Nederland is going to win state..
Guys, If I understand Dickie V's reasoning correctly, I can see what he means. Look at it this way. Coach English is getting about 95% out of his players... This is a result of great coaching! But Nederland is just about as good as they are going to get this year. But Ozen (and Central) has players with far more athletic potential and the coaching staff is NOT getting the most out of their potentials... let's say 60-70% (although the exact number is open to debate), the point is, that the Ozen team can be much, MUCH better with some better coaching. So, is DV picking on Nederland? I don't think so. But much like the HJ faithful who react like pitbulls when they feel HJ Is being maligned, the Nederland faithful are absolutely certain that DV is drinking HatorAde when it comes to Nederland. Frankly, I see his point. There is a coaching vacuum in Beaumont that is holding the Panthers and Jaguars from competing at the level that they could be (considering the talent on the teams). I hope I didn't muddy up the waters even further.
People are not having problems with his reasoning - it is more of an attitudinal issue -

No matter how good you are people are always going to talk about you, mostly because of jealousy, so take it as a compliment and ignore the rest. I know it is tough to do, but that is what I would hope I would do.
I don't worry about small opinions of small people...
More insults, huh? Why do people that do not have the same opinion that you do have to be deemed "small"? What makes you so much "bigger" than they are? Is your opinion THAT much greater?...( I am saying they, because I am taking me out of that "small people" equation)
Dickie- Let me give you something to consider when making these "large people" "small people" references. Whether it is intentional or not, it violates most everyone when they hear you word things in a manner that renders their opinion meaningless as compared to yours. It does NOT matter one IOTA whether there is validity to that contention or not. Taking that attitude ( or not taking it but portraying it) will be counterproductive in many avenues of life besides basketball. Frankly, I am not as troubled by it because I happen to realize what a big basketball world there is out there and NOBODY but NOBODY(including you) has the last word on it. I watched Charles Barkley get on the television a few years ago and "declare" ( in all of his "been there done that" wisdom) that the Cavs would beat Boston and if somehow they didnt, Orlando definitely would in the conference final. Well his "been there done that" prediction proved worthless as Boston won the Cleveland series in 6 and Orlando wasnt even in the final where Boston beat Detroit in five before beating the Lakers to take it all. You certainly are entitled to your opinion but you might want to reconsider how you structure your comments. There are a number of people on this board who have "earned their stripes"( I am not one of them) in the basketball world and for you to suggest that it is somehow less than what you have done makes you look like you are condescending to everyone else. At this point in your life, you simply are not in a position to condescend.
I am CERTAIN that you and obviously a few others are reading me all wrong...The "small" reference came from the poster bigdog, when he stated that he is not bothered by "small" people...I simply asked him what makes others opinion "small" and his "big"...As for where I am in my life, I am quite content...Although I have plans to return to the sideline, the fact that I am not there now, BY NO MEANS, indicate that I am any less of a person, or that my knowledge of the game is somewhat diminished. I don't understand that statement, but lets be clear. I am not any less today than I was 10 years ago..I am actually better, because I have learned some life lessons, which will make me an even better coach when I return, and more importantly a better person. I know what I know, and those that don't like that...well thats really not my problem...As I have said before, humility was not always my best quality, but I am working on it daily.. ;)
You have never heard me make any comment about whether or not you are on the sidelines. Doesnt matter a bit to me and, for all I know, you may be the greatest coach in the world. You know what you know but just fail to understand that others know what they know also. The only issue I believe you face on this board is attitudinal as opposed to experiential. If you find a different way to phrase some of your comments, I will bet you will find that you are not being singled out. If people are singling you out, there IS a reason for that and you ought to find a way, through your methods of communication, not to be singled out. It's nearly impossible, after all of this, to claim that you are a victim of some sort of unfair treatment. When you are dealing with a group of people with a wide and varying range of experience and values, you "earn" whatever treatment you get. If you don't like the treatment, you probably should change your approach. -

FIrst of all, I do not accept your "declaration" on the vast superiority of talent. ( I fully understand what you are saying but cant say on here) If we define "talent" as who can do the most double pumped 360sand runs/jumps the fastest/highest, I might agree with you but I have a different definition of talent or perhaps believe that intellect plays a bigger part in the game than you do and sorry, but the intellect factor" ain't" no greater at the Beaumont schools than in Nederland. A good example of the intellect factor is how HJ continues to be competitive against teams with far superior athletes. The 91 state championship team was full of not particularly athletic caucasians who were slower but could run longer than any of the "more talented" athletes and they polished their skills to a higher degree than the competition did. -

