  2. BH fighting through the heat By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published August 10, 2006 MONT BELVIEU — As the heat picked up for what would be another searing day of practice, the Barbers Hill football team concluded their workout with the time-honored tradition of wind sprints. The Eagles completed their third day of preseason football Wednesday in preparation for the first season competing in Class 4A. The Eagles enter the season looking to fill holes on the offensive line as well as the secondary. And of course there is the quarterback position, where senior Blake Patton will take over the reins. Last season Patton was a receiver and running back on the offensive side of the ball. “Blake has done real well,†BH head coach Don Price said. “He is making some progress. We are a no-huddle system and not only does he call the plays but he calls protection. It’s not difficult, it is just getting it to become second nature.†With the move of Patton to quarterback, Barbers Hill will look for someone to take over his position at cornerback on defense where he was All-District last season. District 23-3A MVP Mason Fisher will also move primarily to offense, vacating his safety position. According to Price the athletes are available to fill in those spots but varsity experience is lacking. The offensive line will also be a focal point entering the 2006 campaign. Shelton Rainey, the only returning starter, suffered a broken ankle the week before two-a-days and will be out for eight to 10 weeks. “We miss his leadership as well as his ability,†Price said. “We have only had one dehydration problem,†Price said. “The kids have been through the conditioning program and are in good shape. It has only been in the last 15 to 20 minutes of practice that the heat has had an effect. “The effort has been good but until you get the pads on and you get into the scrimmages it is hard to tell how things are going. We are trying to put in everything that we do in the first five days of practice. Next week we will begin to refine it.â€
  3. Coaches enjoy ribbing at Pigskin Preview By Doyle Barlow Baytown Sun Published August 5, 2006 BAYTOWN — These guys sure put the “barb†in barbecue. Even though the coaching staffs from Sterling, Lee and Barbers Hill were at Cedar Bayou Methodist Church Friday night for the annual Pigskin Preview, they still managed to mix in some good-natured ribbing with all the football talk. Barbers Hill assistant coach Jamey Horn fired the first shot, as he explained why defensive coordinator Jackie Byrd was absent. “Most people don’t know this, but Jackie has a lucrative modeling career that takes him to New York and Los Angeles. And this is an example of some of his work,†Horn said, holding up a T-shirt with the picture of a face resembling a wrinkled prune who smoked in a tanning bed on it. Horn added the six defensive coaches at Barbers Hill had 165 combined years of experience, so that the T-shirt was actually adopted as the mascot for the entire staff. REL head coach Dick Olin also got in a couple of jabs. The first was at emcee Mike Finley, who introduced him. “Mike Finley says he’s known this guy for a few years but he can’t remember his first name,†said Olin, pointing at Barbers Hill offensive coordinator Bryan Price. “But he can remember our record (1-7) from a year ago.†Olin also ribbed assistant coach David Hackney. “We had our first meeting with Tom Ed (Gooden, Goose Creek, A.D.) today and he was talking about how you never really have anything to show for the meal money you spend,†Olin said. “Hack, stand up. You’re living proof of something to show for meal money.†Sterling offensive coordinator Craig Simmons had some fun talking about the youth of some of the Rangers’ assistants. “I told them I was 50 and one of them said that’s how old is dad is,†Simmons said. “Oh well, I know I look a lot better than Olin.†In between the barbs, the coaches also managed to talk some football. Barbers Hill offensive coordinator Bryan Price, who was subbing for head coach Don Price, was candid about the Eagles jump to Class 4A. “We’ve had a great deal of success in 3A and we recognize this will be a challenge,†Price said. “But we have 33 seniors — the most we’ve ever had — and we return to starters on defense and four on offense. “Our keys will be getting Blake (Patton) comfortable at quarterback and rebuilding our offensive line, but we’ve got some good prospects there.†Olin praised the addition of a fourth playoff team from each district. “It’s always good when you get more teams involved,†Olin said. “That means that each week there’s always something you’re playing for.†Sterling head coach Herb Minyard was candid as he talked about relinquishing the defensive coordinator duties and hiring Chad Haynes from Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla. to take over the defense. “I’ve always called defenses so I thought I was the best defensive coordinator there was,†Minyard said. “But when I interviewed Chad I asked him to show me the defenses we were going to run at Sterling High School. About 24 hours later we got through and he left for Oklahoma. I called him and offered him the job and he accepted somewhere north of Dallas.†Sterling outside linebacker coach Tim Lumpkin also had praise for Haynes. “He’s brought a lot of enthusiasm and energy and we’re excited,†Lumpkin said as he smiled and glanced toward Minyard. “Not that coach Minyard was a bad defensive coordinator…â€
  4. I thought Sexton was only a junior. I don't know what Fisher is going to do. From BH web site: Cox Named as One of Tx Top Linebackers Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine recently released their top 300 players for the up coming football season. Barbers Hill's Kyle Cox was listed as one of the top linebackers in the state. The magazine listed their top 20 linebackers, 15 from Class 5A schools and 5 from Class 4A schools. The magazine then listed their "Best of the rest" list in which Kyle was included.
