with La Marque serving as the opponent, and Reliant Stadium as the venue. "Talk about being nervous last year," Huber recalled. "It was a big start and it was La Marque which has been a powerhouse all through the 90s." There was one very soothing sedative prescribed for Huber on that occasion, though. The sophomore was surrounded by an all-veteran line of seniors Joe Isbell (left tackle), Adam Westbrook (left guard), Blaine Daniel (center), Matt Molina (right guard) and Phillip Biehle (tight end). None of them get to play this week or any other remaining week in the 2007 season. They've graduated. "It helped a lot being on a veteran offensive line," Stefan said. "Just all their help was tremendous and priceless. All the experiences they taught me... I messed up a little but I believed in my teammates and (offensive line coach David) coach Crommett. He taught me a lot last year. “I would have to call him one of my favorite coaches. He's always been there. He's a good teacher. He's tough on you but he's there for you. You can ask him anything and he has all the answers or he will find the answer for you." A veteran offensive line coach who has done a lot to establish a tradition of pride and performance in Nederland's blocking units, Crommett would love for Huber to become the Bulldogs' answer at center for these next two full seasons. "He (Huber) had the growing pains last year that they're all doing this year," Crommett said, putting the importance of experience into perspective. The mix-and-match efforts may take several weeks for those leading offensive line candidates Albert Clavijo, Nick Smith, Michael Benefield, and J.T. Copeland. It's a matter of Neumann and Crommett seeking to find the best combination to insert the abilities of five athletes into five positions.

Helton ready to fill big shoes left behind Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Orangefield fans grew to love three-year starting quarterback Brett Ramsey. Now there is a new kid on the block and Jared Helton is ready to make a name for himself on Friday nights. He will get his first chance Friday night against the Buna Cougars at F.L. McClain Stadium. Helton knows the recent Orangefield quarterback history and knows he has a lot to live up to. Sure he is a little nervous and excited but what player is not heading into a team’s first game of the season? “It (quarterback) is just another position on the field,†Helton said. “I was never nervous. Playing quarterback is something I have not done in two or three years and it was at first a little hard to come back to.†Orangefield Coach Blake Morrison has liked what he has seen out of Helton so far in practice and scrimmages. Helton did go down with an injury in last week’s scrimmage against Liberty and seems to have overcome the problem. “We held him out the rest of the way just to make sure he would be fine,†Morrison said. “He is our guy.†For The Orange Leader’s special football section Morrison discussed the need for Helton to become a more vocal leader with the Bobcats. “He is doing a good job of it,†Morrison added. “Jared will certainly end up doing a good job for us this year.†Helton is itching to get on the field Friday and put his skills to work against an opponent in a real-game situation. “It is a rush leading up to the game,†Helton said. “It will be great just to get the first game out of the way and I just hope we come out with a win. I am definitely a little nervous because there are a lot of responsibilities I need to take care of. I believe in my offensive line and all my teammates. I know they will give 100 percent on Friday. “We just have to be disciplined more than ever on Friday. We can’t have any offsides penalties and everyone from top to bottom must do the best they can. If we do that then everything else will fall together for us.â€

FSN SOUTHWEST ANNOUNCES DODGE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME OF THE WEEK 10-Game Package Will Showcase Top Teams From Texas FSN Southwest, which has telecast the Texas high school Class 5A Division I and Division II state championship football games since 1994, will telecast a live weekly Texas high school football game for the first time in 2007. The network has teamed with Dodge to present the DODGE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME OF THE WEEK, a 10-game package of regular-season games featuring the state’s top teams that will be shown in FSN Southwest’s five-state region covering Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and parts of New Mexico. To comply with University Interscholastic League rules prohibiting live football telecasts on Friday nights, the games will be played on either Thursdays or Saturdays, beginning tomorrow (Aug. 30) when Houston Stratford hosts Cypress Fairbanks at 7:00 PM CT. While most games will be carried live on FSN Southwest in all markets, there are some occasions when professional sports programming conflicts will occur in certain markets. On those dates, the high school game will be available in the affected markets on FSN Plus, an alternate feed offered to cable systems and cleared on a local channel. Check with the cable system in your market for availability and FSN Plus channel numbers. All games also will air live on DirecTV and Dish Network and on Fox College Sports. The regional DODGE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME OF THE WEEK is in addition to the previously announced national NIKE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME OF THE WEEK telecast on FSN regional networks across the country. Two of the Texas regional games have been elevated to the national package. Euless Trinity, ranked 6th in the preseason Texas Associated Press Class 5A poll and coming off a 22-21 playoff loss last year to two-time defending national champion Southlake Carroll, travels to meet West Texas powerhouse Odessa Permian on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 PM CT. John Curtis Christian (River Ridge, La.), ranked 15th in USA Today’s Super 25 national preseason poll, travels to Longview on Saturday, Sept. 22 for an 11:00 AM CT kickoff. Other confirmed games on the DODGE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME OF THE WEEK regional schedule include San Antonio O’Connor at San Antonio Madison on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 PM CT; Rockwall at South Garland on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 PM CT; Cinco Ranch at Katy on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 11:00 AM CT; and Texas AP preseason Class 5A No. 8 Allen at Plano East on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 PM CT. More games will be added to the schedule and will be announced later. Former Texas high school standouts Shea Walker and Chris Sanders will join play-by-play voices Craig Way and Kevin Eschenfelder to form the announcing teams. Walker, the 1981 District 22-5A Offensive MVP from Port Arthur Jefferson, was considered one of the top high school football wide receivers in Texas from 1980-81 before enjoying a stellar collegiate career at Texas A&M. Sanders was a two-year starting quarterback at Flower Mound Marcus and the 1995 Texas Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year before playing at SMU and Tennessee-Chattanooga. Eschenfelder and Sanders will call tomorrow’s opening game with sideline reporter Bart Enis, a member of Houston Stratford’s 1978 state championship team. 2007 DODGE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME OF THE WEEK SCHEDULE Day Date Time (CT) Teams Thu.
