Pirates seek 4-0 start against fast Mustangs
KFDM COOP posted a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Pirates seek 4-0 start against fast Mustangs Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — Defense has certainly been the theme for the Deweyville Pirates and their 3-0 start this season. In their wins against Vinton (La.), Evadale and Colmesneil, the Pirates have allowed just 94 yards per contest, including just 16 in last week’s romp over Colmesneil. Leading the way on defense has been hard-nosed players like Dalton Estes, Hunter Manning, Justin Morcum, Bryce Belanger and Jimmy Folsom. “The kids have been tough on defense thus far and we’re extremely happy with what they’ve accomplished so far,†said Pirate head coach Dwight Bickham. “This week, they’ll have a chance to look at quite bit of speed in Burkeville. The kids have done a good job at keeping everything in front of them and they’ve caused a few turnovers, that’s always a good thing.†Tonight, the Pirates will try to wrap up a perfect non-district mark by visiting the 0-3 Burkeville Mustangs. The Mustangs have suffered through some tough losses, including a 62-6 setback to Deweyville’s District 22-4A rival Buna. “The kids need to stay focused and they have for the most part,†said Bickham right after the Colmesneil game. “Our district looks much tougher than it has in the last couple years. Every game is going to be a tough one. Hopefully we can stay healthy after the Burkeville game. Hardin is one of those teams that have improved a lot and we have to go to their place this year.†The Pirates have doing most of their offensive “business†on the ground with a lot of backs getting involved behind an experienced offensive line. Leading the Deweyville ground game is sophomore tailback Keeton Addison, who has zipped around the field for 312 yards on 41 carries. Senior quarterback Brandon Powell has found his way to 214 yards on 23 carries. Seniors Cruzz Thrailkille (20-129) and Stephen Gibson (15-123) have also fit in nicely and have been strong on the defensive side of the ball as well. The Mustangs returned seven starters back on both sides of the ball from last year’s 2-7 unit. Deweyville tore past the Mustangs 59-8 at old Pirate Stadium last season. Burkeville is led by the likes of quarterback Walter McBride, fullback William McBride and receiver Daniel Limbrick. Cordell Lewis returns as well after leading the squad in tackles a year ago. Though the Mustangs have gotten off to a relative bad start, Bickham knows the Pirates will have to be well-prepared going in. “Burkeville, they’re faster than grease lighting,†Bickham said. “They’re very athletic. We know very little about each other because neither one of us have film on each other. At this time of year, you’re almost preparing for everything on both the offensive and defensive perspective.†The Pirates are looking forward to their last non-district tuneup. They will start 24-2A action next week by taking a road trip to Hardin to face the 3-0 Hornets. District 24-2A is a collective 17-4 in its non-district games thus far with both East Chambers and Buna sitting at 3-0 as well. -
Bridge City hopes to put past in the past, focus on Kelly Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City coach Cris Stump had an easy message for the Cardinals this past Saturday after watching game film. “Learn and burn†was his statement to his young Cardinals, who had just been thumped 48-7 by the Lumberton Raiders. “You learn from it and then you burn it,†Stump said on Wednesday. “We had a pretty good film session Saturday in no air conditioning. We have a lot to correct.†The Cardinals left the field in Lumberton having given up 497 yards of offense, with 394 coming on the ground. While the Raiders were chewing up yards, they were also doing a good job keeping the Cardinals offense at bay. Bridge City (0-2) could only muster up 130 yards. So that tape is burned and now the Cardinals turn their eyes toward tonight’s 7:30 kickoff against the Monsignor Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs at Larry B. Ward Stadium. The two teams are far from new opponents as Bridge City holds a 7-5 mark against Kelly (3-0), with the two teams battling to a tie in 1996. Kelly’s last win in the series came in 1997 when the Bulldogs blanked the Cardinals, 35-0. Bridge City has outscored Kelly 267-218 in the 13 games, an average of 20.5-16.7. “Kelly is a good football team,†Stump said. “Offensively they are a real good football team and will be a challenge for us to stop Lumberton was more physical and Kelly likes to speed things up a bit more. They certainly have the guys to do it.†One of the main guys for Kelly’s attack is quarterback Anthony Fazio who will miss this game due to a shoulder injury. Fazio passed for 112 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 42-21 win over Houston Furr. Junior Douglas Prewitt will be the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs tonight. “It is just one tough game after the other,†Stump said. “We are going to have to play our best and eliminate our mistakes to even have a chance.†On the season, the Cardinals have averaged 247.5 yards a contest while giving up 441 yards to their opponents. Quarterback Dustin Breaux leads the offense with 111 yards rushing and 280 yards passing and a total of four touchdowns. Sophomore Joe Robertson has 75 yards rushing on the season. Breaux is coming off a sore knee from last week’s game. “He is real close to being back to a 100 percent,†Stump said. “He strained a muscle above his knee. He is a tough kid and will not let this hold him out.†Kelly Coach Mike Long is not looking past Bridge City in any way, even after the Cardinals’ lop-sided loss to Lumberton. “They (Cardinals) are a scrappy bunch and are well-coached,†Long said. “Bridge City is young and I certainly don’t mind (quarterback Johnny) Dishon being graduated. They are going to be tough and will be hungry for a win. “Lumberton is a very good football team and we are not the Raiders. We are really going to have to play well to stay with the Cardinals.†Stump also reported backup quarterback Blake Hubbard will be out six weeks with a broken nose. Not all injury news has been bad news lately in Bridge City as Kevin Buchanon is back and working into shape after having a hernia. No matter who plays Long knows his team will still have to be focused come game time tonight. “I am stressing no turnovers and playing hard,†Long said. “Offensively Bridge City spreads things out and it is hard to tackle when they get the ball into open space. We are teaching our kids to run to the football.†Come Saturday Stump hopes the Cardinals took what they learned and burned the Bulldogs.

Yao to miss team events for Special Olympics opening All-Star center will skip media day, two practices to appear in Shanghai Rockets center Yao Ming will miss the team's Oct. 1 media day and first two days of practice to appear at the Special Olympics opening in Shanghai, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said Thursday. Yao will be fined for missing media day and the practices, but Morey would not say the amount of the media day fine. Media day attendance is a high priority for the NBA and fines can exceed $20,000. The fines for missing practices are $2,500 for the first practice and $5,000 for the second. Yao is scheduled to join the Rockets in Austin on Oct. 4, in time for the third practice. "Yao is not going to be at the start of training camp. He's basically taking an extremely prominent role in the Special Olympics in his hometown," Morey said. "It is a setback. We've been trying to avoid it. That's why we've been sending coaches over there, CD (former Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson) and others, to keep him up to speed, "I don't think we can look at it as anything but a bit of a setback to getting ready. He will miss the first three days and we're aware he will be a bit jetlagged when he arrives, but he'll be ready to go. There is a mandatory fine for missing media day and practices, which he is absorbing." Morey said Yao will not be playing in the China National team exhibition games that also could have made him late for the start of training camp, but that his role in the Special Olympics is very important in Shanghai. "He would never want to miss training camp," Morey said. "He is the last player that wants to miss practice time. He is quite distraught over it. He had no choice. He understands we have to fine him. He is going to call his teammates and explain it to them."
