If you are going to be here he should at least offer you a frito pie. Last year at friendswood they had no concessions or drinks. I think dayton usually has some open.
I remember. I was there for that scrimmage last year also.
No concessions?! Those cheap Friendswood weasels! I'll be in Dayton eating a frito pie.
 2. Lufkin High School 85 I live in Friendswood and my kids go to Friendswood High School: Son -- class of 15 -- football, academics Daughter -- class of 16 -- basketball, track.
 3. Thanks Coach. I second them and hope your boys have an outstanding season.
 4.
Parents, great idea let your kid quit while the other kids bust their butts, and the kid that quits plays just baseball, golf, whatever then when football comes around the quitter gets to play again..... Bad idea unless they is severe punishment
I agree with you for the most part 12gage.  I'm not talking about a kid who plays multiple sports but doesnt quit football.  But if you quit football at any point you remove yourself from the team and from the preparation for the next season.  To let kids walk in and out of the program with no consequences would weaken it.  To use a cliche', football is the ultimate team sport and if the players and coaches dont know if they can count on a guy to sweat, hurt, and work all year the team concept is lost.
 5.

It sure sucks that non of the Beaumont school scrimmage in the area this year.  I need some sort of football fix.  8)
you can always come to Dayton and watch them scrimmage Friendswood.  ;)
I have a deep down hatred for Friendswood.  THAT may be the way to go.
Whaaaaaaat?  You hate Friendswood?  Cant imagine why.
 6. If not a senior let them come back, but they have to spend the year on JV.  If a senior something like 50 hundreds that have to be run after practice and must be completed before the first game of the season.  Till then practice, but no scrimmage time. Freshman should get to comeback for free.
 7. Cant wait for our scrimmage on Friday.  Looks like both Dayton and Friendswood will be looking to see if inexperienced O-lines can step up and breaking in a new QB. Here's my Friendswood breakdown again: QB -- Blumrick is talented but inexperienced backed by Sargeant who is the same. RB -- Longbotham is back tough runner with surprising speed.  Vandersypen built low to the ground doesnt go down easy.  Both got a lot of experience as sophs last year. WR/ TE -- Pretty solid.  Lost some starters, but our back ups got some good playing time last year.  Walker Williams at TE/ WR is tall, pretty tough and fast enough. O-line -- This is the big question mark.  None of the five started on the oline last year.  We moved Alexander from DT to center.  He is quick, really strong, and nasty.  The others saw time with JV or got a few snaps in varsity games.  Graduation and injuries thinned out an already thin group. Defense: DT/NG -- tough guys with good quickness and strength make us pretty tough up the middle. DE -- Langston started last year and I think was second team all district.  Robinson on the other side got a lot of snaps.  Both are quick. Robinson is big.  Also, sophomore Ty Shelby and Senior Kirkland.  Our dline should be one of our strengths. LB -- Dooley moved from DE to MLB.  Sean White was a sophomore starter last year.  There is a lot of competition for the other positions. C/S -- good experience at safety and decent speed at corner.  Friendswood has always been in danger of big plays because other teams skill guys are usually faster. See you in Bronco land next week.
 8. Sorry RaiderGirl, I gotta go GCM.  Would love to see you beat them because that would bode well for Friendswood in terms of where we finish in district.
 9. Here is a link to a youtube video with highlights of last years Fwood v. Santa Fe game. [Hidden Content] Our backups played the second half.
 10.
I doubt that anybody heard that. Nederland has a excellent coach in Neuman and I'm sure he does what he can to help his kids get college looks. The biggest problem high school coaches have is a lot of parents feel like their kids have college talent when they don't. Also to answer your question IMO coaches should do what they can to help the kids they coach further their football careers.
I agree with the above.  I also think that there is still a philisophical andtechnology gap involving some coaches approach to helping their kids get college rides.  Some old school coaches take the position that if you are good enough scouts will find you, so they dont feel like they have to do as much as some kids and parents expect. I think some coaches still struggle with the technology now available that they can use to help kids.  So, what my look like not helping could be more a matter of not knowing how easy the technology makes it.
