  5. From the Baytown Sun: Rayburn 81, Sterling 75 (boys) Sterling was unable to make plays down the stretch in their season opener against Sam Rayburn in an 81-75 loss. The game was tied late in the fourth quarter but two key three pointers turned a four-point lead into a two-point deficit and Rayburn made the plays to take the win. “They made the plays down the stretch,†RSS head coach Mark Patton said. “We miscommunicated down the stretch and they made a wide open three. We want to get up and down and score but we don’t want to give up 80. We still have a lot of work to do.†Adrian Fontenot led the Rangers with 22 points and eight boards and Derrick Thompson had 17. Cartavious Kincade added 14 for Sterling. On the night RSS saw four players foul out. “We forced turnovers but we couldn’t convert, “ Patton said. “Rayburn played pretty good down the stretch. 6. BH boys hold off Nederland By Doyle Barlow Baytown Sun Published November 15, 2006 With several of their players missing because of football, the Barbers Hill basketball team doesn’t figure to be at its best for a while. But don’t try telling that to Nederland. Barbers Hill used a tenacious defense and 26 points from junior Brooks Ybarra to come away with a 51-41 victory over the Bulldogs in the season opener for both teams Tuesday night. Ybarra had 10 of his 26 in the fourth quarter, including six straight after Nederland had pulled to within 41-37 on a 3-pointer by Jordan Pitts with 5:28 left. But Ybarra, who had just scored on two baseline drives, buried a 3-pointer to push the lead to 44-37, and then moments later, he pulled down an offensive rebound, and hit an off-balance putback while drawing a foul. After making the free throw, BH led 47-39 with 2:28 left. “It’s nice having a go-to guy like that,†Barbers Hill coach Nathan Toon said. “Once we get Mason (Fisher) and Michael Davis back, we’ll have three of them. “But it was a good win to open the season and I’m proud of the way we scrapped.†Nederland came out gunning from behind the arc, as the Bulldogs hit two early treys on their way to building a 10-4 lead. But the Eagles began to chip into the lead, and when Ian Hamlin converted a conventional three-point play, BH was within 15-13. Moments later, Ybarra hit his first of three treys on the night to give BH its first lead. Nederland rallied to tie the game at 19-19 on a putback by Evan Fitch, but Josh Kuritz scored for a 21-19 lead, and then with no time showing on the clock Kuritz was fouled. He hit one of two to put BH up 22-19 at the end of the first quarter, and from that point, the Eagles never trailed. Barbers Hill shot just 37 percent from the field on the night, compared to 39 percent for Nederland. But the Eagles had a big edge in the turnover battle, committing only six on the night to 17 for the Bulldogs. “We missed a lot of shots that we’d normally make,†Toon said. “But we took care of the ball and played good defense. We knew they were going to take a lot of 3’s, and if we’d got out there on those three they made in the first quarter, things would have been even better.†In addition to Ybarra, Matt Gilbert had eight points for the Eagles and Jon Daniels added 7. Kuritz had 4 and Hamlin and Micah Moore had 3 each, Nederland (0-1) was paced by Micah Van Schonbeck and Micah Torres with 9 apiece. Barbers Hill will return to action Friday at 4:30 p.m. at home against Anahuac.
  7. Barbers Hill 89, Dayton 23 (girls) Dayton — It’s just a couple of games into the basketball season and the Barbers Hill Lady Eagles look to be in midseason form. Just ask the Dayton Broncos what they think, as they got to see a firsthand look at Barbers Hill Tuesday night as the Lady Eagles coasted to an 89-23 victory. Barbers Hill started hot and remained on fire the entire night with a good inside-outside game. The Lady Broncos started out by grabbing a quick 4-0 lead after a Kaleigh Landry bucket just a minute into the game. The Lady Eagles would then go on an incredible 39-0 run to take a 39-4 lead with 6:20 left in the second quarter. Samantha Hardin started out hot by scoring nine of the first 11 Eagle points. Hardin scored 13 in the first quarter and forced Dayton to spend a time-out after hitting a 3-pointer. After one quarter of play Barbers Hill lead 30-4. Candace Lewis then hit a trey to make it 39-4 before the Lady Broncos would end the run on a Jessica Gonzales bucket. Once the first half was completed the Lady Eagles had a 54-14 lead with Hardin getting 15 of her game-high 17 points in the half. The third quarter saw Barbers Hill outscore Dayton 16-8 to take a 70-22 fourth quarter lead. The Lady Eagles only allowed Dayton a single point in the fourth quarter to bring home the victory . Besides Hardin’s 17 points, Barbers Hill had four other players in double figures. Lewis and Kelly Rivera finished with 16 points apiece while teammates Paris Carter and Shannon Mudd added 11 and 10 points respectively. “We had all but one player score tonight,†BH assistant coach Hannah Wells said. “It was really a good team effort. Rivera and Lewis each played for the first time this year and both had 16 points. “We got to work on some defenses and work on our half court press breaker. Dayton has talent, we were just on tonight.†Dayton (1-4), was lead in scoring by Kristel Hill and Jessica Jackson with four points each.

  9. Crosby tops REL in Classic final By Doyle Barlow Baytown Sun Published November 12, 2006 BAYTOWN — The inaugural Lady Gander Tip-Off Classic is in the books, and about the only thing REL head coach Terry Gray will be able to find fault with is the ending. Gray’s Lady Ganders made it all the way to the finals of the tournament before their three-day ride came to an end at the hands of a veteran Crosby team. The Lady Cougars held REL to only two points in the first quarter and then coasted the rest of the way to a 51-30 victory. It was the second game of the day for Crosby (4-1), which defeated Port Arthur Memorial, 57-47 in the semifinals. REL (3-2) defeated Dayton on Friday evening in their semifinal matchup. “Our kids need to play together and build some chemistry,†Crosby coach Edwin Egans said. “This was a great tournament. To play this many games this early is only going to help, not hurt.†The championship game was a classic case of youth vs. experience. Crosby started four seniors, while the Lady Ganders started four sophomores. The difference was obvious early on. REL connected on only 1 of 8 field goal attempts in the first quarter, while committing eight turnovers and missing both of their free throw tries. “They were nervous,†Gray said. “It was the first game they had ever played in that meant something. They learned how to get to a championship game this week, now they have to learn what to do when they get in it.†In the second quarter, a layup by Crosby’s LaQuisha Walker pushed the Coogs lead to 25-2, with 4:38 left until halftime. It was at that point that the Lady Ganders finally came to life. After tallying only one field goal through the first 12:43 of the game, REL scored on their next six possessions to make the score 33-15 at intermission. “We’re up and down and that’s what you’re going to have with a young team,†Gray said. “The first quarter we were awful and we played better in the second. In the third quarter we didn’t play well and in the fourth we did.†Crosby’s Creshun White was the only player in double figures for either team with 12 points, eight after intermission. Bianca Johnson chipped in 9 and Ashley Branch 8. For REL, Katherine Henderson led the way with 8 points, with T.J. Hart and Damequia Montgomery scoring 7 each. “ We’re 3-2 at the end of the first week,†Gray said. “We’ll take that.†As for the tournament, Gray was pleased with how it went. “Overall, the tournament was very successful,†he said. “Several teams have already asked to come back and next year we’ll look to improve the field.â€