  5. Good article. Patton's are a class act. Great kids.
  6. You have got to be kidding me. A poll on SETXsports? You might as well put up a poll on who is the better president (Bush or Clinton) in Hope, Arkansas.
  7. You can observe a lot just by watching. Yogi
  8. Yogi Berra: You've got to be careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there. Add your favorite Yogi quote.
  9. He does work hard to get his players a place to play. That in my opinion is above and beyond his duties. Hats (caps) off to Coach G.
  10. Buy or sell. WOS comes out of the BH scrimmage with no big injuries.
  11. HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TOUR Early playoff loss still burns First-round exit motivates Bellville toward fall success By JENNY DIAL Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Bellville players know how tough the luck of the draw can be. After winning eight straight games and going 5-0 in District 23-3A last season, the Brahmas drew Giddings in the first round of the playoffs. Bellville lost 49-35 and went home weeks sooner than expected. "It was a tough loss" Bellville coach Huey Chancellor said. "We got behind in the game and made a lot of little mistakes that set us back." Chancellor said the loss to Giddings will turn out to be a positive experience. "We have 16 starters from that team coming back, and they know what it's like to make an early exit now," Chancellor said. "They are very fired up for this season and ready to get back out there and play. This year, they want to go further." Loads of tradition Bellville and success are no no strangers. The Brahmas have won five straight district championships, going 24-1 in district play. "We lost to Navasota a couple of years ago" Chancellor said."Other than that game we have been very successful." With that comes pressure. "There is a lot to live up to" Chancellor said. "We'd like to continue with our streak of winning district." There are a few things standing in the way. A tough schedule matches Bellville with teams such as Giddings and Navasota. "No one is going to hand that over to us" Chancellor said. "We have some tough competition ahead of us." Enter two-year letterman and starting receiver/defensive back Brandon Harris, who was named district MVP on both sides of the ball last season. "Brandon is a great leader, and he motivates those around him" Chancellor said. "He's hungry. The whole team is. They want another district championship and they want to go further in the playoffs." Harris — along with returnees such as running back Clayton Chaney, quarterback Lane O'Connor and defensive back Allen Cooper — are expected to contribute on offense and defense. Two-way talents "We have a lot of players who will see time on both sides of the ball," Chancellor said. "We play whoever can get the job done." Right now, the challenge for Chancellor and his staff is to get the team to focus through two-a-days and practice. "This team is so ready to play right now" Chancellor said. "They want to be out there playing games, so we have to get them to put forth all that energy in upcoming training. Strong practices will make us better, and that is the way to get that district championship back." While Chancellor isn't looking too far into the future, he has thought briefly about how the Brahmas will lose 16 starters after this season. Birthright of Brahmas With Bellville's tradition, the coach isn't worried about future seasons. "Boys here grow up knowing that they want to grow up and be Brahmas," Chancellor said. "I want to enjoy this season with these seniors. and I look forward to the next generations that will come up after them."