 11. Santa Fe isnt usually good, but when they play Friendswood they get pretty fired up.  In the past our games with them have been very physical (not always in a good way).  Lots of Friendswood's opponents dislike us, but Santa Fe probably hates us the most. I think Vidor should beat Santa Fe easily.
 12.

LOL there was no cell phone... usually just a call or two on the land line to figure out where the kids of the neighborhood were at... usually in someones backyard creating the next game of hide and seek, or marbles, or chase, or figuring out whose house we were going to camp out in the backyard... aaahhh and the taste of that cool water from a Garden hose....  Of course now a days that is bad for you...
Don't forget catching crawfish in the ditch after a good rain. Getting little sticks and have pretend boat races by the curb on the street as the water was rushing down into the gutters... Whoevers stick got there first won... Riding your bike all day in the neighborhood with NO HANDS.. LOL Oh how I miss those days... ;)
You guys are choking me up.  There is no way most kids today would have the patience to sit for hours next to a ditch with a piece of bacon tied to a piece of string and a stick and weighted down with pebbles trying to catch a big ol' crawdad. Back to football, there is one heat difference today than from back in my day and that's the artificial turf.  Those black pellets under field turf absorb alot of heat and make the field itself a source of heat during practice.
 13. I got Vidor.  As a Friendswood guy, I cant pick Santa Fe.
 14.
Vidor has to be in field house at 6:30 am be on the field and ready 6:50 then they do their work out... get a 30 min break and do the 2nd one... I guess his theory is he works them in the morning as to not have them running around all day getting tired swimming and such before football practice... He gets them fresh and ready to go... My twins usually are in bed by 9pm the night before two adays LOL ... they wont even stay up late before a practice...
One of the blessings of two a days for us parents is tired kids who we dont have to remind about going to bed. Good luck to your boys and your team Coach.
 15. How does your team handle two-a-days? Fwood doesnt start practice till late in the afternoon and it ends well after dark.  Its not two separate practices so much as a practice, a uil mandated break, and then another practice.  It kind of surprised me, but the coach's point was that it reduces the heat and it puts the kids more on their school/game day schedule. Is this common?
 16. Rankings are worthless except as message board fodder. We are talking about high school kids.  They are going to miss tackles they should make, miss field goals that look easy, drop passes in the end zone, fumble for no reason, and overthrow their receivers every week. They are unpredictable and prone to physical and, especially, mental errors.
 17.
haha...you guys are really cracking me up. It's not about money! It doesn't matter how many coaches you have! It's not about facilities!  It's pure desire! Want to! Work ethic! This is not Rocky IV guys.. Kids today are not the same.  They need a reason to want to play.  A reason to want to go in the weight room. A reason to be a part of something.  If it doesn't matter...then let's keep a count of who wins state championships (in football), and where those schools come from.  Let's compare the money being spent on each school for athletics.  Bottom line..you don't dish out some change, you'll never get truly great coaches, you'll never have as many kids play, and those kids won't have as much reason to "feel a part of something".  I'm not saying that's ALWAYS the case.  But it is most of the time. By the way...the best athletes I've ever seen, played with, played against...were always on the lower end of the "work ethic" chart.  Most kids that work there butts off will never be as talented as the few who don't have to work at all.
Obviously, you are unhappy with the out come of last weeks games, but your generalizations are pretty weak. First, nobody said money, facilities, and coaching dont make any difference.  But, they dont make all the difference.  Work ethic, dedication, community support and a winning tradition are also important and often can help teams over come shortages in money, facilities, and coaching.  Its never all about one thing. Second, kids have changed, but teams dont win because their kids want to wear a cool uniform, play on a turf field, be on a jumbo-tron, or work out in a great weight room.  They win because they do the work regardless of the material things they have to work with. Third, if you look back at state champions from the past 10 years or so you will find a mix of rich and poor schools with state championships.  Fourth, do you have access to the amount of money each school spends on football each year.  If you dont then you are basing your statements on your perception of how much money each school has and spends. Finally, if the "best" athletes you have seen, played with, and against had a low work ethic then you havent spent much time around really great athletes.  I've known professional football, D1 college players, professional baseball, college baseball, and high school state champs in track, volleyball, and cross country and all of them combined talent with an above average, if not exceptional, work ethic.
