  7. 'E!'-lated Ganders notch first win By Dave Rogers Published September 15, 2007 He wasn’t the Torres many Lee High School fans were clamoring for, but Emanuel Torres sure won their hearts Friday night. The freshman kicker booted a line drive 43-yard field goal as time expired to give the Ganders an improbable 10-9 victory over Clear Creek at Stallworth Stadium. Chanting “E! E!,†the Lee players carried the kicker off the field on their shoulders after closing their three-game non-district schedule with their first victory of the season. “After I hit it, I just took off running,†he said. “I knew it was a good kick.†Forgive the Gander faithful if they weren’t as confident. The kick never got more than 20 feet off the ground and, at first glance, appeared it might be short. But it kept on going and had about five feet of distance left over when it cleared the crossbar and dived to the turf. Upraised arms from the two officials under the goal post set off a wild celebration. “There was no decision,†Lee head coach Dick Olin said about the option of trying a Hail Mary pass on fourth down from the Clear Creek 27-yard line with 5 seconds left. “You know, take a shot, you got a chance. This is great. It’s always good to win. Everybody’s happy. The kids will enjoy it. We’ve got a week off to get ready for district.†Wildcat coach Darrell Warden, former defensive coordinator for the Ganders, used his team’s final timeout to try to ice Lee’s young kicker. No dice. “I got nervous,†Torres said about the delay, but overall, I felt confident I was going to make it.†If he was nervous, you don’t want to know about his holder, backup quarterback Octavio Torres. “I was crying as I was waiting for the snap. You know he’s my little brother,†said the fellow who led Lee to the playoffs last year as QB. “But I had to suck it up. I had so much faith in him, I didn’t want to mess it up.†And, of course, there was another hiccup. The snap was hardly perfect from Joe Garcia, who was the team’s No. 3 center before being pressed into service last week. “It wasn’t exactly a spiral and it was on the other side of the tee, but it was good enough,†Octavio Torres said. “I had to make it work for my brother.†For the second week in a row, turnovers plagued Lee’s inconsistent offense. The Ganders went 77 yards in four plays to score on the game’s opening possession. Jarvis Moore merengue-danced his way to a 30-yard TD run and Torres’ kick gave Lee a 7-0 lead 1 minute, 17 seconds into the game. But the Ganders picked up only 53 total yards the rest of the first half and gave up a field goal with 11 seconds left after Clear Creek’s Marcus Davis broke through to block at Josh Jones punt at the Lee 33. Jones, Lee’s No. 1 quarterback, finished the game 12 for 29 passing for 144 yards. He threw one interception and gave up a late fumble when blindsided. That fumble left Clear Creek just 28 yards away from its go-ahead score, a 15-yard pass from Neal Warden to Justin Smith with 1:28 left to play. It appeared that the Wildcats were about to go 3-0 despite a strong effort by the Collin Biescke-led Lee defense. It included a pair of third-quarter fourth-down stops, one at the Lee 3-yard line. But the Wildcats got a bad snap and missed their extra-point, leaving Lee just enough room for the late dramatics. Moore finished with 85 yards on 16 carries, but Lee’s team rush totals were only 103 yards. Kevin Craft had five catches for 74 yards. Clear Creek got 102 yards rushing from Michael Guidry and Warden completed 13 of 25 passes for 118 yards. The Ganders are off next week and open District 21-5A play Sept. 28 against Kingwood. “We’ve got two weeks to get ready for Kingwood and get better offensively,†Olin said. “Our defense did a great job. Offensively, we didn’t play very well. “Tonight, we needed a freshman to win the game.â€

