  1. good list Jake94, but you forgot Ed Brady and Glen Turrow. Turrow won state in 3a in the late 80's.
  2. I would assume we are talking about coaching juniors here. So by that criteria, I would also assume that the coaches who produce the most champ and superchamps would be considered the top junior coach. I've been around the Beaumont tennis scene for 20 years or so, and for most of that time junior tennis has been terrible compare to the rest of the state. I know all the coaches in the area and all of them have produced a good player or 2 in that time, so they all are good coaches. If you want to look at sheer numbers of junior players, the only one who has a junior program is Tony. Ron, David, Russell, Jerry, etc. all are good coaches, but how many champs or supers do they currently coach. I know that some these guys don't teach many juniors, but that just proves my point.
  3. Man, looking at that list, I think this is going to be the deepest I have seen High School tennis around here in the last 15 years. All 9 guys mentioned on that list are Supers or Champs. I don't ever remeber that many qualified players in one particular year. Should make for some interesting tournaments this spring.
  4. Tbs, that is about how I would rank them too. I have not seen Legato play enough of the local guys to get a good read on him. I've seen him play a few times and he has a big game, but is inconsistent. Grant is definitely on the list somewhere too, but I need to see him play more to know where he fits. Instead of a 1-10 list, I would probably break it up into groups Group 1- Deaver- undisputed until someone beats him Group 2- Sagar, Bug, Lain - closer to group 3 than 1 Group 3- Scott,Boone,Clement - fix the holes in their game and they could be as good as anybody If I had to guess, I would say Grant in 2 and Legato in 3
  5. Now that is funny. When have you seen me brag about my playing ability or talk bad about your playing ability? If you made champ 18's then you were a decent junior player, therefore you should know that Clement being in champ 18's means he is at a similar level. I make no claims about being a superstar tennis player (I'm not) but I have been around the game for a long time. I've been involved at the junior, college, and pro level and I have a solid understanding of the game.
  6. I'm pretty sure I know a little bit more about tennis than you do. I've seen Scott and Bug play lots of point games and drills, and Bug probably wins more than half the time. Now having said that, there is not much difference between Bug,Scott,Boone,Wehner, and Tyler Word. I've seen all 5 of those guys play lots of times. Don't think Clement can't play just because he has different looking strokes. I don't know who you are athlete5, but if you are not a champ 18 level player, then I'm pretty sure Clement would beat u.
  7. I would have to say Bug is a little ahead of Scott. You guys are way underestimating Clement. He is right there with Boone and Scott. You are all forgetting about Grant Lopez and Lain Herr. I watched Lain whip the crap out of Scott this week.
  8. Now, I do think some of you guys are being a little tough on Tony and the Elite Tennis Academy kids. Tony is a good coach whether you guys like him or not. He coached easily the best male player from this area in the last 15 years. (Danos). And if you look up all the champ and super kids from the area, more of them are coached by Tony than any other area coach. Elite has the only consistent group with that level of players in the area. All of those kids are working hard, they just talk a little too much trash. Hey TBS, I'm bringing some of my Houston kids down next week ( mostly ZAT kids) and I was going to bring them to Brentwood for some matches one afternoon. I'll bring Scott, and you guys can play him. If you guys all beat him, I'll even help you talk trash about him. Good luck this weekend.
  9. I hate to take up for Scott, because I don't think he is all that good. ( my standards are pretty high though ) But, Scott has never lost a singles match to you, Bug, or Clement. He destroyed Clement the last time they played. He has only played you once, (freshmen year?) and he beat you. He has never played a real match against Bug, but he beat him in one of those grand prix things a year and a half ago. I've seen all 4 of you guys play quite a bit, and there really isn't much difference between any of you. Until you actually beat someone, you shouldn't talk.
  10. Ok aeropro, I hate to rain on your parade, but I did a little research. Top 2 seeds in TAPPS 6A state 1. Morgan Hopson #150 super 18 2. Ryan Crews #139 super 18 Uil State champs 5A- Colin Hoover #7 super 18 4A- Zach Nichols #5 super 18 3A- ?? 2A- Austin Klores #4 super 18 The TAPPS guys wouldn't have been seeded in the 4A REGIONAL tournament. So they would not even make the state tournament. * I looked up Deaver also, he is #163 in super 16
  11. I don't think 2A is quite as deep as 6A TAPPS, but it is close. 6A tapps is nowhere close to 4A UIL. My super 18 guy played the kid from Houston who won 6A TAPPS. My kid lost 6-4, 6-2. My kid lost in the 1st round of the 4A region III tournament to another super and Region III is by far the weakest region in 4A. Here is another example for you. The #4 seed in the 4A region was ranked #73 in the Super 16's. Matt Deaver is ranked in the 120's in Super 16's.