 18.
What I want to know is how is the Robin Hood law being administered. I see WOS sending several million dollars a year to Bridge City and WOS barely being able to afford anything. Then I see schools up in North Texas building college size stadiums. I see Friendswood with their own tractor trailor rig just to haul band instruments. The state of Texas needs to look anew at public school funding. Someone mentioned Jumbotrons, that is just to bring in better crowds, remember at most schools the football program is the primary revenue for the entire schools sports program. I can see a Jumbotron as an investment. I know WOS used to host at least one round of playoff football every now and then. Would field turf and a Jumbotron put them in the mix to make revenue again? Debatable I think.
The Friendswood Band does have a semi that hauls their equipment, but no district money went to buy it.  The money for that and for most of the extra's that have been attributed to Friendswood programs is donated or collected from fundraisers.  No tax dollars are spent on those things because Friendswood ISD is one of the most cash strapped in the area.  People in Friendswood may have more money than the people in other communities, but the district struggles with budget issues every year because the tax base is completely residential. Friendswood students pay significant amounts of money to participate in Football, Band, etc. I tell people all the time -- in Friendswood the people have money but the school doesnt. The enrollment argument is sound -- but keep in mind that Friendswood is bigger than Texas City, but TC beat us handily this year.
 19. Congratulations to the Lady Mustangs JV on their 3rd Place finish and to the Freshman Lady Mustangs who finished first. Also Congrats the the Barber's Hill Freshman Lady Eagles on their second place finish. It was a well run tournament (delays are almost inevitable). The Barber's Hill staff was efficient and classy and the facilities were top notch.

I'm pretty sure grade check at the three weeks is a regain eligibility only. Also, grades cut off on Friday's and apply to the following week.  Unless there is some specific district policy in addition to UIL. 2. I think GCM can beat Terry, but they will need a great defensive performance. As I'm sure you know, Friendswood narrowly beat Terry early in the season, but Terry put up some big numbers and were a dropped two point conversion away from tying the game late. 3. GCM's defense held Friendswood to one of their lowest point totals of the season, so their Defense is capable of playing well.  Terry can score from anywhere, but makes mistakes if on the field too long.
In reguard to the grade issuse, the Terry people did not want to play after Thursday because of grades. I am not aware of thier grading calander. All districts are different. They won that coin toss and here we are.
The grade check I was referring too is a UIL grade check set by UIL.  Still pretty sure its a regain eligibility only.

 22.
Interesting article....although their definition of "Houston Area" is quite Liberal!!  Didn't realize Lufkin was in the Houston Area.  El Campo, Brenham yea, but Bay City is a good 2 hour drive.
Geographically, Lufkin shouldnt be included in the Houston area, but they do play in a district that includes Houston area teams like the Woodlands etc.  I'm guessing that's the reason.
 23. With all the mistakes Friendswood is making they are lucky they are facing an offensively depleted Lee.  I have a feeling Zellars would have helped the Ganders capitalize on some of the FWood micues
 24. There are so many nuances to how the coach of the team that is way ahead should coach through the end of the game that coaches are bound to make mistakes. For instance, if a team is ahead by four touchdowns in the second half and the second and third string have driven the ball down to the opponents 10 and its fourth down should the coach go for it and risk putting another 7 points on the losing team or kick a FG? In a blow out game that is clearly over by half time, the winning coach should give his starters the first series of the second half and let them play.  Then take them out and play the back ups the rest of the way. Throwing the ball when up by a lot in the 4th quarter is unsportsmanlike.  It can only be interpreted as an attempt to score and it doesnt help run the clock down.  If the winning team runs the ball with backups and scores the coach is done all he can do to avoid running up the score.