  17. Deweyville lambastes Colmesneil Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — It didn't take long for the Deweyville Pirates to flex their muscles against the Bulldogs of Colmesneil Friday night. The Pirates scored in a variety of ways early and often to destroy the Bulldogs 58-0 at Pirate Stadium. Deweyville (3-0) racked up 33 points alone in the first period and led 46-0 at intermission as the Bulldogs (0-3) turned the ball over four times in the first half. Two long interception returns for touchdowns by Stephen Gibson and Bryce Bellanger aided in the scoring onslaught. The Pirate defense has allowed just six points all season and limited the Bulldogs to just 16 yards of total offense. The game had a running clock the entire second half as plenty of Pirates from the JV unit also saw quality minutes. “The kids came out really focused tonight,†said Pirate head coach Dwight Bickham. “Our defense has been tremendous all season long. I was concerned about our offensive starts the first two games so we wanted to come out and make a statement early tonight and the kids responded.†The Pirates were going to play High Island on Friday but the Cardinals were devastated by Hurricane Humberto. Colmesneil had an open date and gave Deweyville a call as the game was setup. “We thank Colmesneil a lot for coming over here to play us because they didn’t have to,†Bickham said. “We were able to work a lot of kids in and out of the game most of the night. We had seven our eight JV kids that really stepped up and played well.†It didn't take long for the Pirates to hit pay dirt. After holding Colmesneil deep in its own territory, the Pirates got the ball at the Bulldog 28 and on their very first play from scrimmage, senior Pirate tailback Gibson took a pitch around the right side and darted into the end zone untouched for a 28-yard touchdown with 9:30 left in the first period. Deweyville scored yet again on its first play from scrimmage on its next series as quarterback Brandon Powell kept the ball around the left side, made one superb fake and then cruised to the end zone on a 30-yard gallop, enabling the Pirates to a 13-0 advantage with still 7:02 left in the first quarter. The Pirates struck quickly again in the first period. Bulldog punter Matt Adams saw a snap go over his head and into the end zone. He managed to bring it out to the 12 until he was met by a host of Pirates. Deweyville took over at the 12 and three plays later tailback Keeton Addison went around right end for an 8-yard touchdown to push the Pirates to a 20-0 cushion with 2:52 remaining in the first. Things only got worse for the visiting Bulldogs when Gibson picked off Colmesneil quarterback Luke Bumstead and returned the interception 45 yards to push the Pirates up 26-0 with still 2:06 left in the first. The bottom fell out on the Bulldogs on their next possession as tailback David Harris fumbled the ball away to Pirate defensive lineman Channing O'Bannon. Three plays later the Pirates found the end zone again when Powell found receiver Seth Williams along the left side for a 10-yard touchdown pass to give the Pirates a 33-0 edge with 0:47 left in the first. Pirate defensive back Bellanger tacked on the Pirates' sixth touchdown of the night when he picked off Bumstead and raced all the way down the left sideline for an 86-yard interception for a touchdown to up the Pirate lead to 40-0 with 3:27 remaining in the first half. Powell put the Pirates up 46-0 just before halftime when the senior leader found enough room in the Bulldog to score from 25 yards up the middle with 0:56 left in the second period. The Pirates outgained the Bulldogs 97-19 in the first half. Powell had three carries for 61 yards and the two scores. Colmesneil managed just eight yards rushing on 26 first-half carries. Players from the irate JV squad got involved in the second-half scoring act. Tailback Eric Avilia carried the times for 37 yards on a third-quarter 47-yard scoring drive and he capped it off with a 21-yard touchdown gallop across the middle to make it 52-0 with 5:26 remaining in the third. After Cruz Thrailkille bulled his way on a 35-yard run, the Pirates' Joe Dooley capped off a late third-quarter two-play scoring drive by busting loose up the middle on a 32-yard scoring jaunt, upping the lead to 58-0 with 0:02 remaining in the third. The Pirates finished with 265 yards of total offense. The Pirates will close out their non-district portion of the schedule at Burkeville next Friday. Deweyville will visit the Hardin Hornets Sept. 28 in its first District 24-2A game. “The kids need to stay focused and they have for the most part,†Bickham said. “Our district looks much tougher than it has in the last couple years. Every game is going to be a tough one. Hopefully we can stay healthy after the Burkeville game. Hardin is one of those teams that have improved a lot and we have to go to their place this year.â€
