  1. Thought it would never get here. SETXsports.com will have updates on all the games tonight here on the site. Stay with the #1 site for Sports in Southeast Texas.
  2. Pee Wee coach found guilty for brawl Associated Press A former Pee Wee football coach who was part of videotaped brawl that was downloaded around the world was found guilty Thursday of assaulting a referee. Robert Watson, 40, faces up to a year in jail and a $40,000 fine for punching 18-year-old Marc Benavides after Benavides tried to remove him from the final moments of the Pee Wee Super Bowl in November. A jury was determining the sentence. An amateur video shows Watson charging onto a field and tackling Benavides, which escalates into a melee involving a mob of parents.
  3. Pirates open new stadium Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — One of the most intriguing season openers will come at Deweyville’s Pirate Stadium tonight as the Pirates will lock horns with the Vinton (La.) Lions. It will be a night of firsts as well. It will mark the first game that the Pirates will get to play at their new stadium at the high school and it will also be the first meeting ever between the two schools. “We’re kinda joking around and calling it the ‘Border Brawl’â€, said third-year Pirate head coach Dwight Bickham. “I think it’s a nice game between two good communities. It should be one heckuva football game too.†Both the Pirates and Lions made the playoffs out of their respective districts a year ago, adding on to the excitement. The Pirates return a whopping nine starters on the offensive side of the ball and five on defense from last year’s 8-3 unit. Leading the way is quarterback Brandon Powell, who passed for 778 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior. The Pirates are leaning on the likes of Stephen Gibson, Kane Kachtik and Keeton Addison to carry the workload out of the backfield. The Pirates lost 2,300-yard rusher Justin Williams to graduation. Bickham got a good look at the Lions when they scrimmaged Oakdale and the Sulphur JV in recent weeks and came away very impressed. “Vinton has some tremendous athletes,†Bickham said. “They have excellent team speed. They have a quarterback that is really good and receivers that can go get it. They like to spread the ball out and get in the ‘gun’. They’ll certainly be a big challenge for our defense.†The Pirates have seen all kinds of formations in their scrimmages against the likes of Hemphill, Center, West Sabine and Mount Enterprise. “All of those scrimmages really helped us because we got four different looks, and that’s great early in the season because it helps you prepare for everything. The kids have played really well but, of course, it’s just scrimmages and it’s always hard to tell until that first real Friday night.†The Pirates are also “giddy†about playing their first game ever at the “new†Pirate Stadium. “The kids are excited because they’ve been waiting for this moment for quite some time,†Bickham said. “I think they’re also feeling a little unfair pressure with it being in the new stadium and all. They’ll settle down though. It should be a great season opener and I think it gives both teams a very good test early on and you always can use that.†Predictions Wade’s Pick: Deweyville 35, Vinton 34 Pruett’s Pick: Deweyville 46, Vinton 40 Rollinson’s Pick: Deweyville 42, Vinton 28

  7. Young Stangs gearing up for fierce Broncos Van Wade The Orange Leader Two of Southeast Texas’ most prominent programs will lock horns in quite a non-district “doozie†tonight at Dan R. Hooks Stadium at West Orange-Stark High School. Both the West Orange-Stark Mustangs and Dayton Broncos captured their respective district titles last year with undefeated marks with WO-S going 7-0 in District 21-3A and the Broncos going 7-0 in District 22-4A. The Mustangs, 11-1 in 2006, went to Dayton last year in their opener and trailed the Broncos 9-6 in the third quarter before erupting for the game’s final 20 points to win 26-9. Both teams lost a lot of talent to graduation but the cupboard is far from bare on both sides of the ball. The Broncos return quarterback Cody Green, who became the full-time starter in Week Four last season. Green went on to pass for 1,589 yards and 20 touchdowns and also rushed for 689 yards on 95 carries and four TDs. Receiver A.J. Dugat is also one of seven offensive starters back in the mix. Dugat hauled in 47 passes for 706 yards and nine TDs in 2006. “I tell you what, those two guys will be a handful for our young defense,†said long-time Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “They have speed everywhere. They run that spread offense to near perfection. The Green kid reminds me of (Kenneth (Beasley). He’s just about has Beasley’s speed, yet he’s so much bigger, going about 6-3.†The Mustangs return just three starters on the defensive side of the ball off a defensive unit that allowed just a mere 177.8 yards per game in 2006. The Mustangs lost the services, thanks to graduation, to all-district performers such as quarterback Andre Bevil and receivers Earl Thomas and Jacoby Franks but have plenty of youngsters that hope to fill the bill. Leading the charge is veteran senior tailback DePauldrick Garrett. Garrett darted his way to 1,389 yards and 17 TDs on 191 carries as a junior. Veterans like senior receiver Ronnie Dennis and senior offensive linemen Tim Matherne and Brandon Allensworth should be a huge plus as well to help young junior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite out along with several other first-year starters. The Broncos are youthful on defense as well, returning just four starters from their 9-3 2006 unit. “Our offense has a lot of new faces but I think they performed well overall in our two scrimmages,†Hooks said. “I hope that carries over into the Dayton game. One thing for certain, we’ve got a tough one right out of the chute.†Coach Hooks has a lot of admiration for long-time Dayton head coach Jerry Stewart. ‘Coach Stewart and I go way back and you can guarantee that he will have the Broncos ready every week,†Hooks said. “They’re going to present a major challenge for our young kids. I know Dayton is probably a favorite to win but our kids have a lot of confidence and they think we have a great chance to win.†The Dayton tilt is just one of three straight non-district dates with Class 4A squads before 21-3A play cranks up for WO-S. The Mustangs go to an up-and-coming Little Cypress-Mauriceville in Week Two and then face Bay City in Week Three. “It’s a very tough schedule,†Hooks said. “You would like to win them all but like we tell the kids, it’s not the most important thing as long as you’re getting better. Hopefully we’ll be good and healthy by the time Hamshire-Fannett rolls in here Sept. 28 for district.†Predictions Wade’s Pick: Dayton 30. WO-S 26 Pruett’s Pick: Dayton 35, WO-S 20 Rollinson’s Pick: WO-S 21, Dayton 17