Your lengthy basketball resume has no extensive turnarounds in it and therefore you dont have as much insight in that area as you perceive yourself as having. A shining example is last year when Tom Thibodeau was selected Coach of The Year with Doug Collins and Greg Popovich behind him. Nowhere in the voting was Eric Spoelstra and/or Rick Carlisle who fought it out in the NBA finals.
I guess you and I, although both brilliant, have different perspectives on the subject... ;) 8)
Perhaps you have forgotten that I am familiar (from close up) with state championships both from a players and coaches perspective. Nederlands split with Central and Ozen equals doomsday for Nederland, but Ozens split with Livingston is not? How convenient.
(HUGE SIGH).... ::) ::)...I expected Nederland to lose both second round match ups to Central and Ozen...They are more talented and it was no real shock...The fact that they are battling with Nederland, who is not a traditional basketball power, tells me that there has been a shift in power in 20-4A, although the talent pool at Central and Ozen is STILL greater than it is at Nederland..It should not be that way, but Nederland has a great coach, who has built that program from the ashes...The kids in BISD should be given that same chance...again... ::)
(an even bigger sigh) Translation= The Nederland wins over Central and Ozen earlier in the year mean nothing but the Central and Ozen wins over Nederland put things in "proper perspective" ( of course, according to the DV "proper perspective" theory) Ozen and Central should have won BOTH games with Nederland because they have so much more talent. Perhaps too much emphasis is put on "talent". If the talent is so superior, both Beaumont Schools should have won both Nederland games by double digit margins. And I S T I L L do not have a satisfactory explanation why the excessive talent lost to Livingston by a double digit margin and escaped LCM in overtime. -

It's Every direction people are leaving...And there is nothing wrong with Sour lake... It's a great school...
No question about that...excellent basketball program too..I just know that BISD should never lose a basketball player to HJISD..What could you possibly gain, OTHER than being in a better basketball program, THESE days? Nothing wrong with Sour Lake...Why would a family move from Liberty to Houston to get AWAY from traffic and congestion? Makes about the same amount of sense...Westbrook is a really good school, but the basketball program is suffering...So why HJISD from BISD?....Basketball.
You need to remember that you are using YOUR values and YOUR logic and attempting to suggest that your method is what everybody else uses. Sorry, that won't fly. I moved to Sour Lake long before basketball was a consideration ini order to access the school district and for the benefits of semi-rural living and being on a golf course. Basketball is not the primary reason that people are leaving the city.

I'm trying to figure out whose in the elite 0.1% ;)
it's me. i never demean individual players ;)
WAs quite a bit tougher paying my bills then than it is now. Older thought his economic conditions were far worse than when younger had his turn. I agree- You never do that. I have two questions regarding that. !. Do you think that has anything to do with a social lean to the left? 2. Would you be more inclined to criticize a player if his father was a rich Republican? ;D
nah, your sons were some of my favorite HJ players when i was younger ;)
-

Coach wise needs to take lessons.
:D I', sure HJ put in their bench players for valuable playing time. I expect them to play just as hard as JY's bench players ;)
yup, but i bet HJ's bench was playing really hard in a half-court defense and offense, and not running a press with a 2nd string that would start for most other houston schools...
Dude, it really don't matter how you try and sugar coat it, a 75 point win or a 50 point win. JY's style is to press the whole game. Thats their system. Maybe HJ's system is press and play half court. Go JY ! [s]Go HJ! [/s] OOOPS! Got too carried away.
Dove- there you go again. It's ok for Yates to have large margins of victory and yet you post that HJ "ran up the score" on Orangefield. Which is it? Or is it possibly "writers choice"?
Nah, its okay for HJ to run up scores, I have a problem with yall who *pretend* HJ ain't running up scores. JY,HJ, SHS, etc all trying to get quality minutes to their players when possible. Nothing wrong with that.
The way you word that, I get the impression that you think people are complaining that Yates leaves their starters in too much?

Was there shooting that bad? 2 point 1st quarter is bad! Zero for Orangefield in the 3rd even worst.
Unofficially, Silsbee missed their first 6 shots in the 1st quarter - some at point blank range. They were very tight for some reason; don't know what that was about. In fact, Silsbee never really looked comfortable at any stage of the game.
Yeah, that. I've had my worry cap on since the first quarter last night. Second consecutive outing that the Tigers have been lethargic.
From an alternate viewpoint, perhaps having a couple of games like that in a short span DECREAES the likelihood of it happening again.
