1. Scotties Hold On for Fifth Straight Victory Posted by jarnold 02/4/10 3:43pm Comments 0 Freshman guard Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) continued his dominant play with 27 points, leading the way for the Highland Community College men’s basketball team’s fifth straight victory, defeating Neosho County 68-65. Highland led for most of the first half and enjoyed a 36-31 halftime lead. In the second half, the Scotties pushed the lead to as many as 14 points but Neosho battled back to take a one point lead with three minutes to play. Highland managed to get the necessary defensive stops and knock down free throws to finish the Panthers off. The Scotties improved to 11-12 overall and 6-6 in the Jayhawk East. Gulley connected on 11 of 19 shots from the field while also grabbing five rebounds. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) contributed 17 points. Sophomore Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) was six of seven from the floor for 12 points. “We have needed a signature win against a top team in the conference and we finally got one,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We will have to continue to play well to have a chance against Coffeyville on the road. It (Coffeyville) is the toughest place to win in the Jayhawk East.” The Scotties next play on Saturday, February 6 at Coffeyville Community College. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.

3. JARVIS! Late Rally Gives Scottie Men Win Over Greyhounds Posted by cmosher 01/28/10 1:44pm Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team defeated the Fort Scott Greyhounds on Wednesday night in Allen Field House by the final of 73-65. The Scotties, trailing for most of the game, used an offensive surge with four minutes remaining to pull away for the win. The Scotties, 8-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play, were led by freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) with 22 points. Sophomore Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) continued his stellar play with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) added 17 points in the victory. “We have been good all year with battling back, but I did not have a very good feeling during this game that we could pull it off,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We‘ve had a lot of slippage in our defensive intensity and positioning, and it hurt us all night against Ft. Scott. We will have to play much better on Saturday to have any chance at a win.” The Scotties next travel to Labette Community College on Saturday, January 30 for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
4. Gus came back out in the second half with his leg all wrapped up and played well.  It's not often he shoots the three ball, but he hit three of them tonight, and we really needed them.  When he went down, I thought the game, and the season, had just gone down the drain.  Glad he trotted back on the court for the second hallf... Congratulations to WO-S for a great effort in the Hawk's nest.  That was a great game that could've gone either way.  #3 kept making long threes, and their big fella has a nice skill set.  The Mustangs are fairly big and very athletic, run the floor and crash the boards well, and seem to be well coached.  Most importantly, they played basketball.  I didn't see any trash-talking, chest-thumping, or cheap stuff on the court the entire game-- which was, I think, a first for this season, and refreshing.  Congrats to both teams on a great, hard-fought game.
5. Strong Second Half Gives Scotties Seventh Win Posted by jarnold 01/24/10 11:20pm Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team used a strong second half to put the reigning NJCAA Division II National Champion Johnson County away by the final of 72-67. The Scotties led throughout the first half but had to settle for a 28-28 tie at halftime. In the second half, Johnson County raced out to an early eight point lead but a Scottie press proved to be too much for the Cavaliers and Highland pulled away for the win. “We will never give a victory back, but there are some serious issues that have began to resurface, such as our free throw shooting,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We have a small break right now which couldn’t come at a better time. We need to rest and get healthy for this last month of the season.” The Scotties were led by freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) with 19 points. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) had 16 points. The Scotties sophomore big men both had strong outings. Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) had 14 points and 15 rebounds while Duane Durley (China, Tex) had 13 points. Highland is now 7-12 overall and 2-6 in Jayhawk East play. The Scotties next play at home on Wednesday, January 27 at 7 p.m. against Fort Scott C.C.
6. Coach Sutherland starts the starters every quarter to set the tone and work on chemistry.  How he subs after that depends on what he sees.  When he saw that alley, he immediately summoned the bomb squad and subbed all five starters out. That game was not much of a contest.  Started with a 31-3 first quarter, and the clock was running during some dead balls by the end of the first quarter.  Press was called off during second quarter.  Starters sat most of the game, thank goodness.  It's the kind of game where you just pray there won't be any injuries.  Coach doesn't cotton much to showboating.  The players were just trying to have some fun, but I bet they'll have to push towels next practice.  By the way, that was one of the prettiest, most perfectly-executed, alley-oops ever thrown off a backboard. Some encouraging signs: Jacoby and Phillip are starting to move a little better on the court, coming back from their injuries.  Trent Nobles played a great game last night, scoring after entry passes and offensive rebounds.  Lionel Stagg and Trent executed one nice backdoor-cut, give-and-go; when I see our subs make basketball plays like that, it gives me a feeling of well-being!
7. Just listened to a live webcast of the Highland Scotties beating defending national champs (and Jayhawk Conference foe) Johnson County CC, 72-67.  Gulley with 19, Jarvis 16, Durley 13, Donahoe 1 (?).  It was 28-28 at the half.  Scotties rallied from 11 down late to win it.  Good quality win at home for our Scotties.  Will post stats when they're available.
