Interesting Question about district 20-4A

To me, its pretty simple. Normally it isnt the case but this year it just happens that the top two teams in the area are from the same 3-a district. If someone would have asked me before the year started if that was a likely outcome, I would have said probably not. Even though it is an unlikely rarity, it is what it is and discussions wont change it. Furthermore, the two teams dont win just because they press- they win because they are better than the other team(s) they played against. All good coaches have their teams prepared for a press, so it was no surprise when it happened. Face it, the press is effective and it takes intelligence, athleticism, and speed to be effective. The two teams have those qualities in varying degrees.
Never said the press wasnt effective.. Just trying to help you understand some of these results.. You can game-plan as much as you want, but it will beat you if your team doesnt get reps and see it enough.. Which is my point to the 20-4A.. If those teams saw it on a regular basis, you would see that HJ and Silsbee arent leaps and bounds ahead these teams.. Just dont want people saying they would come into the district thinking its going to be just another cake-walk to the play-offs
No doubt that if they saw it on a regular basis, they would adjust. But, then again, so would Silsbee and HJ against whatever they would see in that district on a regular basis. Let go of it. HJ beat Nederland this year and you cant make that go away like you tried once already when you cried "Oh yeah? Let em play again and see what happens". I have already stated this was an abnormal year in the local basketball ranks but you cant rewrite history and the results speak unchangeable volumes. -
Its a different style of Ball then what the teams in 20-4A are used to playing.. Execution and fundamentals in the Half-court are more important and mean more in getting a victory.. As for HJ and Silsbee, better warm-up your legs and have press-breaks ready.. I think the 20-4A teams would perform much better if they were used the those types of games.. I can take heat for this comment and wont bother me, but Silsbee and HJ's players arent studs by any means.. They fit the system, like a glove.. Run the press, attack, sub when you are tired..
They may not be studs but Shawn Prudhomme is closer to a stud than any player in 20-4a. Sorry, but thats just the way it is this year. -

I may be wrong but silsbee and hj are miles ahead of teams they play. I bet some jv teams in 20 4a cld beat the other 3a teams(others meaning every body but hj and silsbee). hj and silsbee wld do well in 4a but they wouldnt trump nederland central and ozen. no cake walk games
I'd like to think Ozen's JV would give HJ's varsity a good fight ;)
What a surprise. Does the Ozen Jv regularly beat the varsity in their scrimmages?
What did I say about HJ's varsity?
You said you would like to think the Ozen Jv would give HJ varsity a good fight. I asked if the Ozen JV beats the Ozen varsity as a barometer of how Ozen Jv would do against HJ varsity. I "would like to think" that HJ could give Flower Mound Marcus a good fight too. -

Yes, Larry is my man. Probably definitely the exception rather than the rule. It also doesnt hurt to be a good shooter and 6'9'' coming out of high school. James Gulley had a good career at Lamar battlling players like Karl Malone and he came from little old Newton. But you are probably right about "the system". If the guy who runs the system insists that you buy into it, perhaps it means giving up some of that other stuff that might get you noticed. By the way Dove, some of my most brilliant predictive efforts came in those days when I told people that after watching Karl Malone and Joe Dumars come play against Lamar that neither one of then would make it in the NBA. Looks like I was just slightly off on those predictions. -
The one thing I've noticed about HJ, Silsbee, and Nederland is this: A. Their not the most athletic teams B. Their players very seldom make it to the next level in major D-1 programs C. Their programs win consistently D. Have youth programs in place ( not really sure what *major* factor plays into this) E. Players have bought into the system (major factor) F. Players understand their roles on the team. Some are better rebounders, defense, etc(major factor)
Careful there, Dove. Someone might get the idea that you like/respect HJ. Maybe part of the reason nobody goes D-1 from those schools is that their main objective is for the team to do well rather than to make a player or two major college material not to mention the fact that it doesnt happen in small towns very often. -

But also, bear in mind, although HJ beat Nederland and Central, I was hazard to guess that Nederland and Central have improved much more since those earlier games than HJ has. Those games would be neck and neck if played during district.
What makes you "hazard to guess" that HJs improvement vs the beginning the first of the year is not equal to or better than that of Nederland and Central? Wouldn't you need to have seen several of each teams games since early in the season to make that guess or are you simply using recent scores as the basis? ( recent scores dont seem to support the contention)
Steve, you love to question everyone's opinion, don't you! i can easily say Nederland because several of their players were still in Football when they played HJ. Onthe flip side, HJ was in 4th gear from the very first game of the season.
Well, I always thought that this board was intended to be an avenue where ideas and opinions are exchanged. Just curious why you felt that way. Plenty of people (including you sometimes) play devils advocate on this board. Have learned many things over the years by doing so. Nederland has had a couple of letdowns in recent times(long after football is a memory) so I dont think the football theory is as valid as you do but obviously, it's only my opinion. -

If that would happen, I would name that child Redundant Nash. Additionally, I would make sure that the first words out of his mouth would be dunk-0-meter -

If Nash had a child, the poor kid wouldnt have a chance. He would also be the first kid to be banned from the board before he ever signed on. -
Who is this "Dick" guy? He seems like another HJ fan that thinks he is a basketball "Guru". Here is my question since there are so many HJ fans that run this site. Who is the best basketball guru of yalls kind on this site? I'm having hard time picking which one I should be taking notes from!!! ;D
Best Guru, without a doubt, is Da Dove. -

I don't ever remember having a senior game, but maybe we did and memory is slipping. But I do remember letting a player in for his last game integrated with the starters. But I was raised to play your best players and players *earned* playing time. I just don't see it anymore.
So TRUE -- BLUE! ;D I remember having to have a good lead and then maybe a senior or two would get in if they were bench players or waiting until fourth quarter AND having the lead then the seniors would close out the game (and they had to keep the lead of course).
I knew I wasn't dreaming- So kids at one time actually had to earn their playing time ;D
Thats the way it's supposed to be but the lefties are even distorting not only our economic values but our values in sports. -

stevenash replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Mainly because HJ has a well established Little Dribblers program that allows them to remain competitive in a football oriented district and most of the time, they have a staff that is not football oriented. They also have won 7 state golf championships but none recently and it has nothing to do with the coaches (all of whom, but one, knew little if anything about golf) As for Westbrook, I think it would be very interesting to compare its performance before Ozen came into existence and afterward because I am pretty confident that many "would have been" Westbrook students began attending Ozen. Did the Giants win the Superbowl because of Tom Coughlin, the same guy who coached them to something like a 9-7 record? -

Wouldnt like it a bit but am not foolish enough to believe it can't happen. If Brown is a good recruiter and a lesser coach, how did he get the job done a few years ago so much better than now. After all, you are simply saying that a few years ago, he recruited well and coached poorly and this year you are saying the same thing. -
