  1. Eagles undefeated entering hiatus By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published September 21, 2006 MONT BELVIEU — Surprise, surprise. Despite entering the season with some question marks, the Barbers Hill Eagles are 3-0 this football season and coming off of an impressive 24-13 win over Bellville. Add to that the fact that head coach Don Price was just named the Houston Texans Coach of the Week and everything is rosy for the Eagles. There are injury issues however which means that having this week off could not have come at a better time. With four players limited to no contact this week and a couple of others nursing lingering injuries, the Eagles will be more than happy to take an extra week to prepare for the “second season,†the District 21-4A schedule. “We have a young man (Blake Patton) that had never played quarterback in his life,†Price said. “We have taken a rebuilt secondary and offensive line where we lost our only returning starter to a preseason injury and we are 3-0. I’m not saying we have beat Southlake Carroll. We are pleased but by no stretch of the imagination are we where we need to be. We’ve got to improve every day and every week.†Price credits turnover ratio and discipline in the area of penalties to the team’s undefeated start. The offense has only turned the ball over one time this year and has seen their total of penalties drop in all three games. “Physical ability and who you match up with is undetermined,†Price said. “The things that we can control is what we are working on. “We have had better execution on offense and defense and we are pleased with the turnover ratio.†Other contributing factors to the Eagles success has been solidifying both the offensive line and the secondary. The coaching staff has settled on five guys on the offensive line as senior Cameron Furlong has laid claim to the center position after getting the start in the Bellville game. Jake Ponder has moved into Furlong’s right guard spot to complete the starting five. Josh Griggs, Micah Jones and Daniel Green have given the Eagles depth at the position that is expected to get better as Shelton Rainey could be back in the lineup by the middle of the season. Last year, Rainey was second team all-district at tackle. “He has been lifting weights every day although he has been unable to run,†Price said. “He is smart and will be able to fit right in.†Blake Patton has began to fit in well at quarterback coming off of a performance where he threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns. The running game has been limited early in the season, but with defenses concentrating on the running game, the passing game has been equal to the challenge. “People loading up in the box, combined with what people are giving us and inexperience in the offensive line,†Price said for the reasons for the slow start for the running game. “But Todd Patton has been a threat in the passing game as well.†Defensively the Eagles are a little beat up, as even defensive coordinator Jackie Byrd is recovering from surgery. Justin Lindley has stepped in at defensive end for Steven Vara, who suffered an injury a couple of weeks ago. Vara is expected to be back soon. Also out for the time being is Nick Mercantel who has seen significant time at linebacker. “The defensive line has been solid up front,†Price said. “We have played fairly good defense this year. We have not given up the big play.†Barbers Hill has shored up the secondary by sending in Mason Fisher, Todd Patton and Nick Coggin periodically to join Tyler Kitchen and Jonathan Delgado. Last week Fisher had two interceptions in limited action at safety. “We are trying to develop things which will make us successful during the season,†Price said. Barbers Hill will host Forest Brook Sept. 29 in their district opener. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  2. Tuesday, September 19 BH Defeats New Caney 18-1 in Team Tennis Barbers Hill moved to 3-0 in the District 21-4A team tennis race with a convincing 18-1 win over New Caney. Currently Barbers Hill and Galena Park are the only unbeaten teams. The Eagles will face off with Galena Park on Oct. 16. Next on the schedule Barbers Hill will travel to Smiley on Sept. 25 to continue district play.
  3. Barbers Hill NEW CANEY — Call it ‘serving’ up a victory. Barbers Hill took advantage of a strong serving night to sweep past New Caney, 25-13, 25-18, 25-14 to stay perfect in District 21-4A at 5-0. It was also the 20th victory of the season for the Eagles. “We had a good serving night and I thought we had the potential to do that,†BH coach John Leonard said. “Twenty-five of our 75 points came when they had a hard time getting the serve back across and gave us easy kill opportunities. Then we had another 7-10 aces you can add to that. “I was real happy with our serving.†Barbers Hill will host Galena Park Friday night in another district match.

