  1. Pirates ground up Vinton, 8-6 Richard Nelson The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — The Deweyville Pirates ran up and down a wet field all night Friday and eeked out an 8-6 victory over the Vinton Lions. It took a blocked punt for a fouth-quarter safety to give Deweyville (1-0) the season-opening win over Vinton (0-1). The Pirates rushed for 365 yards and recorded 15 first downs, but turnovers kept them from paydirt. They lost two of three fumbles inside the Lions’ 5 yard line, and two interceptions also stopped drives. Keaton Addison scored for Deweyville on a one-yard run in the second quarter. The kick failed. Vinton tied it up in the third. Addison led the Pirates’ offense with 166 yards on 19 carries. Brandon Powell had 114 yards on 12 carries. Cruz Thraikille contributed 51 yards, and Steven Gibson added another 49. The Lions were held to 153 yards. “This was a big win against a team much larger than us,†said assistant coach Will Mallette. Deweyville plays Evadale on Friday, and Vinton plays South Cameron.
  2. Buna's rushing attacks blasts OF, 35-12 Jason Rollinson The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — The Buna Cougars gave the Orangefield’s young defense some quick experience Friday night, handing the Bobcats a 35-12 loss at F.L. McClain Stadium in the season opener for both schools. Buna’s Anthony Smith rushed 12 times for 83 yards and two touchdowns while adding a third score, a 36-yard interception return. But, as big as Smith was for the Cougars rushing attack, which ground out 325 yards on 50 carries, he wasn’t even the top rusher for Buna. Blanton Craft led all rushers with 116 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. Orangefield’s defense lacks experience, with just one returning starter from last year’s squad, and will need time to grow, Bobcat coach Blake Morrison said. “I thought the coaching staff prepared as hard as we could for this game,†Morrison said. “When you have a lot of kids that are new on the varsity level, it’s going to take some time. We’ve got a long ways to go. The speed of the game was faster than we expected and that will only fix itself with time.†On offense, senior Jared Helton moved over from his wideout position to take the Bobcat snaps and faced quite a challenge replacing three-year starter Brett Ramsey. Helton completed 5-of-8 passes for 103 yards with 2 interceptions and 2 touchdown strikes and led his team in rushing with 34 yards on 16 totes. His favorite receiver, Devon Green, hauled in four passes for 93 yards and two scores. The Bobcats totaled 200 yards of offense, with 97 coming on the ground and 103 through the air. “Buna is a good football team and played with a lot of confidence. The kids understand the scheme and just took care of business,†Morrison stated. Buna struck quick in the first quarter with a 62-yard scamper by Craft and after a Kyle Clark extra-point kick, his first of five successful boots, the Cougars led 7-0 with just 20 ticks off the clock. Later in the quarter, a Caleb Worthy 36-yard interception return set up the Bobcats’ first score. Helton found Green open in the end zone for a 22-yard scoring strike. The kick failed and the ‘Cats trailed 7-6 with 3:53 left in the first. Buna responded with a 65-yard drive capped off by a 3-yard keeper by quarterback Justin Carrell to take a 14-6 lead with 10:19 remaining in the first half. Smith then intercepted Helton’s pass at the Buna 36 and took it back 64 yards for another six points, and the Clark kick gave the Cougars a 21-6 edge at the break. The Bobcats cut the deficit to 21-12 on their first drive of the second half. Helton completed a 55-yard fly pattern to Green on a 3rd-and-7 play at the Orangefield 45 for his second touchdown of the evening with 10:10 left in the third. Buna held the Bobcats in check the rest of the game and was able to tack on two more scores, a 13-yard draw by Smith with 5:05 left in the third and a 5-yard plunge by Smith with 10:36 remaining in the fourth to seal the victory. It won’t get any easier for Orangefield as another 24-2A team awaits a trip to the Bobcats’ turf. East Chambers, which blanked Shepherd, 38-0 Friday, will take its power running attack led by fourth-year starting quarterback Traimain Thomas into Orangefield next week. “We’ll see a similar type of offensive scheme as we saw tonight for several of our future opponents,†Morrison said. “East Chambers runs the two-tight, and Splendora and Hamshire-Fannett like to run the Wing-T also. The kids have a week under their belt. We’ll see what happens next week and hopefully get better.†Buna 35, Orangefield 12
  3. Cardinals comeback falls short, 28-25, to Liberty Cody Pastorella The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Trailing 28-13 at half, the Bridge City Cardinals closed the gap to 28-25 with two minutes to play in Friday night’s loss to the Liberty Panthers at Cardinal Stadium. But that’s how it ended. Even after the Cardinals failed to recover their onside kick attempt, they were still given chances to win. Liberty running back Josh White, who ran for 223 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown, coughed up the Panthers’ fifth fumble in the game with just 1:36 to play. BC took over on its own 38-yard line; but on the ensuing play, junior quarterback Dustin Breaux sailed his fourth interception of the night into the hands of Liberty’s Steven Gee. Liberty’s James Freeman picked off two passes on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter when the score was 28-19. The first pick came with 11 minutes still to play and the second with four minutes left. BC finally cut the score to 28-25 when Breaux darted around the left side for a six-yard run and his third rushing touchdown of the game. Breaux scored through the air as well. He hooked up with Luke Rhodes in the third quarter which made the score 28-19. Breaux was 13-of-35 passing for 197 yards. Rhodes grabbed eight passes for 129 yards, including a 31-yard play on third down with time ticking away. Breaux led the Cardinals in rushing with 98 yards on 19 carries. Breaux’s running mate Joe Robertson picked up 70 yards on 15 carries and also caught four passes for 37 yards. The Cardinals looked sharp to start the game. Breaux came out of the gates for 35 yards on the ground and 44 yards through the air on 4-of-5 passing. Breaux finished the 17-play opening drive with a 2-yard sneak up the middle on a fourth-and-goal situation. The Panthers quickly responded with a score of their own when quarterback Jon Erik Zalesak punched in a 1-yard sneak after just nine plays and 2:30 minutes with the ball. That score knotted the game at 7. Not to be outdone, Breaux toasted the Liberty defense on the fourth play of BC’s second drive with a 51-yard scamper that pushed the lead to 13-7. White responded with a 73-yard bruising run up the middle that set him free around the 40-yard line and no one could catch him from there, making the score 13-13 at the end of the first quarter. BC’s next two possessions ended with blocked punts and set up Liberty with great field position. Liberty made the score 19-13 in the second quarter when Zalesak hooked up with Gee for a 17-yard touchdown play. Later in the quarter, the Panthers stretched their lead to 25-13 after Zalesak punched in his second 1-yard touchdown sneak. Liberty added a field goal before the half on a 26-yard laser from Josue Cleto.
