  6. No. 1 Miami Northwestern wins showdown before 32,000 DALLAS -- Miami Northwestern left no doubt who is the nation's top high school football team. And that's no bull. OK, actually, the Northwestern Bulls are No. 1 in the ESPN 25 rankings and will stay atop the fray after traveling to No. 2 Southlake (Texas) Carroll. In Saturday night's 29-21 victory over Carroll, the Bulls demonstrated the essence of their pass-oriented offense. Northwestern's superior speed beat out Carroll's historic four-year run of 49 consecutive wins and an emerald green-clad Carroll throng. "That's a great team we played," Northwestern coach Billy Rolle said. "Our offenses mirror each other; we both go with no huddle and spread [the field]." Northwestern (3-0) totaled 358 offensive yards, including 280 through the air against a ball-hawking defense. And the overflow crowd of 31,896 at Southern Methodist University's Ford Stadium -- the game also was televised nationally on ESPNU -- can confirm it.
  7. Kelly cruises to win against Houston Furr HOUSTON - Anthony Fazio passed for 112 yards and two touchdowns, and Torrejon Henry caught two scoring passes Saturday night as Kelly cruised to a 42-21 victory over Houston Furr. After the Bulldogs leaped to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on a 10-yard TD run by Chance Filer and a 30-yard interception return for another score by Chris Quinn, Fazio connected with Henry for a 68-yard bomb to pad the cushion to 21-0 early in the second period. Later in the second quarter, Fazio, who completed four of nine passes, hit Roman Vaughn for a 29-yard score. Henry, who had three receptions for 101 yards, caught his second TD pass - a 24-yarder - from backup quarterback Doug Prewitt, who came on to complete four of 12 attempts for 83 yards. Sharrod Narcisse tallied Kelly's final TD on a 15-yard run in the third quarter, making the score 42-13. The Bulldogs compiled 298 total yards with 195 coming through the air.
  8. [Hidden Content] Ozen wins despite bungles Pierre Harmon recovered a fumble to put the Panthers on the board in the first quarter, the first of two Ozen fumble recoveries in the end zone for scores. Seguin scored its lone touchdown in the same fashion. Though it wasn't pretty, the Panthers are in the win column going into district play. "We needed it; we needed it badly," said coach Ishan Rison, who got his first victory with the Panthers. "We've struggled to get it. I think our guys just have to learn how to win. However we got it, we got a 'W.'" Quarterback Cory Lewis had a game-high 44 rushing yards on eight attempts and had 109 total yards - singlehandedly outgaining Seguin's offense. Seguin took the lead early in the second quarter, as Ozen's deep punt snap was errant and bounced into the end zone. Lewis connected with Marquis Moore a 22-yard touchdown pass in the waning minutes of the second quarter to go into the half leading 13-8. Both teams missed opportunities to score. An Ozen trip into the red zone late in the second quarter ended on downs, and Seguin receiver Deshaun Singletary missed a pass from Kyle Hillsburg in the open later in the period, with no one in between Singletary and the end zone. That possession ended in a punt. The low-powered offense continued into the second half, and both teams found themselves struggling to get the ball across midfield without punting. Hillsburg saw another wide-open target drop a pass that could have resulted in a touchdown in the third quarter. Dion Cairo met the ball in stride, but it bounced off his hands for an incompletion. Seguin's defense stymied Ozen throughout the third quarter, swatting away a pass from Willie Jefferson after Jefferson had gained a step or two of separation from his defender. Two plays later, Patterson fumbled on a rushing play, and Seguin's Jacob Amasgua recovered to return the ball to the Matadors, who lost 11 yards on their first play of the ensuing drive followed by two more plays and another punt. Throughout the game, the Ozen running game of Javon Dartez and Lorenza Patterson had little success against the Matador defense. But the Panthers kept forcing mistakes out of Seguin, stripping a ball from the quarterback for a recovery eventually made by Mario Montalva for the Panthers' second defensive touchdown. The Matadors blocked Johnson's conversion attenot to make the score 19-8 midway through the fourth quarter. Before that fumble, Seguin's offense was starting to gain momentum, with their first two first downs of the second half coming with eight minutes left. After Montalva's touchdown, the Matadors finally moved the ball across midfield for the first time after halftime, but they threw an interception to Justin Isidore that ended their comeback bid. "We were one or two plays away from not winning, but we made a couple of plays to get it done," Rison said. The Matadors moved the ball to the Ozen 30-yard line, but turned it over on their final bid for an offensive score. Ozen, which is 1-2, will open District 22-4A play against Port Neches-Groves Sept. 28.