  7. Barbers Hill It will be a battle of unbeatens in Mont Belvieu tonight, when the 2-0 Eagles host 2-0 Bellville in their first home game of the season. Barbers Hill is coming off a 26-7 win over Jasper. “We’ve got wins but we’ve still got a long way to go,†BH head coach Don Price said. “We’ve still got five or six slots on offense open and on defense, we’re still looking for help in the secondary.†Price expects a tough game from the Brahmas when they make the two-hour trek east. Bellville returns 17 starters off last year’s 9-2 district champion and have won their first two games handily. They defeated Sealy, 35-7, and West Columbia, 42-13. “They’re real solid all around,†Price said. “They’re senior-laden and they have a couple of kids who will play at the next level, and they have a real good kicker.†Price is happy he’s not having to go on the road, but as far as being happy about Bellville being a 3A team, he’s not buying into that. “I wish those ‘A’s meant something but they don’t,†Price said. “It’s the players on the field. “It will be nice not to have to travel.â€
  8. BH outlasts Crosby By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published September 13, 2006 The first course in what is to be a double dose of Barbers Hill and Crosby turned out to be quite a ride. The District 21-4A favorites went the distance Tuesday night with the Eagles taking the win at home, 25-14, 24-26, 25-15, 24-26, 15-7. The victory ended a two-game losing streak for Barbers Hill as they improved to 18-7, 3-0 on the year. The game also marked BH head coach John Leonard’s return to the sideline after missing five games last week due to illness. “We have been in these games before,†Leonard said. “We talked about it being a defining moment in the season for us and to me it was. We are the two best teams in the district. One loss wasn’t going to hurt us but you don’t want to lose at home. “It was a good job by Crosby. It could have gone either way in the fifth game.†Experience played a part in the crucial fifth game as the battle-tested Eagle team dominated. A mishit pulled the Lady Cougars to within two points at 7-5 but a four point run by Barbers Hill lifted the lead to 11-5 allowing the home team to pull away and finish off a savvy Crosby bunch. “We haven’t played a fifth game this year,†CHS head coach Stephanie Cone said. “We’ve never seen what we could do at the end of a match. We saw some good things and we saw some bad things. I’m just disappointed at some of the decisions on the court. You hate to lose but we lost to a good team.†Crosby entered the fifth game with momentum after coming back from a 24-22 deficit to score four straight points to take the win in game four. Crosby led late in the game 20-16 but a 5-0 run by Barbers Hill gave the Eagles a 21-20 lead. Cone called a timeout in the run as well as one with the Lady Cougars trailing 23-21 in an effort to rally the team. Following the last timeout Crosby scored five of the last six points in the game. Barbers Hill came out of the gate on fire easily winning the first game of the match by 11 points. The Eagles also had little problem winning the third game as well. In the first game Barbers Hill broke open an 6-6 deadlock with a 9-0 run. Keely Rivera had two kills and Courtney Johnson added an ace as they took the 15-6 lead. Crosby closed to within 19-14 on a Lacy Bates ace. The Eagles closed the game out from there scoring the last six points, three of which came on Brittany Connally kills. The second game proved to be much closer as the Lady Cougars took control midway through the match and held off a late Barbers Hill rally for the win. The Eagles took an early 9-4 lead and it appeared as if the Eagles were going to dominate the match. Brittany Hoag led the Lady Cougars back to tie the game at nine with three aces. A Lindsey Bates kill late in the match gave Crosby game point at 24-18 only to see the Eagles storm back to tie the game at 24. Lacy Bates had a block to give Crosby the lead back and a ball hit into the net gave the Lady Cougars the win. “We knew this wasn’t going to be easy,†Leonard said. “Stephanie is a good coach and they made some adjustments and we missed some serves. We made a run but it came to late.†The third game was much like the first in that Barbers Hill took control of the game midway to cruise to a win. “I don’t feel like we were intimidated,†Cone said. “We just didn’t have the experience. Other than this weekend this was the toughest team that we have faced this year.†Keely Rivera led Barbers Hill with 14 kills. Brittany Hoag led Crosby with 20 kills and four aces on the night. The loss dropped the Lady Cougars to 14-5 on the year and 2-1 in district.
  9. I know what you guys are saying. Did you see Payton Manning last night. He took for ever to call plays in their no huddle offense. I thought you were supposed to speed things up. What a dummy. Colts must need another QB. Our guys get signals--that is tough compared to Manning. He has a voice talking to him through his helmet and it still takes him forever to get the play run. Once agian--what a dummy.
  10. Barbers Hill Barbers Hill improved to 2-0 in their first season of team tennis with a 16-3 win over Liberty. The Eagle boys were the strength of the match, sweeping doubles and singles. Kyle Heard, the No. 1 singles player, defeated Matt Herndon 6-2, 6-3 and No. 2 Josh Maddox beat Lamar Bean 7-6, 5-7, 7-6. Tyler Richter also won a split set match over Marcus Davis 6-2, 1-6, 6-0. Landry Rice, Zeke Hernandez and Joseph Lovinggood all won in two sets. Kristin Chaumont encountered little difficulty in her No. 1 singles match taking a 6-2, 6-1 decision. Brittany Tobin rolled over Madison Moody 6-0, 6-0 and China Godfrey won her match 6-1, 6-3. Courtney Thomsen also claimed a win in singles for Barbers Hill. In boys doubles action Heard and Maddox won 6-3, 6-2 and Richter and Hernandez won 6-0, 5-7, 6-2. Lonider and Lovinggood won their match 6-1, 6-3. Chaumont and Tobin won their match in girls doubles by a convincing 6-0, 6-0 score. Simpson and Hall also won their match at No. 2 girls doubles 6-2, 6-0. McKnight and Tice completed the win with a 6-1, 6-0 win in mixed doubles.

