  1. Splendora squeezes past Bobcats, 22-14 Kurt Allen The Orange Leader SPLENDORA — A ground attack was the order of the night as the Splendora Wildcats outdueled the Orangefield Bobcats 22-14 at Wildcat Stadium on Friday. Splendora (1-2) picked up its first victory of the season thanks to a combined 187 yards rushing by seniors Josh Ables and Austin Hill, while the Bobcats (0-3) kept it close with a 108-yard night by fullback Jeremy Granger. The Wildcats also got a late cushion with a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Drew Purdy to Anthony Upshaw to close out the game. Orangefield looked poised to strike on the game’s opening drive after quarterback Jared Helton picked up 15 yards on a pass to Ryan Granger. However, after allowing the Bobcats inside the Splendora 30, Mathew Kite, Bryce Luman and Will Swearingen stepped up defensively for the Wildcats, who got the ball after it was turned over on downs. Neither team was able to mount a significant drive until late in the first quarter when Splendora took advantage of decent field position. Moving ahead on the legs of Ables and Hill, the Wildcats drove deep before Ables capped off the push with a one-yard run. Then, on a fake PAT attempt, Purdy found Ables in the end zone for the two-point conversion and the 8-0 lead early in the second quarter. Orangefield responded on its next drive thanks to a 42-yard keeper by Helton and a 27-yard scoring run by Jeremy Granger. But a bad snap on the kick attempt prevented the Bobcats from getting the point and it was 8-6 midway through the second. Splendora answered right back after a short kickoff gave the Wildcats the ball near midfield. A 34-yard scamper by Hill eventually set up a five-yard scoring run by Ables, and the PAT made it 15-6. In the third quarter, Orangefield pulled within one point after a 17-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a two-yard Jeremy Granger run. The Bobcats converted the two-point conversion to make it 15-14 at the end of the period. But the Wildcats had one final, long drive in them, taking six minutes to drive 13 plays on runs by Ables, Hill and Joe Connell. Purdy’s six-yard pass to Upshaw, who caught the ball while sitting on the turf, put the game out of reach. The Bobcats will head into their open date week next week and will crank up District 21-3A play Sept. 28 when they visit the Silsbee Tigers.
