  1. Good decision by the coach. Seeing the fact that soccer plays Tuesday and Friday, and baseball plays Tuesday and Friday, I can understand wholeheartedly why the coach would have a problem with a kid playing on his team that might, or might not, be there. Soccer ends well into baseball district. I wonder if the AD would have a problem if his starting QB were to miss about six out of ten football games because he had Friday night cross country meets? (if thats was when they were) The answer is, he would find a qb that will be at all 10 games. Just as your bb coach did.
  2. Stunner and Gusher All coaches want to win. The coach wants the most capable player in the game on every play. It is clear to me that the statement being made by the coach in this instance is, that he believes the starter is better "on empty" than the back up player is "on full". I would have to agree that this is normally the case.
  3. My take: LCM has not played in a game decided by less than three touchdowns since week one. This could be a factor in a close game. LCM has won three games this year. Two against teams that are 0 for the season and one against a team that turned it over 8 or 9 times. The bears may be a contender, I just think the jury is still out. The jury will be back with a verdict on Friday. They will either be living in the Penthouse or the Outhouse after this week. I personally hope it is the prior of the two. roc
  4. From what I could tell, the clock was run correctly. It is supposed to start when the official sets the ball following a first down and that is what it sounds like happened. Was it something else that happened? The clock was definately mishandled at the end of the first quarter.
  5. That must have been one heck of a runner for the coaches to add a new position to the all district team format to include him. I am certainly not opposed to change if it is warranted by circumstance. In this circumstance it sounds like the kid had garnered enough respect from the coaches of the opposing teams for them to feel the need to recognize him.
  6. That sounds like the voice of a unanimous first teamers dad. [if not mvp, i can't recall] The purpose of picking an all district team [or teams] is to recognize kids. Why not recognize as many as possible? What does it hurt to throw an extra kid or two a bone every now and then. Ya'll do like bones over there in bulldog land don't you.
  7. That could be an option. The way things work at all district picks is that if there is ever a tie between two deserving players, a leader among the coaches will step forward and make a motion to give it to them both. Most of the time it is mutually agreed upon to give it to both. There would be a danger in doing this though. This means the coach with two candidates would have to nominate both, possibly splitting the vote and neither of them getting MVP. Very risky and I don't think I would risk it personally.
  8. It has always been my opinion that the district MVP come from the district champion team. ESPECIALLY if no other team were able to beat that team in either round. I know some will debate that, but it is just what I have always thought. I never even put up a nominee if my team did not finish first. Some districts I coached in automatically gave coach of the year to the champion, but I never understood how they could think that way on one topic and then turn around and give district MVP to a kid on the third place team.
  9. This game will have a different atmosphere than the meaningless game played at the end of the 2005 season. That LCM team had already clinched a post season spot and playoff order had been determined. Baseball is a game of emotion and intensity. This week's matchup between the Bears and the Pirates will be the first in many years in which both teams are in the hunt. It should be a good one. GSlam is correct about one thing. No high school team is too good to lose. On the other hand he is wrong about his insinuation that the NY Yankees might be.
  10. I have seen both teams play and have nothing to say negative about either. I do want to say though, that I have walked out of a couple of games this year thinking that HF had possibly one of the best outfielders I had seen in decades. They have one kid that can go get it with the best of them. He is hands down the best I have seen this year.
  11. That's quite a price to pay to get your team fired up: 1) A trip to the states capital with your superintendant, your athletic director, and your principal. 2) A reprimand in the leaguer. 3) Probation and the pressure to have no more problems for the duration. I don't buy it that any coach gets tossed to get his team fired up.
  12. Did'nt WOS just throw their #1 seven innings Thursday and their #2 seven innings Friday?
  13. Scouts do not use this type of message board to look for prospects. You are misinformed on that topic. There are sites that are used daily by scouts. Moms, dads, and sons are answering the question, "Who can play in southeast texas"? If you read "all posts" by the "scouts" on this message board, it might point toward that the people that are aking this question are the same ones that I just told you are answering it. Although there are some very informed people that post here, no scout wants to hear from June, Ward, and even Wally, that the Beaver is a heck of a player. They will call the local coaches and come to the summer, fall and high school games.
