  1. Sports Illustrated online article: DALLAS -- In a postgame celebration on the sidelines, Marcus Forston donned a cowboy hat, inciting a roar from the fans of Miami's Northwestern High School. The nation's second-ranked Bulls had messed with Texas, and Forston, the team's star defensive tackle, seemed ready to take home a trophy of the evening's conquest: a 29-21 victory over No. 1 Southlake (Texas) Carroll. In a rare meeting of the nation's top two high school teams, Northwestern came to Dallas, saw the football factory of Carroll High and conquered in the Saturday-night event billed by promoters as the "Clash of Champions," before a capacity crowd of 31,896 at Southern Methodist University's Ford Stadium and a nationally-televised audience on ESPNU. Both teams are defending champions in the largest divisions of football-crazed Florida and Texas, and the game became a matter of state pride. "You don't know a team from Florida," Forston, one of the team's five University of Miami recruits, said moments after the game. "You've never played them before. You don't put fuel on the fire." Forston was objecting to what he perceived to be an overstated confidence from Carroll fans and the local press. It was not entirely unfounded: The Dragons entered 80-1 in their last 81 games and, had they won, would have set a Texas big-school record with a 50-game winning streak. But Northwestern was coming off its own undefeated 15-win season, and for a year, at least, won bragging rights for the Sunshine State. "We're going to go back home and celebrate," said the Bulls' Jacory Harris, also a future Hurricane. "We did it for the state of Florida." This wasn't your father's high school football game, and not just because it was televised, had its own Web site, drew a sellout crowd to a college stadium, featured teams three states and one time zone apart and had former NFL stars Michael Irvin, Nate Newton and Deion Sanders on the sidelines. Neither team ran the ball exceptionally well -- Carroll's Texas-bound running back Tre Newton (Nate's son) had 39 yards on 13 carries and Northwestern gained 99 yards on 22 attempts from its platoon of Daquan Hargrett and Tyresse Jones -- and both featured no-huddle, pass-happy, four-receiver spread offenses with highly recruited quarterbacks working from the shotgun. There were more TV timeouts than there were huddles or snaps under center. With footballs flying through the warm Texas air, it was Harris who won the battle of the passers over North Texas-bound Riley Dodge. With the exception of a 75-yard touchdown pass on an out-and-up route to Tommy Streeter, Harris showed remarkable patience, eschewing the big plays the Bulls are used to making back in Florida for a chains-moving short passing game. The 6-foot-4 Harris finished 21 of 28 for 280 yards, four TDs and no interceptions. "We knew they had a good football team," said first-year Carroll coach Hal Wasson, whose predecessor, Todd Dodge (Riley's father), became head coach at North Texas. "They were very composed and did a good job. My hat's off to them." The official game program boasted the Dragons routinely compile "Video Game Numbers" -- complete with a Tecmo Super Bowl screen grab -- though they fell a little short of that. Dodge turned in a fine performance with 22-of-31 passing for 260 yards, two TDs and two interceptions; but as a team, Carroll turned the ball over five times. Backup quarterback Kyle Padron threw a pick in relief of Dodge, who was shaken up and left for a few plays in the third quarter, and Carroll lost two fumbles. Northwestern lost three fumbles, one of which Dragons linebacker Derek Tomlin returned 30 yards for a TD, but still came out plus-two in turnover differential -- a deciding factor in an otherwise evenly played matchup of similarly schemed teams. "For the most part we mirror each other in terms of offense," said Northwestern coach Billy Rolle, in year one of his second stint with the Bulls. "We kind of knew what they were going to do in terms of coverage." The similarities between the schools, however, end with football. And that point was accentuated all weekend. In addition to its cheerleaders, Carroll featured a formidable band size of about 200 -- "they look like an army," quipped one incredulous member of the media -- and a dance team of roughly 100 members; Northwestern's band, cheerleaders and dancers barely filled half their allotted section of seats. Considerable ink was expended in the press, too. The Bulls were greeted in their hotels, by D -- a Dallas-area glossy magazine with Dragons quarterback Dodge on the cover, highlighting a story that explains why the affluent Dallas-Fort Worth suburb Southlake is "Perfect City, USA" -- and by a front page story in the USA Today examining the discrepancies between the schools. According to the article, Carroll