  12. Crosby baseball coaches go on photo safari By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published July 21, 2006 Most of our knowledge about Africa is limited to what we see on National Geographic or CNN. But seeing images and hearing the news is often not a true indicator of what life is really like there and leaves us with the wrong perception. That was the case for Crosby head baseball coach Marcus and Michael Thompson, an assistant baseball coach for the Cougars. Earlier this summer, the Thompson brothers traveled with their mother, Vickie Johnson, to Africa for a weeklong vacation. During the week they spent on the continent, they had the opportunity to experience a culture that has withstood the test of time. They also saw things up close that are usually reserved for the safety of a zoo or prime time on the Animal Planet. “My mother has been seeing someone who is a guide in Africa three months out of the year and that got her interested in visiting,†Thompson said. “She called me one day and asked me I would like to go to Africa. I thought she was joking but she made it known she was going and would like for my brother, my wife Emily, and me to go. “I discussed it with my wife but she wasn’t having any of that.†The flight to Africa took 18 hours as the trio departed from Atlanta and flew into Johannesburg, South Africa. From Johannesburg, the trio boarded a prop flight that transported them to Kruger Park near Hoedsprait. Then the group traveled to the Umlamie bush camp that was to be their home for the next three days. “The airport we landed at in Hoedsprait could have fit into the Baytown Sun, “Thompson said. “Flying in we saw a herd of giraffes and packs of baboons and warthogs. Once we got into camp we went out on safari where we saw a rhino. “The selling point of tourism in Africa is what they call the “big five†which are rhinos, elephants, lions, leopards and cape buffalos. We saw all five within two days.†The camp that Thompson stayed in was primitive, as there were no fences or electricity, a fact that the travel agent never bothered to mention. The huts were made of bamboo, with thatch roofs made of elephant grass. On the first night, the long flight from the states combined with a safari, sapped Thompson, as he fell asleep rather than eat dinner. A noise woke him up at 2 a.m., which turned out to be a cape buffalo. Thompson turned around to go to sleep only to discover a 6-inch spider five feet away from him inside of his mosquito net. It was also not unusual for the hyenas and other wildlife to wander the grounds during the middle of the night, which resulted in a couple of sleepless nights. During the stay at the bush camp the group spent a day at the Songwe Village. At the village, Thompson had the opportunity to experience the daily life and rituals of the people that lived there. “There were black pots around the village in which they prepared the food,†Thompson said. “Most of the food was much like American fare although it was prepared different. In one pot there were caterpillars and I ate a couple of those.†Following dinner everyone gathered together for tribal dances and songs. There was also a game of charades that was played to the beating of the drums. “It was like you would imagine,†Thompson said. “It was almost like clearing the dance floor in a club. We sang the songs that they were singing although we were pretty much humming in the background.†During charades, Thompson acted like he was shooting something with a machine gun. There was also a talent show in which Michael made a toothpick levitate. The village chef was so impressed that he learned the trick with the idea of going into town the next day to make money on it, but not until Michael made him promise to call it the Texas Toothpick. While in the bush camp, the group had an opportunity to walk among a pride of lions. The lions had interacted with humans in the past but they were not tame. The group watched a safety video before they went into the pride. Lions stalk their prey from behind and the group was told that if a guard gave a warning, the person was supposed to turn around and acknowledge the lion with eye contact. “I was last in line and mom was in front of me,†Thompson said. “All of a sudden mom said ‘Whatever you do, don’t move.’ I thought a bug was on me or something. The guard said ‘Watch out, watch out.’ I turned around and there was a lion five feet in back of me. As soon as I turned around it went on its own way.†Following the stay in the bush camp it was on to Livingstone, Zambia for four days. The living conditions were much different as they stayed in a five-star hotel. “I went from the most remote place that I have ever stayed to the nicest place that I have stayed at,†Thompson said. “It was wintertime in Africa which is like the late fall here. It was nice during the day but it got nippy in the evening. We visited Victoria Falls, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The guide told us that over two million gallons per second go over the falls.†For Thompson the trip was more than seeing exotic scenes and animals. It was an opportunity to learn about people and the differences in cultures. What Thompson saw and learned had an impact and left him with some deep impressions. “We never got hounded for anything by the people,†Thompson said. “They were gracious and warm. I went into a village with children from infancy to adolescence orphaned due to HIV. They lived in mud huts and worked from sunup to sundown. It really humbled me and made me appreciate what we have in America. It also made me realize that sometimes our attitude here is ‘what have you for me lately?’ The kids were happy for their health. The value of their appreciation was overwhelming. It was disappointing that it reminded me of what kids here take for granted.†While in the village, Thompson also learned about how the village governs itself. The punishment system had an effect on him as well. “When there was a disagreement or a problem the people would hold court under a tree where the 84-year old queen of the village would hear the problem and make a judgment. Thompson said. “One of the punishments was a person would be given a teacup and walk a mile to a pond where they got their water for drinking. They would walk back with the cup filled with water and pour it into two 50-gallon barrels in front of the queen’s hut. They did that until the barrels were full. I asked them how often that happened — which wasn’t that often. It was a reminder of good old-fashioned accountability for actions.â€

  14. BH's baseball field is nice (suppose to get some additional work this summer). BH football field would be great if the visitors side was bigger. BH basketball building is getting a ton of money from the last bond issue--it should be the best HS gym around when finished. BH tennis courts are top of the line.