  14. Part of the problem could be solved by having them play two of thier four games on Thursday. Then if thier team wins in basketball, onlt two teams will be short a game in the tounament and not three.
  15. I saw every guy mentioned on this list play many times except Richardson and Alvis. It is my opinion that possibly the best high school player ever in southeast Texas (out of all of them) was Brad Sullivan. I truly believe he could have taken Port Arthur Lincoln to the playoffs. He was a one man wrecking crew. He could beat you on the hill. He could beat you at SS. He could beat you at the plate.
  16. You guys missed my point. The writer of the prior post stated "they might as well of scrimmaged sabine pass". This was a derogatory remark to sabine pass. No one questioned that statement. I fired back with Silsbee because the author of that post's profile says he is a coach and his posts would lead you to believe he is a coach in silsbee. He should be careful what he says in reference to smaller schools. Smaller school kids work just as hard as the big school kids.
  17. My friend's son works for the Scouting Bureau. Through him I have learned that he certainly does not need 80 pitches every time out to get a good read on a prospect. From what I read it sounds as if some summer coaches may leave a guy in for he and other scouts to see while at the same time they are mumbling between themselves that they can't believe that guy is still out there for pitch number 95 in a summer game. A few years back if he wanted to see if a kid could throw 90 in the sixth he went to watch them play a high school game. Now days he usually does not have to wait for that season to roll around because they will many times still be in the game in the sixth in a summer league game. If the goal is exposure for these kids and not winning one of the 36 World Series Titles that are taking place in every state, why not throw 3 pitchers 2 innings and a closer in the 7th? They have then kept the pitch count down and got four guys exposure. They did however just throw pitchers 1, 3, 4, and a closer which means their best was not out there the entire game, thus leaving them vulnerable for a loss. This is something that most summer coaches are not inerested in risking because (once again I don't think it is about exposure and improvement) it is usually about winning to the adults. I do like the conversation here on this board. There are some very knowledgable baseball people on here. I think it is obvious where my view point of these topics originates from. It might not always be well received but these boards are for opinions. Mine will not always be the most popular I am sure. Over and out young fellas. We shall visit again another day.
  18. HS coaches (that remain HS coaches) do put a limit on pitches. They increase the pitch count limit as the season progresses. Approximate numbers I have witnessed over the years: 20-30 pitches in pens and squads October, November, December 30-35 pitches in pens and squads January 35-40 pitches in pens and scrimmages in February 50-65 pitches in early season outings (some go longer here) 80-90 pitches in midseason 100-120 pitches in district and post season Some kids can throw even more. The ones that will continue their career after high school will normally be held to under that 120 mark. (unless six or eight additional pitches can get those last two outs in the seventh) Numerous times in the golden triangle over the last five decades I have witnessed kids throw 160+ pitches in a high school game. None of the coaches of those players were 1) succesful 2) around very long. You will rarley see one go over 140 these days, but 110's, 120's, 130's is not unusual after arms in shape late in the season. Summer and fall coaches know that these kids are pushed hard during the school year, therefore they should also have a plan to keep these kids injury free the rest of the year. This plan in my opinion should be to only throw these kids during the offseason a few pitches each outing. It should be, in my opinion, just a workout with a pitch count.
  19. The "rat" is over use at an early age. At least five of the six (and soon to be six of the seven) local high school kids that have had TJ surgery had elbow trouble prior to entering the ninth grade. There were two others that did as well but made it through high school only to have the surgery after graduation. There should be a pitch limit in little league of about 50. The outcome of a little league game is irrelevant in the long run. There should be a pitch limit in select ball of about 75. The outcome of a selcet game is irrelevant in the long run. Except to the coach that gets a bonus if they win. The bonus provider is at fault as well. The first time a kid should start throw up around a hundred pitches should be about he time he gets his drivers license, and even then it should be limited to the school season and not year round. Summer and fall games should be a workout to develop the pitcher.