  12. Tanner, Davis lead the way in win By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published September 8, 2006 PASADENA — With the bar having been raised on the Sterling football program there was plenty to be excited about, and enough to be disappointed about in their opener against South Houston Thursday night. The Rangers turned the ball over four times compared to two for the Trojans and struggled on third down defense and in areas of special teams. That being said, Sterling also had a chance to display their big-time threats and exhibited dominating defense at times as they defeated South Houston 30-14. Jason Tanner was 11-21 for 192 yards and one touchdown through the air and he ran for 68 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Manasah Davis was a threat on the ground and in the air, rushing for 53 yards, catching three passes for 70 yards and returning a kickoff for 88 yards and a score in the win. “It was the first ball game and we saw things that we wanted so see,†RSS head coach Herb Minyard said. “But we have to get off of the field on third down. I know we did not meet our goals in that area. “Offensively we caught and threw the ball well, not that I am satisified. But I would rather see an ugly win than a loss.†Sterling came out in the first half and looked more like their counterparts across town than they did the Rangers that fans have been used to seeing. RSS put the ball in the air 20 times and only rushed it five. The Rangers did pile up 238 yards, surpassing last year’s average in only one half. For the game Sterling accumulated 327 yards of total offense. Sterling came out playing aggressively on the defensive end, throwing South Houston for three straight losses on the initial drive of the game. Jairus Prout sacked Trojan quarterback Morlon Washington for a three-yard loss on the first play of the game and nailed running back Jessie Raglin for a 4-yard loss on the second play of the game. A pass netting negative three yards forced South Houston to punt. The Sterling offense put it into high gear right off the bat by driving the ball inside the 20. But a fumble by Tanner gave the ball over to South Houston. A fumble minutes later by Davis on a punt gave the Trojans the ball at the 19-yard line but a fumbled snap allowed Sterling to dodge a bullet and the offense went to work and found paydirt four plays later. The drive began with two incomplete passes but a swing pass from Tanner to Davis netted 44 yards down to the Trojan 23. On the next play Tanner tucked the ball and found space down the right sideline for a touchdown. The extra point by Brett Marshall made the score 7-0. Midway through the second quarter, Sterling added another touchdown when Tanner found Kodi Maxey (5 receptions for 83 yards) in the flat. A great block by Terrell Zeno gave Maxey the space he needed to rush down the field from 44 yards out to make it a 13-0 score that stood after a missed extra point. The South Houston offense finally got untracked allowing, the Trojans to score as the home team drove the ball 75 yards down the field. Sterling appeared to have the drive stopped after a sack but an unnecessary roughness penalty gave South Houston new life, which they cashed in moments later on an 8-yard pass from Keegan Savell to Chris Loveless over the middle. The extra point made the score 13-7. Sterling came back on the field and promptly gave the ball back to the Trojans as three straight incomplete passes by Jerrod Doucet took virtually no time off of the clock. But the defense held giving the Rangers the ball back and they took advantage by driving the length of the field to set up a 27-yard field goal by Marshall as time expired. The Rangers took the ball to open the second half and scored in less than two minutes with all four plays coming on the ground. Davis opened the drive with a 53-yard gain on an option. After Tanner gained two yards, Justin Armstead carried twice for 17 yards and a score. After South Houston scored to close the gap to 23-14, Davis took the ensuing kickoff and ran it back 88 yards to close out the scoring in the game. D’Andre Thompson did add an interception, the first of the year for Sterling. “We are going to continue to improve,†Minyard said. “The end result is this is the first part of the season of a three-part season. We have to continue to improve if we are going to reach the third part of the season which is the playoffs.†The Sterling defense held South Houston to 260 yards of total offense with 21 coming on the ground. The Rangers had one punt blocked and struggled all night in the punt return department.
  13. Jared Dolan played LB for the Eagles........ An early Bulls drive was thwarted when a Julmiste pass was tipped and intercepted by backup defensive end Bryant Mason. The Cowboys took a 7-0 lead when Jared Dolan recovered a fumbled punt snap in the end zone. "We had a full return on, but they had a bad snap and one of our safeties (Jamelle Juneau) did a good job disrupting (punter Ilia Petrov)," Dolan said. "I just jumped on it."
