HOUSTON YATES # 6 IN THE NATION
AggiesAreWe replied to CATMAN's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I didn't realize that folks were becoming fans of Yates just by stating that they are a very good team and predicting them to win state. I am not a fan of the New England Patriots but I will state they are the best in the NFL and will win the Super Bowl. BTW, I've never been to Boston. You can do better than that Dick. ;D -
Hey, what about favorite Setxsports basketball broadcaster? Hint Hint

HOUSTON YATES # 6 IN THE NATION

Yes I do agree with you for the most part. It seems that when a HISD team does win a state championship it's mostly from the fact that they had a overwhelming abundance of talent over their opponents. There have been a few exceptions. One that comes to mind was the '78 Wheatley team. The two teams they faced in the semis and finals were more talented, but Jackie Carr got the most out of that team and won. I do admit he was very lucky in the finals, but that game showed what poor coaching San Antonio Fox Tech had. I mean, you are up by 1 with 1 second on the clock. Your team is shooting 2 freethrows and Wheatley has no timeouts left. Why on earth do you put 2 of your players on the lane to rebound the miss if it happens? The Fox Tech player missed both freethrows and on the rebound of the second miss a Fox Tech player fouled a Wheatley player as the buzzer sounded. The Wheatley player went down to the other end and made both freethrows with no time on the clock to win 84-83. How stupid a coaching job is that? -

That '83 Yates team is the team I use as an example when there I am in a debate between talent and coaching. That team had arguably the most talent of any team in the state that year. Five D-1 players with two of them being pretty special, Ricky and Carl. They were beaten in the semis by a Ft. Worth Paschal team that was good, but couldn't come close to the talent Yates had. What Paschal had was great coaching. Paschal's tallest player was '6"3 and the rest were '6"0 or smaller. Yates started '6"2, '6"2, '6"5, '6"8,and '6"9 with Ricky being the '6"8 and playing alot at point. They should have killed that team. Paschal packed it in a zone, forced Yates to shoot from outside therefore exposing their weakness, they couldn't shoot. Also, Paschal pressed heavily showing that Yates really didn't have a true point guard on the team, creating many turnovers. It looked like the Yates coach just sat back and said " You guys are the talent, go win it". It was embarassing. -
That was a girls game, right? I agree, that really doesn't take precedent but I think schools already have a policy in hand.

WOS/Silsbee Game- Suspended..Discuss Here
AggiesAreWe replied to Lazeek's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I would guess a week or so probably. Are you saying it will be a week or more before we find out if and who will be suspended or you saying that players will be suspended for a week or more. I think 24 was asking when will we find out. -
Well, just another great game that I was fortunate enough to broadcast for our game of the week. I am living the dream!! ;D This game was won in the 2nd qtr. Ozen scoring 32, which is almost half the points they scored for the entire game, was the difference. Got to hand it to Nederland though, they made quite a comeback after being down by 15 at half, actually cut it to 1 with 30 seconds left in the 3rd. The Bulldogs played tough through the 4th but just couldn't get over the hump. They cut it to 4 with a minute left but got no closer as the Panthers made the clutch freethrows down the stretch. Both teams made the game a three fest as each team made more than their share of three's. In the end, it was Ozen's ability to pull Nederland out of that zone and create some penetration opportunities that got them some high percentage shots. Kudos to Coach Boutte and Coach English and all the players for a well played game by both teams. One side note, Willie Jefferson did not get his first points until there were 6 minutes left in the game. I have to wonder if he has been held scoreless for that long in any of their previous games. Again, thanks to NISD for allowing me to broadcast the game. I hope to be back again.

Mike, I appreciate what you guys do. I can't imagine what you guys have to go through on a weekly basis. You are right, you can't cover them all. I am realizing that myself with me doing the Game of the Week broadcasts for Setxsports. I am trying to spread the wealth as much as I can, but try to bring the most exciting and important games is the priority. I have gotten a few " why don't you broadcast our games ". Believe me, I do understand where you are coming from and mine is on a much smaller scale ( not for long, hopefully ). You guys keep up the good work, it is greatly appreciated. What you guys can't get, we here at Setxsports will pick up the slack. ;D