  16. I quote others only in order the better to express myself.
  17. It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err. Mohandas K. Gandhi Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. Albert Einstein Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity Martin Luther King, Jr.
  18. Super Gold: Baseball The Enterprise 06/23/2006 Kevin Angelle stepped off the mound and walked over to first base, not knowing if he'd get the chance to win a gold medal. The Bridge City standout had thrown five-plus innings in the Class 3A state semifinals against Texarkana Liberty-Eylau on June 7, but his pitch count had climbed to 102, and his left arm was close to finished - so, like he'd done all year, Angelle put his trust in his teammates. Liberty-Eylau outlasted the Cardinals, who had to settle for bronze. It was, however, the second straight trip to the state tourney for Bridge City, which hadn't been there since winning it all in 1992. Angelle, a senior left-hander who finished with a 12-1 record and a 1.77 earned run average, still has plenty to look forward to. He had signed to play at Texas A&M, where he would have been a teammate with another Super Gold team member, LC-M pitcher/outfielder Clayton Ehlert. But when Angelle thought he might go higher in the Major League Baseball amateur draft, he started to re-think his future. He could go pro if the selection (and signing bonus) were high enough. If he didn't, he could go to a junior college and be eligible for the draft again next year. Otherwise, if he went to a Division I school like A&M, he'd have to wait until after his 21st birthday. In the end, Angelle latched on with San Jacinto Junior College, and the Texas Rangers selected Angelle in the 13th round. 1. The season's over, you've been drafted and you have the chance to go to San Jacinto. Do you know what you're going to do yet? "Right now I'm going to go to San Jacinto. It's going to be a draft-and-follow thing. Basically (the Rangers) have the rights to me up until one week before next year's draft. So that's what I'm going to try to do. I heard that if any money gets freed up, that they'll give me the money that I need to skip college. 2. What was the best moment of the season for you? "Probably beating Cameron Yoe to go to the state tournament. All we needed to do was win one more. We came out and scored early in the first inning. Then they came back and scored two in the bottom half. After that, our pitchers - Broc Haymon and Phillip Meeks- shut 'em down. Our catcher, Casey Jackson - he's a sophomore - had a huge hit; he got a three-run double with two outs. We tacked on two more runs. "Meeks came in and got the last two outs of the sixth. They ended up scoring a run, and they loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. I remembered they fouled out for the next out, and Phillip struck out the last guy on a full count. ... We didn't do a dog pile. It was kind of all business." 3. If there was one thing about this last year you had to do again, what would it be and why? "Oh, wow. Probably the state semifinal game. I'd like to have that one back. I didn't really have control of my pitches. All I could really throw was my fastball. Every once in a while I could throw the curve. But I'd like to have that game back. ... It was a surprise to me. It seemed like everything was working in the bullpen (before the game)." 4. Obviously, quite a few scouts have already written reports about you. If you were writing a scouting report about yourself, what would it say? "They've said I was 'a baby Andy Pettitte' - a tall left-hander who's got a pretty live fastball and a good curveball. They say I'm 'projectable,' as far as what I might be able to do in the future." 5. Who was your toughest opponent this year and why? "I'd have to say it was Nederland. Those guys were pretty good. We wound up beating them 4-1, but they had a bunch of good hitters. They were hitting it hard, but they were hitting it right at people." 6. If you could be a cartoon superhero, who would it be and why? "Superman. Everybody knows the deal about Superman. He's invincible. I mean, except for the kryptonite thing."
