  1. They beat Kilgore (4A). Diboll is playing very well to.
  2. Crockett seems to be playing better than Carthage so far this year.
  3. Battered, bruised Lamar soccer back for first official home game BEAUMONT - When you see Lamar defender Leslie Myers, and when you take a look at her slight build and her 5-foot-6 frame, plenty of words might come to mind. "Beast" is not one of them. But somehow, that's the nickname she's been stuck with. At 1 p.m. today in Cardinal Stadium, Myers and the rest of the Lamar soccer team will play Grambling State, kicking off the first official home game in program history. Beast will be in attendance, wearing No. 5. She got the nickname at some point during the Cardinals' first six games of the season - all on the road, all losses. How? During her freshman season at Navarro College, Myers fractured a rib that never healed properly. The fracture is close to the middle of her chest, which throbs every time she plays. Doctors have told her they can't do anything about it. "They said I'm just going to have to live with pain the rest of my life," Myers said. So she still plays, because she loves soccer. But for her, just getting on the field takes a little extra effort. Before Myers pulls a jersey over her head, she buckles on a foam-and-plastic "skeleton pad," which looks a little like a baseball catcher's chest protector. Then a trainer wraps a giant Ace bandage around the skeleton pad to hold everything together. Yet when the whistle blows, Myers hardly plays the way her size would indicate. A junior-college All-American at Navarro last year, she has not only been known to deliver a forearm shiver, but to brag about it later. All this led Lamar assistant coach Jodi Clugston to give Myers her nickname. And so Leslie Myers is "Beast," whether she wants to be or not. "When I'm playing, I hit a lot of people. I don't back down," Myers said, laughing. "After a game, or when I'm running - or when I have to take deep breaths - (the rib fracture) bothers me." On this inaugural team at Lamar, Myers said, everyone cares about the game, and everyone plays with heart. Through the early going, however, the Cardinals have learned two things: That winning as a rookie program is not easy, and that it requires much more than heart. How ugly has it been? Consider these numbers: Lamar has one goal. Its opponents have scored 48. Lamar is averaging 4.0 shots per game. Its opponents are averaging 33.3. The Cardinals' closest margin was in their first game, when they lost 5-0 to Eastern Washington. "For sure, our offense hasn't been there," coach Matthew Dillon said. "I don't think we've had enough possession to generate enough offense. Some of that has to do with fitness, with altitude, with the pressure applied to us from the other team." But for whatever reason, the Cardinals hardly looked like an 0-6 team during practice this week. True, maybe they didn't expect six blowouts to start the season. But they also knew this thing would take a little time to get going. "You look at the realities," Dillon said. "Coming into the season, no coach says, 'Hey, we're going to drop our first six.' We all expect to win all of them. But ... the reality is that we've got three players from junior college, and none of these kids played in Division I before this year. Baseball players talk about how it's different when you get to the show. Soccer is no different." Myers said the great thing about this first team is it hasn't give up, even when the score gets out of hand. Opposing coaches have told the Lamar players afterward they were impressed with the Cardinals' effort, even when it became obvious they wouldn't rally for a victory. Perhaps today's game will help boost the Cardinals' morale, too. It's against Grambling, which won the Southwestern Athletic Conference title last year but is winless through five games. Good-news alert: Lamar has played one SWAC opponent already this season, albeit in an exhibition last month at Cardinal Stadium. LU won that game, 6-2, in the only time they've tasted victory of any kind. Another win would be more than OK by Myers, who's already endured her fair share of pain this season. After a Friday morning practice, she showed off a long, nasty cut on her left leg. Surely, coming from a player who earned the nickname "Beast," this had to be another battle scar. "Well, actually, I burned myself with an iron," she said. "I guess I should come up with a story. But I was ironing my clothes, because they were really wrinkled and I was bored. That wasn't fun." Surprisingly, the soccer has been.

  5. Kelly, Cardinals find success at A&M Invitational Van Wade The Orange Leader COLLEGE STATION — The Bridge City Cardinal cross country teams placed extremely well running at the Texas A&M Invitational Cross Country Meet Saturday against a field that included over 100 runners in each race. Cardinal senior Ryan Kelly zipped to a teriffic first-place finish in the Class 3A Division, covering the three-mile course in 17 minutes, 21 seconds. “Individually he (Kelly) did incredible,†said Cardinal head coach Cody Knight. “We did really well. t was a tough hot race. It was nearly 95-degrees so our times were not the best but we competed well.†Both the Cardinal girls and boys placed a solid fourth in their respective Class 3A divisions. Kelly was followed by Cardinal teammates Tim Cude (14th, 18:47), Kirby Shepherd (17th, 19:18), Brandon Simoneaux (22nd, 19:33), Sawyer Hogan (26th, 19:59), Armando Chavez (52nd, 20:34), Josh Blakeney (62nd, 20:49), Hunter Stevens (74th, 21.04), Mark Virva (91st, 21:40), Jacob Worthington (106th, 22:45), Bryan Godwin (124th, 23:41), Aaron Hodges (126th, 23.50), and Matthew Wappler (137th, 25:00). “We did a really good job,†Knight added. “We have high expectations this year and we want to be in the state meet in November. This team showed right now we are not up to par with some teams in our region that competed with us today. The times were close enough though that the difference can be made up.†Freshman Mary Nguyen paced the Lady Cardinals, finishing 12th over a two-mile course in 13.43. She was followed by teammates Jessica Franklin (20th, 14:06), Lisa Huynh *(34th, 14:39), Shae Garriga (36th, 14:39), Ariel Chesson (39th, 14:46), Lan Vu (53rd, 15.21), Melissa Pittman (58th, 15:26), Kim Truong (88th, 17:33) and Sarah Fontenot (91st, 17:58).