8. Dang, a two-point loss.  Donahoe's doing good (20 points off 10 shots, 3/4 3s, 7 assists, 4 TO, 4 steals), but Benard and Gulley are in a bit of a shooting slump. 9. Scottie Men Make History at the Jayhawk Shootout Posted by jarnold 01/11/10 12:04pm Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team made school history with an unprecedented two-game sweep at the annual Jayhawk Shootout. The Scotties defeated a talented Pratt Community College team 71-67 and survived a late rally to down Cloud County Community College 65-63. On Friday afternoon, the Scotties trailed the Pratt Beavers by 10 points at halftime but used solid second half play from freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) to mount a rally and hold on for the four point win. Gulley led all scorers with 25 points. Sophomores Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) and Duane Durley (China, Tex.) both had 11 points each, including a monster dunk by McRae at the final buzzer. McRae led all rebounders with 15 boards. Freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) had 10 points and seven assists. “This win is a testament to how much we have finally matured as a team,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “It has taken a long time, but we are beginning to understand how important it is to play an entire 40 minutes. This was a very good win for our program.” On Saturday morning, the Scotties took on a long-time rival, the Cloud County Thunderbirds. The Scotties enjoyed a small lead throughout most of the game, including a three point advantage at halftime. Late in the second half, a Cloud County rally gave the Thunderbirds a four point lead with just over a minute to play. Sophomore Thomas Shibeshi (Sugar Land, Tex.) connected on two free throws, and McRae scored on a strong post move to cut the lead to one point. With less than 20 seconds on the clock, the Scotties forced a late turnover that would prove to be disastrous for the Thunderbirds. Coming out of a timeout, McRae was fouled in the paint and connected on both free throws to give the Scotties a 64-63 advantage. He then took a charge with six seconds to play to end any chance for Cloud County. Donahoe hit one of two free throws to end scoring. “We really struggled to get any flow going on offense the entire game,” noted Cole. “Cloud is tough and defensive-minded and they make you work for every point. We beat a solid basketball team.” McRae led all scorers with 18 points. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) had 14 points while Durley and Donahoe both had 10 points each. The Scotties, 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the Eastern Division, host the Coffeyville Ravens on Wednesday, January 13th. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

14. I told Jarvis to get a good winter coat, boots, gloves, hat, the works...  I hope he did!  The forecast high up there Friday is -1º F; the low is forecast to be -18º F, and that ain't to mention the wind chill.
15. Yep, beating those Kountze Lions every time his Hawks have played them has watered down Coach Sutherland's record.
16.
Speaking of Donahoe...Where is Ryan these days? I asked Jonathan Greenwood but he had no clue....I know he and Richard Netherly went to some JC and I saw Netherly the other day. What is Ryan doing?
Why, thank you, swag. Check the Highland Scotties Updates thread in the College forum.  I try to keep it current with internet info on our locals.  To summarize, Donahoe (HJ) has been putting up solid numbers at the PG position; Jarvis (HJ) at the 2; Gulley (Central) at the 3; Durley (HJ) has been rebounding and blocking shots at the 5.  They are all starters.  If you go to  [Hidden Content], you can find a link to a live audio stream of their game tomorrow night-- assuming it isn't called off due to dangerously cold weather.
17. Silsbee 78, WB 65 is what I'm seeing in my crystal ball.
18.
Thanks for the broadcast this week.I had the flu and haven't gotten out of the lazy boy since Sunday.
Drink plenty of fluids, hit that Jello and chicken noodle soup, and get well soon whsalum.  Happy New Year to you and yours, and to AAW and his-- you guys are amazing basketball junkies!  May you always love the game!
19. "New Waverly showed up today it seems like they play up or down to the competition imo" True that, at least based on what we saw this tournament.  Watching them last night against Tarkington, I was thinking we'd mop the floor with them this morning.  Oops.
20. Sutherland's coaching had nothing to do with us missing so many point-blank layups that we only scored 16 first-half points.  That was a turnover and brick-fest.  I give New Waverly credit for much of that, too.  Man, it hurts to lose.  We just weren't firing on all cylinders this morning, and we lost.  It happens-- rarely.  If they're firing on all cylinders, Coach Sutherland's HJ team beats New Waverly just like every time they've ever played les dunk artistes de Kountze.
21. New Waverly was impressive.  They put five fairly athletic, smart players on the court at all times, and seem well-coached.  Gave us (HJ) fits.  Some of that was us playing unusually poorly, Jacoby playing hurt and Rico being out, the horrible refs, the usual litany of excuses...  But, as Phil Jackson said, "give them some [deleted] credit."  I think Kountze can beat them, but it won't be easy.
22. Thanks, Coach Sutherland, for sending us home happy so many nights.  Here's to the next 500 wins!
23.
Congrats to Coach Sutherland for his 500th win...500-98 as a coach
Has he done this in 16.5 seasons?  If so, that's 30.3 wins per season.  Not bad.
24. AAW, keep on going!  Here's to 100K!  BTW, my wife was out of town, and was able to hear you broadcast the HJ-EC game.  She said you did a better job of pbp & color than most of the TV broadcasting duos and trios doing NBA and NCAA games.  Keep up the good work!
25. Yes, you are correct.  Selective memory, or early Alzheimers, I'm not sure which-- but, for the life of me, I can't recall that game.  Must've been too painful to remember!  Of course, I remember beating them to get to Austin.
