Reading back over this thread as the new season starts. It appears to me someone needs to hold the Goose Creek AD accountable for letting his coaches collude to get awards when the results weren't there. No way Sterling should have shared in any of the MVP or Coaching awards getting blown out by BH twice. If the Sterling coach is the lead, is probably friends with the other Goose Creek coaches, not to mention I heard the new Crosby coach is a relative to the GCM Coach that is some major binds that can swing votes. And of course the one thing they have in common is they hate BH. The Nederland coach going over to PNG may actually hurt their players and allow Nederland to get more players in the running. I am sure the PA coach just does whatever or doesn't even vote.

Division 5A – District 17 Barbers Hill Barbers Hill from Mt. Belvieu were dominant in the district last season, finishing in first place with 13 wins and just one loss, and made a solid playoff run, stopping only in the regional quarterfinals. The Lady Eagles lost their two main scorers from last season, middle Avery Wilks and outside hitter Jacie Meredith, who graduated, but still have more than enough senior talent to be a force in the division again with setter Peyton Fadal calling the shots, middles Chloe Morgan and Asia Menard dominating the net, right site Peyton Spahn scoring points, pin hitters Malia Martinez and Aemilie Broussard getting the job done and libero Mia Rivers handling the backcourt duties. Crosby Crosby made it to the playoffs last season after they got fourth place in the district with a campaign of eight wins and six losses, but couldn’t get past the bi-district round. The team will certainly miss the absence of the graduating Ashley Anderson (setter), Victoria Grace (middle), Carli Brogan (libero) and Shyla White (outside hitter), but there’s still some interesting talent in the Lady Cougars roster, most notably with junior outside hitter Kate Valt , sophomore middle blocker/right side Kylie Green, senior setter Bell Land and senior middle blocker Emma Hattaway. Goose Creek Memorial Goose Creek Memorial from Baytown ended up missing the playoffs last season as their district campaign of six wins and eight losses was only good enough to get them in fifth place. Graduation has taken two key pieces from last year’s team in setter Rylee Buchanan and middle blocker Christian Stringer, but the Patriots still have one of the best players in the district in junior middle Sanaa Donaie , who recently committed to Louisiana State. Other key players for Goose Creek Memorial will be senior middle Shyla Houston, senior outside hitter Aracely Nunez and senior libero Carmen Cervantes. Lee With just two wins in 14 matches and a seventh-place finish last season, Baytown Lee will be looking to improve in 2023. The good news for the Lady Ganders is that outside of setter Kandace Waller, no other major contributors from their last campaign graduated. Two of the team’s standouts last season, junior middle blocker Christian Duncan and senior outside hitter Makenzy Moore will have the responsibility of leading Lee to a better season this time. Nederland Nederland battled at the top of the district last season, ranking third with 11 victories and just three defeats and handing Barbers Hills their only upset – their postseason run didn’t last long, though, ending in the bi-district round. The Lady Dogs will have a lot of work to do if they want to remain among the best after the team’s three All-District First-Team selections – setter Audrey Johnson, middle Ava Whitehead and libero Ava Wiltz – all graduated. Leading Nederland this season will be senior outside hitter Kamryn Smith, junior outside hitter Naysa Arnold, junior libero Uriah Buckley and junior middle blocker Ava Patrizi . Port Arthur Memorial After a winless campaign of 14 losses last season, Port Arthur Memorial can only go up this year. Some important seniors are no longer with the team, such as Ava Williams, Charnel Jones, Jariyah Botley and Lily Pham. Junior setter Amisti Ford, senior libero Dekarra Anderson, senior outside hitter Rayven Martin and junior middle Gin’Nyah Robertson should be a big part of the team in 2023. Port Neches-Groves Port Neches-Groves had good moments last season, but still didn’t do well enough to make it to the postseason, finishing district play in sixth place with four victories and nine losses. Much of the squad will be back to try and improve this time around, with the most significant change happening at setter, where Payton Metts graduated. The core of the team should have junior right side Blakely Burks joining seniors Addison Bost (outside hitter), Karleigh Gil (outside hitter), Allie Wright (libero), Kennedy McGlory (middle) and Mallori Moreno (middle). Sterling Sterling from Baytown was the second-best team in the district last season with 11 wins and three losses and won one playoff match before going down in the area round. There will be significant departures for the team to deal with as setter Ashley Aguilar and middle blocker Tanishua Joseph both graduating, but the Rangers will be ready to compete again. The team will get a lot of stability from their senior core of libero Briana Galvan and outside hitters Katy Barger and Bailee Payne and there are other seniors who could give the next step, such as outside hitter Briana Bentancourth and setter Kennedy Birdsell.