  12. Tapps is very strong at the top. It is the lack of depth and lack of a regional tournament that make it weaker than UIL. You can place 4th in your district and make it to state in Tapps. You guys dog on 2A tennis, but Austin Klores has won 2A singles 3 years in a row, and he is currently ranked #4 in Super 18s. I coach Matt Allen and Theo Case from Foster Highschool who qualified for state in 4A doubles, I also coach Carnley and Word. They played 3 times this year, and Carnley and Word won once. So, if they played well and got lucky Carnley and Word could have made state in 3A or 4A. They would have gotten smoked at state in 4A, but 3A was kinda down this year. The 2A and 3A boys doubles state finals were played side by side, and the 2A match was a better quality match. On that note, I will say that there were only 2 good teams in the 2A draw, everyone else was bad.
  13. Hey Bug, I can assure you that Zach coaches every Friday thru Sunday in Houston. He also does 6 weeklong summer camps in Houston. I can also assure you that all of his players only take lessons from him. He has multiple players that are USTA ranked, If you would like I can list all of them.
  14. Solid results from local players in the Zat and Superchamp tournaments this weekend. Cody Lutrell made the semi's in Super 14 in San Antonio ZAT results from Katy: Shanita Maceda Bridge City Semi's girls 16 Tyler Angelle Orangefield Semi's boys 16 Clement Wehner Kelly quarters boys 18 Scott Carnley Warren quarters boys 18 Lots of other area players played, but nobody else got to the quarters.
  15. I'm not dissing Carnley. I'm just telling the truth.
  16. hey vetgurl, let's just say I'm a guy that knows alot about tennis. I've seen Carnley and Word play more than you have, and I know they are nothing special. Being the best team in this area doesn't mean much. The only player in this area who is good on a statewide level is Aranda from Kirbyville. On the 2A level, the Warren guys are pretty good. They will qualify for state, and have a chance to win a match or 2. But until then, they haven't proven anything.
  17. East Chambers will dominate on the girls side. Warren takes boys doubles, with Buna and Warren #2 fighting for 2nd. East Chambers or Warren in boys singles. Should be close.
  18. It is in the Houston area, and they are going to play them again this weekend. Sadly, Carnley and Word can't beat any of Foster's top 3 doubles teams. They would play JV tennis if they wen't to school at Foster.
  19. Girls Salina Aranda SC18 #31 34-25 Jessica Phelps C18 #16 12-17 Regan Hollier C16 #194 1-5 Sarah Pfister C14 #41 10-11 Strong at the top, but not much depth. Aranda is probably the 2nd best girl to come out of the Golden Triangle in the last 10 years. I would put Tara Shelander at #1, but it is pretty close. On the guys side, Andrew Danos (top 30 SC18) by a landslide. Nobody else close.
  20. Ok, let's add some facts to the arguement using current USTA rankings. Guys Matt Deaver SC18 #126 13-13 record Grant Lopez SC14 #88 15-28 "Bug" Luttrell SC14 #114 7-8 Lain Herr SC14 #134 4-5 Brad Legato C18 #77 9-18 Matt Minick C18 #162 1-11 ouch! Sagar Desai C16 #93 8-3 Kenton Boone C16 #107 9-16 Honorable mention- Clement Wehner - needs 1 more point to be C18 Scott Carnley- former C16 who aged up recently Jude Layne- doesn't play usta Tyler Word- doesn't play usta Obviously Deaver is the best on the list. pretty tight bunch after that.
  21. You are forgetting "Bug" and Kenton from Kelly, and I think Grant Lopez (super 14) from Nederland will be a freshman. If Carnley would practice tennis as much as he talks about it on here, he might actually be a good tennis player, instead of just a mediocre one.
  22. Let's not get too carried away with Word and Carnley winning state. The should be a shoo-in to get there, and have a shot to win it all. They have yet to show that they can play good tennis in a pressure situation. Look what happended when they played Kenton and Clement last week. If they can prove that they can play under pressure, then I'll say they have a chance to win state.