  6. Rock-A-Noos stops Central, 3-2 By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News PORT NECHES — Trailing 2-1, the Lady Indians rallied in games four and five to beat the Central Lady Jaguars 3-2 in District 22-4A volleyball action Friday night at the Reservation. The win kept the Lady Indians perfect in district with a 6-0 record. The Lady Indians are 15-8 overall. With the loss, the Lady Jaguars fell to 15-6 overall and 3-3 in district. Game 4, which was the make or break game for Rock-A-Noos, went back and forth most of the way. The lead changed hands six times before PN-G took a 9-8 lead. The Lady Indians never lost the lead from that point on but Central kept it close until PN-G scored nine of the final 14 points to finish with a 25-19 win. Game 5 started just as Game 4 did but once the Lady Indians claimed a 4-3 lead, they never looked back, knocking out the Jags 15-8 for the game and the match. “That was our toughest match so far,†Indians coach Barbara Comeaux said. “We’ve been down before and we have been in matches that have gone five games, but that was our toughest match. Central is a very tough opponent. They are so good offensively and they never quit. Even after we ran away with the first game, they came right back.†PN-G took Game 1 25-19, scoring 12 of the final 15 points. Like Comeaux said, the Lady Jags did not roll over. Central took games three and four with scores of 25-21 and 25-22. The Jags were down 20-18 when they put together six straight points, seven out of eight, to bury the Indians in Game 2. Game 3 was much of the same for Central. The Jags trailed 20-19, 21-20, 22-21 but scored the game’s final four points for the win and a 2-1 series lead. “I’m so proud of how our girl’s played tonight,†Comeaux said. “We never gave up. We mixed up our attacks, kept fighting on defense and we beat a very good team. My girls were resilient.†For the Indians, Comeaux said Kayla Prasnicki, Sami Jo Williams and setters Paige Miller Brandi Guidry had big nights. “There were so many points in the game win somebody different stepped up for us,†she said. “It was a great team effort tonight.†Williams led the Indians with 15 kills. Guidry had five digs, Stephanie Bowman had four blocks and Miller led the way with 29 assists on the night. Rock-A-Noos will be in action again Tuesday night when they travel to Dayton. In other volleyball action, the Lady Bulldogs of Nederland held off the Lady Broncos of Dayton for a 4-1 win on Friday night. The Dogs fell 32-30 in Game 1 but came back in the final three games 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 for the victory. The Lady Dogs improved to 14-11 overall and 2-4 in district play. Nederland was led by Kaitlyn Sneed who had 13 kills. Tayler Trojcak had 10 kills. Elizabeth Havard finished with eight kills and six points. Savanah Desmarais had nine kills, nine blocks and eight points. Kristi Brentlinger added six points and Holly Pryor led the Dogs with 20 assists.
  7. '57 NHS champions growl again By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- Bum's planning on coming, so this 50-year deal has to be pretty important. Fifty years later, the 1957 Class AAA state champion Nederland Bulldogs will convene once more. This time it will feel great just to enjoy each other's company. Yet the idea is to honor them again. Perhaps for the last time, but perhaps not. When Nederland faces Vidor in Friday night's District 22-4A football opener, the 2007 homecoming ceremony shares the spotlight with a legendary, historic piece of the Bulldogs' proud past. A 50-year reunion to honor the 14-0 state champs of coach Emmett McKenzie was an idea coordinated by former NHS bandsman Arthur Newman and NISD athletic coordinator and head football coach Larry Neumann. When Newman and Neumann finished their blueprint, they arranged a full agenda of weekend activities to recognize and honor the 1957 team. "It's a pretty special time in Nederland's history," Arthur Newman reflected on Friday. "That team put in a lot of hard work to do what they did. A lot of people who have moved to Nederland over the years know nothing about what this team accomplished." A fellow classmate of those 1958 NHS graduates, Newman approached the Bulldogs' coach last winter about the idea of honoring the '57 state champs during this season. Nederland's head football coach proved more than accommodating. This reporter gathered a number of team members at NHS 10 years ago for a story and picture in Dec. 1997. But one special architect of that 1957 squad could not be present. Wade's daddy, O.A. "Bum" Phillips, intends to participate in at least part of this year's activities. A dinner for the 1957 honorees will be held Thursday night in Nederland's First United Methodist Church Family Center with a social at 6 p.m., followed by a meal at 7 p.m. Each honoree and one guest will receive a complimentary dinner. The cost for any additional dinners will be $15. Former players and coaches also will be recognized on Friday morning at the homecoming pep rally in the Dogdome at 8 a.m. Phillips is not expected to arrive until Friday morning. He is scheduled to address Nederland's current players during a late morning team meeting. Then Bum will mix and mingle with former players at a noon luncheon at Sanderson's Restaurant. While homecoming festivities will start at 6:30 prior to Nederland's 7 o'clock kickoff against Vidor, the 1957 honorees will receive special recognition during this Friday night's halftime ceremonies. Cheerleaders from the 1957 team also will be on the field for that ceremony.