receives high academic ratings and has a student body that's 89 percent white, with just one percent of its students receiving free or reduced-price lunches; Northwestern, in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, gets an "F" rating from the state of Florida and is 93 percent black, with two-thirds of its students eligible for free or reduced lunch. "It was [out of place]. It had nothing to do with how we are," Harris said. "We both put on our clothes. We both put on shoes. We do the same things. We're both human beings, so why degrade us like that and put that stuff in the paper?" Added Streeter, an uncommitted Division I prospect and the game MVP with four receptions for 140 yards and three TDs: "It was a slap in the face. All the articles I read compared their community to our community, saying how their kids come to school in Mercedes Benzes and Hummers, while most of our school is on free and reduced lunch. I thought that wasn't appropriate before a big game like this. Football is football. In Dade County, we play hard every play." The persisting off-field legacy for Northwestern is a sex scandal with alleged cover-up last season, in which star running back Antwain Easterling, then 18, had consensual sex with a 14-year-old girl, leading to his arrest on a charge of lewd and lascivious battery on a minor (he has since entered a pretrial diversion program for first-time offenders that will clear his record), yet was allowed to play two days later in the state title game. He rushed for 157 yards and a TD in a 34-14 win. In the offseason, the Miami-Dade schools superintendent dismissed the entire football coaching staff, leaving Forston, Harris and two fellow Miami commitments, linebacker Sean Spence and receiver Aldarius Johnson, to lead practices for two weeks before Rolle and his assistants were hired. "Nobody ever go through the things that we've gone through, the adversity we face at our school," Harris said. "The Antwain Easterling situation -- even though that's in the past, they still bring that up every time they write an article about us. They got to begin it with 'Antwain Easterling had sex with a 14-year-old girl.'" The Bulls are more than ready to put that incident in the past. They know it'll take time but hope that a win like Saturday's begins to return conversations about Northwestern back to the normal high school topics of academics and athletics. "I don't think one win just does that," Rolle said. "It's a process. We've still got to teach the kids, coach the kids." Northwestern has a new coach and a new principal, who have pledged to make that happen, with more rigorous standards for athletes. "I hope this game gives us a brighter outlook," Streeter said. "Any time people think of Northwestern, they think of the Antwain Easterling scandal and things like that, giving people a negative look at the school. "Our school is a great school, and a lot of good comes from it."
  2. I think that is pretty much universal. Even Todd Dodge had to put up with a lot of crap.
  3. Just heard that BH146, who runs the Barbers Hill Sports Report, lost his dad a few days ago. BH146 is an old Bridge City boy. My prays are with you buddy.
  4. From the Baytown Sun: Barbers Hill had a slow start in their match against Nederland. Midway through the first game, the Eagles found themselves tied 15-15 before pulling ahead 25-17. The Hill then finished the match off with a 25-5, 25-11 win. “We got off to a slow start,†BH head coach John Leonard said. “It was about 15-15 then all of a sudden we looked really good. Megan Burnett played great; she got the ball to the right kids at the right time. I’m real hard to please but right now I’m pleased with the way we are playing.â€
  5. From the Baytown Sun Fans and coaches gather at Pigskin Preview By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published August 3, 2007 By the end of the Third Annual Pigskin Preview at the Cedar Bayou United Methodist Church, the coaches of Lee, Sterling and Barbers Hill could all agree on one thing — the brisket was outstanding. The preview, which was hosted by the Methodist Men, brought local football fans together to hear coaches go over the upcoming season. The proceeds from the preview are given to the Helping Hands Ministry. Barbers Hill head coach Don Price spoke first and outlined the differences from last year. In 2006, the Eagles boasted a senior class of 31 but will be inexperienced this season with two part-time starters returning on the offensive line and three starters returning on defense. “It will be a different year but a fun year,†Price said. “We will always have expectations.