So are the guys that aren't into it for "sport", just into it for the meat?

If so, why spend so much money on tackle, bait (live or artificial), gas to get to and from, maybe a boat, etc., and just go to the local market and buy fresh fish?  ;D

In truth we are all into it for sport but what we see as sporting or fun differs from person to person.

I fly fish and bow hunt as my preferred methods of taking game and fish. That won't stop my from using any and all legal methods but my preference is to make it feel like I am making it harder or taking more skill.

As an example, while shooting a deer at 300 yards with a rifle at a deer under a feeder might not be what some call "hunting", what is it called when you throw artificial lures into a school of fish that will hit practically anything and get a limit in 10 minutes? Is that really "fishing"?

High fence/low fence, artificial/live, close/far, land/boat or whatever. I say that if you like it and are enjoying the great outdoors, good deal.

My comments were actually aimed at the guys that criticize the natural bait users,  and not necessarily anyone on this board.    Some are very vocal about using live/dead bait,  and they feel that the only true sport of fishing is with arties only.  Yet those same guys hunt the way I described.  That's not "hunting",  it's just killing... and that's fine too.  They just shouldn't criticize other people's methods of doing what they love to do... catch fish.

::)  I chunk whatever puts fish in the boat!!!

Me too brutha!  Whatever puts the goods on the table.

I get a kick out of those guys that say they only trout fish with arties...  strictly because of the sport.  If it's for the sport,  why not mullet fish? Now THAT would be a real challenge!  Or maybe try trout fishing with something that DOESN'T look like a shrimp or fish!  Those guys crack me up.

Probably the same guys that feed deer all year long,  then in Nov., hide in a tree,  300 yards away with a $500 snipers rifle and pick them off when they come in for the food they've been trained to eat.  Then they call themselves good hunters???

OK....I'm off the soap box now.  :o

Fishing the South end of the lake Saturday....Which launch is the best to launch from in Texas?
I prefer the pleasure island marina.  No current to deal with.

..... or the Parks and Wildlife ramp on the south levee before you get to the marina. No current and even better protected from the wind.

    Where is that one at?

I hit the North end lake Wed.  Nothing happening.  Not even on the LA side.  Tide was way out and not moving...not good.

Really surprised that the bird action was non-existent.  Typically,  during this time of the year,  the birds are awesome.  Confusing.
Seriously considering a run to Big Lake next.  Never been there tho.

Have any of you been there?

The best coach PNG has ever had, Doug Ethridge, was the Head Coach AND O.C.  So, yes, it can be done.  But, when a coach is 100% sold on the spread, then he has to have a good QB EVERY year.  Now, can every head coach develop QB's every year?  No!  Or, can the HC ensure that he can have a top quality QB coach every year that can.
Sometimes you have to adjust your system to your personnel.  When some HC's are so embedded in their system they are unwilling to change.  I think this was PNG's problem this year.

Good post Smitty.  I see it as a system that Coach Faircloth KNOWS,  and that he probably wouldn't be effective with a system that he is unfamiliar with.  Just like Burnette trying the spread.  Didn't work for him.
I've heard from too many sources for it to be un-true,  that there were issues among the players this yr.,  and that alone will keep a team from playing as a team,  especially when you have no super stars.
Sometimes,  those type issues can't be coached.

I have 100% faith in BF and I certainly know that he loves those kids  and is teaching life lessons as well.  I like that.  And before a know-it-all says something like "Life lessons won't help him keep his job", ...  of course it won't.    We all know that.

I agree that the defense is a big concern,  and has been since BF got here.  With a decent defense this yr.,  we make the playoffs.

My hope is that they will complete the puzzle soon and all of you guys will have to worry about us again.

    Don't worry..................................it's coming.

Chased the birds a couple of afternoons last week.  Lots of birds but mostly undersized trout, sandtrout and an occasional redfish.
In my experience fishing under birds yields mostly smaller trout. I'm no professional, but that has been my experience.

Always hit or miss.  I generally find there to be a mix.  Slow your retrieve a bit.  The larger ones are often under the schoolies.
Some times I find all keepers in a school and sometimes none at all.