For 5A I expect Friendswood based on the level of club players zone to them to be the next thorn in BH's side to get past the 3rd round. Manvel will still be solid but my guess will be second place in that district. BH lost two srs off last years team with one being a D1 middle. They still have two D1 commits(MB and S) and loads of high level club experience with the rest of the Sr class. Huffman was pretty young but seems like they lost some key Srs too but should still expected to be strong. I believe the Libero had ACL surgery and most likely will not be back for high school season. Sterling lost a D1 middle and a juco setter so that will hurt but return a D1 OH. They should be in the playoff mix. Crosby has some pieces but without a coach/new coach not sure what to think about them. GCM won summer league but primarily played other schools JV teams so not sure what they really have. What about PNG and Nederland?

Good question and I have no idea. I do find it interesting the Sterling coach is the "lead" for the district and the Goose Creek ISD AD is the lead for the district in all sports. Sounds like to me Goose Creek has too much say in how things are done including awards.

I don't disagree. From what I have seen I have been very disappointed in BH. With the the players they have to work with they should be playing much much better. Not sure what is going on in practice but they have way too many pieces out of sync.

Eh I dont know. Depends on who is on the floor with Carter, if she is with others than can score she can dish it out, if she is the primary scorer she will score. Defense is a toss up as well. It is really a shame this game did not happen.

What does floor general mean? Dalanna can score and is quick as bug but she can distribute the ball just as well. I agree with you though, BH coach is a coward to call off the game to play Iowa Colony who they beat by 40 points. I also wonder why he will not post game stats. I did see they lost to West Brook, did anyone catch this game?

@KF89High school volleyball publication prep dig wrote a recap on the game and captured the significance of the absences while also giving Nederland credit. I don't see that as an excuse like you worded it but it is relevant to the story. I see you are a baseball guy Mike so, if you lost your starting pitcher, catcher and SS the day before a playoff game , I would think you would agree that the team you put on the field was not the same. The facts and data points that I listed point out the the reality of the situation had BH been fully healthy. It doesn't mean the backups aren't "good" or wont be good potentially in the future but it is not a one for one substitution. Again had it been 1 absence ok, but 3 the day before is pretty extreme to be ignored or to be prepared for. I hope none of the playoff teams have to deal with sickness like that but I think it will be a factor into the playoffs as my understanding is it (Flu and Strep Throat) is hitting all area high schools hard. BH had to cancel their playoff warmup game last night for the same reasons. With that said, the playoff matches are set. Good luck to both teams as they attempt to represent the district well. Just the facts here from looking at maxpreps: When they played the first time at full strength -BH won 25-12, 25-15, 25-14. A Blowout in volleyball. BH had not lost a set in two years in district and only one time this year had anyone scored over 20 in a one set. BH had not lost since playing in a tournament to a top 10 6A school in August. BH has only lost to one 5A team in the last two years before yesterday and that was to the state final 4 Manvel team last year. Yesterdays game had no bearing on seeding for playoffs with all teams locked into their positions which in effect made it meaningless. BH was without their starting setter/QB, a starting MH and a starting OH. Had the season been on the line, would these players have played? Maybe, but it wasn't. Last night, out of the blue and against all statistical data they lose 3 out of 4 sets trying to fill those gaps on a last minute basis. Sets 1 and 4 were decided with extra points meaning they could have gone either way. I'm going to go out on a limb and say missing the starters was the difference lol. One can argue many different things but those are the facts.

Can they even move it to Thursday ? Like switch the JV and Fresh to friday?