†The Eagles will suit up 165 from grades 9-12. Sterling head coach Herb Minyard explained how the Rangers expect to perform much better this season by paying attention to the details and eliminating mistakes following a 3-7 season. “I think we will be a better team this season,†Minyard said. “I hope as a coach we have a better record. We fumbled the ball away 29 times in 10 games last year.We have to pay attention to the details and that is why I think we will have a better team.†New offensive coordinator Scott Large was introduced to the crowd and echoed Minyard’s goal of taking care of the ball. “The number one thing will be to take care of the ball and not beat ourselves,†Large said. “We are going to work the kids and preach expectations.†The bright spot of the Ranger team last season was the defense, which ranked second in the district in total yardage allowed. Coordinator Chad Haynes will enter his second season at Sterling and stated his expectations for the team as a whole. “Coach Large will make my job easier,†Haynes said. “Last year we did not perform to our potential. This year we will. I don’t know how that will translate to wins on the field.†Lee head coach Dick Olin was the final speaker of the evening and spoke about the success that the Ganders enjoyed during 7-on-7 this summer and the expectations this season for the 2006 District 21-5A Co-Champions. “Dave Campbell’s is nice and good but it doesn’t mean anything,†Olin said. Olin addressed the job that Josh Jones did at quarterback this summer after transferring from Strake Jesuit. Returning quarterback Octavio Torres will back Jones up at quarterback and will see time at wide receiver. Olin also addressed the injury situation of returning wide receiver Michael Mahan who broke his jaw in 7-on-7. Mahan received a plate and is expected to return for the Kingwood game. Offensive coordinator Clint Riley went over the returning starters with special recognition given to returning running back Jarvis Moore. “He is a four-year starter who rushed for 1,500 yards last year,†Riley said. “I don’t know if anyone has done that since I have been here.†Defensive coordinator Mark Crooms also spoke about the returning starters from the defense and lined out where he expects the strength of the unit to be. “The defensive line will be the strongest part of the team,†Crooms said. “We will also be strong at safety with two returning starters. We have a lot of kids back and I think the North Shore game put us over the hill.â€
  6. Knights pick up win in Mid-July Classic By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published July 15, 2007 The Baytown Knights’ arrival may not have been timely but their hitting was. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning the Knights scored four runs with two outs to post a 7-4 win over the Big Timers. The game started an hour late due to a mix-up in scheduling. Baytown followed up with a 4 to 3 win over the Heat to finish the day 2-0 in pool play of the Triple Play Baseball Mid-July Classic at Herrington Field. The Knights will return to play at noon today when they face L.C. Post at Lee. The Classic, which started Friday night, is being played at North Shore, Channelview, Deer Park and Lee. The tournament will conclude today with the pool champions in 18U facing off at Deer Park and Lee at 2 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Deer Park. The Knights entered the third inning of the game against the Big Timers tied 1-1 but took control with two runs. With one out, Barbers Hill product Colby Townley doubled to left-center and advanced to third on a single. Josh Ezernack of Pearland fouled out deep enough to score Townley. An RBI single by Kyle Bates of Elkins gave the Knights a 3-1 lead. The Big Timers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game at three. Hunter Silva of Barbers Hill came on in relief in the bottom of the fourth inning and allowed a leadoff double that resulted in a run for the Big Timers to make the score 4-3. The top of the fourth inning proved to be decisive for Baytown as they exploded for four runs. BJ Hansen of Galveston Ball led off with a single and Derek Hulsey of Barbers Hill followed with another single to place runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt by Stephen Gerondale of Ball advanced the runners to second and third where it appeared they would be stranded after a pop-up to second base for the second out of the inning. The Big Timers took the bat out of Townley’s hands with an intentional walk to load the bases only to see Montalbano make them pay with a ground-rule double that scored two runs. Ezernack followed with a 2-run single that made the score 7-3. Ezernack had three RBI’s in the game. After Ezernack was thrown out on a stolen base attempt, Silva came back on and shut the Big Timers down. With one out, an error allowed a base runner but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat. Silva got the win in two innings of work giving up one earned run on one hit while striking out two.

