  1. HOUSTON — Tenaha used big plays and a stubborn defense to beat Falls City 42-14 in Friday's Class A Division II semifinal game Friday night at the Berry Center.

The Tigers will take a 10-4 record into Thursday's state championship game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Falls City (10-3) dominated time of possession but had trouble converting its drives into scores and was held scoreless until late in the third quarter.

Teneha needed just two plays to go ahead 14-0 in the second quarter.

Up first was a 92-yard touchdown pass from quarterback J.R. Hill to Keontas Davis with 7:46 left in the first half.

Just more than five minutes later, the Tigers took possession at their own 18 after a Beavers' punt. They needed just one play to score on an 82-yard burst up the middle by Kobe Caraway.

Falls City was fortunate to be trailing by only two touchdowns at halftime as Teneha came up empty on three other possessions inside the Beavers' 20.

The second half was all about field position and who used it the best.

Falls City finally scored on a 3-yard run by Jon Swierc in the third quarter, completing an 11-play, 53-yard drive.

In the fourth period, the Beavers faltered twice on fourth down at their own 31, and Tenaha responded after both stops with touchdown drives.

A 43-yard pass from Cameron Soto to Dean Gaskamp in the fourth quarter was the only big play of the night for Falls City. It set up Soto's 1-yard scoring run with 8:40 left.

But the second score proved to be too little, too late for the Beavers, who managed just 280 total yards and committed three turnovers.

The Tigers did most of their damage on the ground, with Caraway, Hill and Chavis Gregory combining for 285 yards. Hill also threw for 186 yards and two scores.

Falls City gave the ball up on downs four times and punted twice.

Tenaha did not have to punt and turned the ball over on downs three times. The Tigers also had one turnover.

  3. Mt E has beaten Lovelady (40-7) and Maud (46-28) in the playoffs so far.

Tenaha had a 1st round bye and beat Overton (42-8) last weekend in the area round.

Evadale was one and done losing to Bremond 47-6.

This Friday night Mt E plays Frost in Teague, while Tenaha takes on Bremond in Crockett. Both games should be real "slobber knockers". I'm picking Tenaha and MT E to win their region and meet in the quarterfinals.
  4. Both Mt Enterprise and Tenaha will be hard to beat next year, especially Tenaha. They started a lot of freshmen this year and will lose little to graduation. They played one of the most brutal 1A-DII non conference schedules in the state, and hung with them all. These were all 1A-D1 top 10 teams. They had a lot of injuries during this period and have been on cruse control trying to get everyone healthy for a playoff run.
