  1. Better not run Williams into the ground. the one time I saw Jasper over at the Butch I was praying he wasn't going to get hurt, stafford was just meh on defense and had no answer for him or Spikes. Hopefully they use that big TE more, that kid doesn't miss a meal. I can see Jasper going 10-0 if no major injuries happen.

I worry about overusing Williams, too. They have decent tailbacks coming back that are capable of big years, but no one is really proven since Spikes got a vast majority of the work. Jasper the overwhelming favorite again per the preseason power rankings in 10-4A. I'm not sure what these mean, but only WOS has a higher power ranking than Jasper's on the schedule.

    Jasper 39.9

    Cleveland  6.6

    Silsbee  14.1

    Bridge City  2.8

    Huffman  18.6

    LCM  12.6

    Splendora  -20.3

    Non-District

    WOS  42.6

    HJ   34.7

    Center 25.6

    Vidor  6.3

  2. I'm always hesitant to predict a win over WOS no matter how good we are, but both teams are returning 9 all-district starters and Jasper doesn't have Spikes this year. That along with WOS being at home for that game gives them a decent advantage unless someone else besides Williams comes out of the gate really strong for the Bulldogs against HJ and Vidor.

  3. I expect the Bulldogs to come out of the gate much quicker this year (1-3 last year on the way to a 9-4 finish) with a much stronger defense under new DC Gary Vanya. Tiger Williams and a good group of tailbacks will keep the offense strong this year as well. 9-1 can happen, but Jasper is known to cough up a game or two against teams that it should beat. What do you guys think?

  4. Like everybody that has Jasper ties, I have so many memories of the facilities there, whether it's the baseball park, the old gym at the junior high. or the Dawghouse. I hate that they're either already gone or on the way out, but it's time to move forward and I'm glad that they're finally getting it all done. It'll give the community something shiny and new to be proud of and hopefully generate more revenue so that the educators and coaches can be paid more in line with what they deserve. I hope to be able to come home sometime soon and check everything out. Go Dawgs!

  5. Bronson boys were tough!

Jasper had great coaches in those days that were there for a long time under Coach Walkoviak. Jasper was also a thriving town and had a strong administration before unfortunate events and the storm that ruined its perception. It's not the same place at all, but I hope that things within the athletic department will stabilize under Coach Barbay. He's done a fantastic job in the time he's been with the Bulldogs.

  6. Just about every kid with any kind of athleticism at all wanted to be a Bulldog football player and we were all outside 300+ days a year working toward that goal. If you were in that varsity locker room with the nice lockers and red carpet in the field house, you earned it.

  7. As a former Bulldog I can assure you there is not a Eugene Seale or Reggie Davis or Zack Bronson in the program.  They were 3 of the most incredible football players I have ever seen.

Or a Curtis Hafford, Willie Cade, Mike McFarland, Raefel Adams among many others. Those dudes were all grown men. Those teams could play with anybody in this era. They just lost to legendary Willowridge, WOS and Hebert teams back in the day. They routinely beat good 5A teams and were always among the top 10 in a very talented 4A back in those days. Walkoviak was a lot better coach than he gets credit for and had a great staff, too.

  8. Will they ever be as competitive like back in 2001-2004?

I think almost every Jasper 80's team was better than the teams you mentioned. They played a very similar style to both Newton and WOS, very physical and defense first. I have a healthy respect for those two programs and our best chance for long-term success is to mirror them like we used to.

I'm not trying to slight those early 2000's teams at all, especially the 2004 team, but those teams weren't built the same way and I don't think the style they played is sustainable. Coach Barbay seems to be working towards a more physical brand of football and he has a lot of kids coming back, so 2015 could be even better than last year.

  9. I think Pelini's probably right about Eichorst, but that's never a conversation that you have with impressionable young adults. The only person that should have heard those comments was Eichorst himself.

Riley is the right guy to lead the healing process and he's done a good job keeping the recruiting class together, but I'm a little uneasy about what will happen on the field until I see the coaching and results for myself.

  10. They just need to stop getting boat-raced in games against the upper tier of the SLC and start scheduling better outside the conference. It's good to get a money game every year that you know probably won't go well, but why not schedule a ULL or ULM instead of Texas College? Will they be phasing those games out?
