Warren hires new basketball coach
whsalum replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Gotta feel for the young kids in the program. The program is made up entirely of Sophomores and Freshman who have some potential. When you're in a football district as tough as this one throwing your basketball program out with the dishwater isn't a real good idea. -
1. Warren 2.Hardin 3.EC 4.Buna 5.Anahuac 6.Kountze 7.Deweyville

I don't think he's serious, if he is he knows less about the game than anyone I know. The HJ staff makes more on the fly game adjustments than any staff around.I went to Jasper for several years to watch ballgames and Coach Davis turned that program around over night.Don't hate on the coaches because they have good players and the last time I checked it didn't matter what side the tracks you came from when it came to playing the game.

I have no ax to grind with the select squads but they have to make up their mind which is more important to them and pursue that sport to their fullest. It isn't fair to the school kids that make the sacrifice during 2 a days only to be displaced by girls who were off playing a select summer sport. The best solution would be for the folks over the ASA and the UIL to work something out over the scheduling conflicts where the kids could play both and not have a scheduling issue.
Good post Whsalum. The problem I see with select is, It has becomes an individual sport Instead of a team sport. Parents only care what their kid does instead of what the "Team" does. When select ball started is was a good thing but not any more. High school sports are still the purest form of team competition.
You must never have had a kid be part of a real select team? The team is where a lot of strong personal friendships are formed.
Quite the contrary. My son made some of his best friends playing select ball, I also made some really good friends but that wasn't the topic. He also had very close friends on his school team.If there would have ever been a conflict his allegiance would have been to his school team as I'm sure all of his select buddies would have also. -

The select games now resemble all star games with the focus on "look at me".It's a shame however for anyone to miss out on their high school sports. -

He may go to Lamar but I don't think there will be a scholarship involved. If so Lamars program isn't going in the direction they want to go.Devin was a good high school player who's strong points were around the basket. There isn't is a great big demand for 6'3" post players in the D1 world. Those size guys play the point in the D1 world.I wish Devin the best in the pursuit of his education, there is nothing wrong with being remembered as a good high school player.

You can't tell much of anything from summer league games.I was impressed with Evadale at Kountze this summer and they will be very well coached again this year.Big Sandy is just about impossible to beat at home so this could easily come down to a co championship and a seeding game.Should be fun to watch.

Warren hires new basketball coach

I'm afraid this is a football hire to coach the basketball team.I hope I'm wrong because I know there were some really good basketball coaches out there who interviewed for this position.I hope Coach Lewis does good things for the Warriors. -
How good will the Heat be?
whsalum replied to Let’sGetAlong's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
They will be in a battle to get out of the east. The Celtics will still be solid as a rock and they don't have an answer yet for the for the Superman down in Orlando. And if you make it outta the east they still have to find a way to beat the Lakers.I personally thought all the hoopla was way over the top.Lord their already dancing and puuting on specials and they haven't won anything yet. -
I should have looked at the bracket before I asked about Spurger and Woodville, that is a brutal draw.Stallworth will be the best player in the area next year.I know Lane was solid last year so he could easily be top 5.There are gonna be some teams solid this upcoming season that may surprise a few folks.

How many of the state champions would beat UConn women?

I haven't seen any of the boys teams play that WON state but I have seen a few of the ones that could have (Kountze, HJ, Silsbee, Bullard,Chapel Hill)...and I have seen the UConn women...IMO, no way the guys win. The argument that there is no comparison between athleticism between boys and girls may be true to an extent but, we have all seen much more athletic boys teams lose to other teams because they didn't match up skill wise. The guys may be bigger, faster, and stronger but those women can shoot, run the floor, and defend. Geno doesn't recruit egos either and this team has great chemistry! OConn takes at least 3 out of the 5.
You need to turn in your "CoachK" fan club badge ::) ::)
Better watch out BLUEDOVE3 I know this lady well and she knows a little about the game. Many years ago when we would get pick up games together she was always one of the first players picked. She won't take kindly to you taking her Coach K badge ;D ;D -
I heard they have already made the hire.I'll do a little checking and see if I can get a name for ya.I think he has coached both football and basketball for several years in north east Texas but that is strictly rumor.I know they had some very good people interview so hopefully they made a good hire.

Once again we're talking about the best womens college team ever versus 1 years state champions from Texas. This is not the best high school teams ever in the state of Texas just this years champs. You turn the shot clock off and give Gino the ball and he would take your lunch money. The Griner girl from Baylor could dunk the basketball at any time and she didn't exactly dominate the UConn club in the finals. These ladies were better than most are giving them credit for. -

It is an advantage to have better atheletes but you can see examples every year where teams with sound fundamentals beat more atheletic clubs.I believe this UCONN club was one of the best ,if not the best womens clubs to ever play the college game. You wouldn't see this women's team turning the ball over on every possession like some folks think. You cut the shot clock off and these games with the exception of Yates would be very interesting. -
Thats the great thing about high school sports, the players change but the established programs always retool. This year will be no different.Silsbee,HJ and Cleveland will be 3 of the top teams in the region but by seasons end the Tigers and Hawks will have some players filling the shoes of those who left.

No one will buck the system at WOS when it comes to the football program ;) ;)

Some folks underestimate the importance of fundamentals in todays game. We're not talking about an ordinary womens team here. This club hasn't lost a game in 2 years. We also aren't talking about a college mens team, we're talking about 1 group of state high school teams.I'll give Yates their props, they were the best in the nation.I wonder how many kids on the other 5 state champions signed to play college basketball??These games would be closer than you're giving them credit for. -

DC Stallworth will be my pre season pick to be the MVP. Sutherland will be the OPY. We will all get to go to Sam Houston again for a regional final to see which Hardin county club goes to Austin.dang, I'm ready to get this started.
As hard as it is for me to say this, but I think Cleveland finally breaks through this year and wins the regional championship.
They may be the most talented but they consistantly get beat on the bench.I don't see that changing. They are going to be extremely talented, no one can question that.

WO-S will hire this week
whsalum replied to HoopInsider_Cooper's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This will be fun to watch.Very good young coach but a brutal district and heavy losses to graduation will make a playoff spot tough to come by.Evadale and Buna both had good young coaches that were bringing those 2 programs around. -
1. Jordan 2.Bird/Magic (These 2 saved the pro game) 3.Kareem 4.Maravich (Give him a supporting cast he goes up the chart) 5.Oscar Robertson 6.Jerry West 7.Wilt Chamberlan 8.Julius Erving 9.Walt Frazier 10.Bill Russell Kobe will be on the list when he's thru but he is still moving up the list, he would be in the top 5 now.