  8. Cards, Stump anxious for Liberty Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City Coach Cris Stump is used to setting his clock and waking up at around 6 a.m. These days the alarm clock has stopped waking up the rookie head coach. “These days I wake up myself,†Stump said. “I realize it is not six — it is four in the morning. Then I can’t go back to sleep.†Excuse Stump for being a little over-anxious these days as the Cardinals prepare for their first game against the Liberty Panthers. “I am anxious and ready to go,†Stump added. “We are going to tee it up and see what happens.†Not only is it Stump’s first game but it is the first game for a ton of Cardinals as the Redbirds only house one returning starter, center Patrick Carlton. The Cardinals themselves are excited and itching to tackle someone not in a red and white uniform. Besides two scrimmages, practices are built on taking on your teammates each and every day. Friday will be the first opportunity for Cardinals’ fans to get a look at a new spread offense implemented by Stump and his coaching staff. Bridge City is looking to recover from a graduation which took several key players with it. Gone is All-District quarterback Johnny Dishon and his 1,178 yards rushing and 13 total touchdowns. The Cardinals also lost five of their top receivers from a year ago who were led by Troy Bolton who hauled in 14 receptions for 192 yards before graduating. “People keep walking up and asking if we are ready,†Stump said. “I know I am ready and the kids are too. Scrimmages are one thing and Friday nights are very different. I really believe we will react to the situation in a positive manner.†To prepare his troops for the Friday night experience Stump has tried to simulate game speed through practices. “Finish practice faster than what you started,†Stump said has been the goal. The players are asked to never walk when going between drills or heading off the field. “We are getting better,†Stump added. “You can start to see all of a sudden the light switch is getting turned on around here.†The Cardinals oppoents, Liberty, is a playoff team from last year — even though the Panthers lost 60-0 to the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. Liberty went 4-7 overall last year and 3-2 in District 22-3A. Bridge City downed Liberty 24-20 a year ago in Liberty. “They have several kids back and are expecting to do things well,†Stump said. “They are expecting to come here and set a tone for their season. That is what everyone wants to do in the first game. Every year this is a close game from what I seen. “It will be exciting and everyone will be fired up, including me.â€
  9. Bears seek winning start Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — No matter what happens with the score tonight, Battlin’ Bears fans have the assurance from Little Cypress-Mauriceville Coach Todd Moody of one thing. The Bears are going to play hard and play with pride. It starts tonigh at 7 p.m. at Battlin’ Bear Stadium against Conroe Caney Creek. In just three years at the helm in LC-M Moody and the Bears have made strides in establishing a winning program fans can be proud of. LC-M went 5-5 a year ago and 4-3 in District 22-4A play just missing the playoffs, a spot the Bears have not been in since 1997. Moody is looking to change not only the playoff drought but the way LC-M fans participate in the action. “It is fun to see the excitement our fans have for this team,†Moody said. “There has been a lot of excitement and that is what you want for your program. We wanted to build the pride here and we are still in the process of developing it. This is what happens and I am very proud.†To see the program start to make the turn in three years has not surprised the third-year coach. “People want to be a part of something growing,†Moody added. “All the ingreidents a progam needs is right here and it starts with the people. They love to see how the kids work hard. Our fans know the kids are going to be ready to play with pride and to play hard. A team is going to have to play even harder to beat us.†Caney Creek was such a team last season getting past LC-M 21-12 in Conroe. “They went to the playoffs last season and have a returning quarterback that can move around,†Moody said. “They will be a good test for us right out of the gate. Caney Creek is exactly what you want in an opponent for a first game.†The Panthers are led by quarterback Joe Simmons who is listed to run a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. He rushed for over a 1,000 yards last year and threw for another 700 yards with 14 total touchdowns. “Everyone is 0-0,†Moody added. “We are very excited to start the season and the bottomline is nobody knows much about their team. Our kids are looking forward to the game but you can always expect there will be some first game mistakes. “Our kids are not cocky heading into the season but feel they are prepared and are going to perform well. The No. 1 thing is we have gotten better with each week and that is what you look for. They have responded and made all the corrections we have asked them to make.’