  9. From the Barbers Hill Sports Report: Barbers Hill Sports: A Year in Class 4 AAAA As the 2006-2007 school year began, Barbers Hill was facing the fact that they were no longer the big kid on the block. The Eagles were now competing as one of the smallest school districts in the Class 4A division. But BH entered with little doubt or concern about competing at a higher level. For the past several year, all of the Barbers Hill programs chose to schedule larger schools when ever possible. So with the knowledge that The Hill has taken on larger schools successfully, the Eagles set out to get their share of District 21-4A titles. But who could have guessed the bounty collected in the first year of 4A competition. Perhaps this Eagle was a bird of different kind. Being of a coastal nature, maybe the BH mascot could be described as an Eagle Pirate species. This Eagle swooped down seizing almost all titles that could be garnered; letting only a doubloon or two slip through its claws. The amount of gold collected would make any true pirate envious of the copiousness of the plunder. Listed below are the team championships for the 2006-2007 sports year won by the athletes at Barbers Hill. Though not listed, the Eagles took many individual awards in events like cross country, tennis, golf and track. 10. All-Stars have a busy week By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published June 20, 2007 It has been a busy week for baseball all-stars from Lee, Sterling, Barbers Hill and Crosby. Monday afternoon in the Houston Area Baseball Coaches All-Star game Kyle Bieschke drew a starting assignment for the 5A Northeast All-Stars at Reckling Park on the campus of Rice University. Bieschke was 0-2 at the plate with a groundout and a line out as the Northeast fell to the Southwest 4-3. The Northeast rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game only to see the Southwest pull it out in the ninth. “It was fun just going out there and seeing all of the other players,†Bieschke said. “The stadium was nice and it was great playing at Reckling Park.†Today Colby Townley, Cameron Campbell and Derek Hulsey of Barbers Hill and Derrick Massey of Dayton will suit up for the HABCA North All-Stars when they take on the South in the 1A-4A All-Star Game. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Reckling Park. This past weekend, Townley, Chase Dempsay of Sterling and Trey Buck of Crosby suited up for South in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game in Round Rock. The south rallied from a 6-3 deficit to take a 7-6 win. Boogie Anagnostou of La Porte was the winning pitcher. Dempsay had an RBI double in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 3-2 and Townley reached on a triple and scored to tie the game 3-3. Buck reached base safely on a fielder’s choice in the game. All three participants garnered All-State attention by the THSBCA. Dempsay was named to the 5A All-State second team as an outfielder. Buck was named to the 4A all-state team as a shortstop and Townley was named to the 4A team as an outfielder. Ross Hales of Barbers Hill was named to the third team as a pitcher and Cameron Campbell was named second team all-state as a catcher. “It’s a great honor for those kids,†BH head coach Gil Stalbaum said. “It’s great for them and they deserve all the recognition they can get.†Hunter Cervenka was named to the H5AB All-Houston first team as a utility player. Chase Dempsay of Sterling and Michael Mahan of Lee were named to the third team as outfielders.
  11. BH trio end high school careers with win By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published June 21, 2007 Donning a darker shade of blue, three Barbers Hill teammates ended their high school career on a familiar note — as winners. Colby Townley, Cameron Campbell and Derek Hulsey helped lead the HABCA North All-Stars to a 5-0 win over the South All-Stars in the 4A-1A game Wednesday afternoon. Junior Kendall Thamm also represented Barbers Hill in the Junior All-Star game Wednesday night. “It was a good way to finish my high school career,†Campbell said. “I haven’t been practicing much and I was a little worn out after practicing twice and playing today.†Leading 2-0, the North broke the game wide open in the top of the eighth with three runs off of Chance Sievers of High Island. Paul Prestera led the inning off with a double bringing Townley to the plate. After Prestera advanced to third, Townley drew his second walk of the game. “I was fouling off the breaking stuff waiting for something to drive, but they never gave in to me,†Townley said. “But I did not give into them either. It was a little disappointing that I didn’t get to do something spectacular, but it was an honor just to play in this game.†Townley stole second base and a walk to Matt Johnson of Montgomery loaded the bases. Prestera scored on a wild pitch and Corey Wellbrock of Brenham hit an RBI single to score Townley bringing Hulsey to the plate. Hulsey hit into a fielder’s choice but was credited with an RBI as Johnson scored on the play that made the score 5-0. Hulsey started the day in vacationing in Garner but arrived in Houston and had a strong effort on the day going 1-2 at the plate. Hulsey also played well in the field with two assists. Before the game the North team drew numbers for the batting order and Hulsey came out as the last member of the North team to get an at-bat. With one on and no outs in the top of the fifth, Hulsey hit a chopper between third base and shortstop for a single. Justin Taylor of Waltrip then hit a sacrifice fly to score Wellbrock for the first run of the game. “I was pretty tired but it was worth coming to,†Hulsey said. “Getting to bat last was just my luck but I still got to bat twice. I was a little nervous the first time up but I just went up and do what I always do.†The North team added their second run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Campbell was 0-2 on the day but did advance a runner to second on a groundout. An RBI by Josh Cheney plated the second run of the game. In Wednesday night’s action, Kendall Thamm pitched the second and third inning for the Red Team in the Junior All-Star game. Thamm was roughed up for three runs in the second inning but came back strong.