  15. Aug. 30, 2007, 3:33AM College freshman dies after collapsing from heat stroke © 2007 The Associated Press GAINESVILLE, Texas — An 18-year-old baseball player has died after suffering heat stroke during the first day of workouts at North Central Texas College. Josh Fant, a freshman pitcher, collapsed Monday while jogging near the end of the practice, said Condoa Parrent, college vice president of student services. He died Wednesday night at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office. Fant had participated in a practice that included throwing about 30 pitches and then rotating to the outfield, Parrent said. "It was nothing real strenuous," Parrent said. After he collapsed, Fant was taken indoors and iced down while an ambulance responded, Parrent said. Fant graduated from Granbury High School, where he had played on the varsity team for three years and pitched in district playoff games the last two, Granbury coach Pat Watson said.

  20. WWE suspends 10 for violating policy that requires drug tests World Wrestling Entertainment, under fire since one of its top stars was involved in a double-murder suicide, announced the suspension of 10 of its wrestlers on Thursday. They are being suspended for violating the WWE's "wellness policy." The move comes as investigators from the Albany, N.Y., district attorney's office have been gathering information about steroid use by WWE wrestlers as part of a wide ranging investigation into online pharmacies and the doctors who write prescriptions for them. WWE did not release the names of those suspended. A source close to the investigation said that WWE was told that the following wrestlers were among the clients of one of the pharmacies under investigation, Signature of Orlando: Shoichi Funaki, Dave Bautista, Adam "Edge" Copeland, Chris "Masters" Mordetsky, John "Johnny Nitro" Hennigan, and Shane Helms. Chris Benoit, the wrestler who killed his wife and son before hanging himself in June, was also a Signature client, as were two other wrestlers who recently died, Eddie Guerrero and Brian "Crush" Adams. The Albany district attorney's office is examining online prescription mills where doctors get paid as little as $25 to issue online prescriptions, which in turn are filled by friendly pharmacies. In addition to Signature, its investigators raided pharmacies in Mobile, Ala. and Bay Ridge, N.Y. Among those who have pleaded guilty are a Florida doctor named Claire Godfrey, who has admitted to prescribing performance-enhancing drugs at least two WWE wrestlers. In exchange for a plea that will keep her out of prison, she is cooperating with prosecutors. The suspensions, which were accompanied by a WWE pledge to make future actions public after Nov. 1, comes at a time of mounting pressure on the WWE. A spokesman for the House Energy & Commerce Committee said Thursday that its commerce subcommittee will be holding hearings into the WWE in late September. The aide said a witness list has not been finalized. Also looking into the company is the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. In a request that parallels what was asked of Major League Baseball, the committee is seeking a list of drugs covered by the WWE's policies, the number of tests it conducts annually, the protocols followed after a positive test and the procedures for awarding exemptions. The issue of steroids and WWE largely faded until late June, when Benoit killed his wife and son in their suburban Atlanta home before hanging himself. His body was found to have 10 times the normal level of testosterone, as well as the anti-anxiety drug Xanax and the painkiller hydrocodone, authorities said. The WWE instituted its current drug testing policy after the November 2005 death of Benoit's best friend, Guerrero, 38, who was found dead in a hotel room in Minneapolis. On Aug. 15, a day before WWE officials met with the Albany prosecutors, Adams, 44, was found dead of undetermined causes in his Florida home. Toxicology tests are pending. The WWE has insisted that it randomly tests its 180 athletes at least four times a year. But its program has been criticized by a number of people, including David Black, the president of Aegis Sciences, a laboratory in Nashville that runs the WWE's testing program. "The intention is not to punish, but to get them [the wrestlers] to engage in a different lifestyle," Black said in a July story in the New York Times.
