Whether they were fouls in the first half doesn't matter. They definitely were in the second. My point was that in the fourth quarter the biggest opponent the hawks had was the clock. We needed to play good defense without reaching or trying for the tough steals and stopping that clock. We needed good offensive possessions to keep that clock running. Yes hj started hitting 3's but not everyone was going to go in. Could the game still have gotten close.....sure. We just didn't need to help by stopping the clock so much.
I understand what you are saying but respectfully disagree on similar fouls not being called in the first half and whether or not they mattered. Some of those that were not called in the first half led to scores for Silsbee and unproductive possessions for HJ, hence the "reward" theory for Silsbee in the first half. I also understand your theory about not stopping the clock, but , just for examples sake, keep in mind that three of those "unneccessary Silsbee reaching fouls" ,while stopping the clock three different times, could have been offset by HJ making just one three pointer in one possession (one made three pointer vs three trips to the line where 1 shot was made each time). ( If that hypothetical three pointer is made and no "reaching"fouls are committed, that gives HJ two more "unfouled" possessions to try to generate more points than the 1 they earn on each trip to the line) Most teams play a particular style and choose to live and die by it. Silsbee lived by it for three quarters and had problems for 1 quarter. Hj died by it for three quarters and did well for one quarter. Personally, I would have much preferred to see HJ zone Silsbee just as Nederland did but they are paying somebody else to make those decisions. I guess those in power at HJ feel that they have people better qualified than me ;D
Man I really dont know what to say about ozen. I refuse to put all the blame on The coaching staff heck I wnt blame them at all in this post lol. The players on that team play when they want to and only when they want to. Ive been to most of the games this year and theynever seem so play with any passion unless they are playing central and nederland. Those guys are too darn good to play like they did the other night. They need to take lessons from the lady panthers. The girls are mor entertaining to watch then the boys. The girls could care less who they play they are going to play their hardest if the win by 3 or by 95 you know they gave it their all. I question that of the boys alot. Granted increased intensity by HJ was a cause in some of it. Poor decisions on the Tigers part played a big part as well. Several senseless fouls sending Hj to the line and way too many short offensive possessions as well as a loss of defensive intensity.
Some would consider that forcing a 50% free throw shooting team to the line to be a good strategy, particularly is they are beginning to shoot better from the field. Silsbee earned what they got in three quarters and HJ earned what they got in 1 quarter.
Never said hj didn't earn what they got, I did say we did them favors in getting it. Why don't you ask your "source" or Coach Sutherland if they want their team to have reaching or similar fouls in the back court or out well past the three point line with a large lead in the fourth quarter. I would guess their answer would be the same no matter what free throw percentage the other team shot. Now if that lead was down to 4 pts early in that quarter that answer might change. The Tigers did not play as well in that quarter mentally, yes partly due to hj and partly a trait the Tigrs have had. For our sake it needs to end.
The fouls you speak of, in my opinion, took place the entire game and in some earlier cases contributed to HJ turnovers when they were not called. Therefore, there were benefits from them at certain points and penalties for them at other points. The referees interpreted those actions differently later in the game. Bottom line is still that Silsbee was fully responsible for the good they did in three quarters and HJ was fully responsible for the good they did in the last quarter rather than because Silsbee got called for some fouls. Truth be told, I too would have preferred Silsbee not get called for the fouls you mentioned because HJ was starting to make a few threes and I would much rather have had HJ have additional field goal opportunities than to make every other free throw they took.

The suite was full of all kinds of free stuff. What a night it could have been for you. You would have been able to watch HJ get beaten and, at the same time, been the recipient of lots of free stuff. -

Silsbee is twice as good as Hj this year so don't let that comeback fool ya. It'll be another 10yrs before Hj beat Silsbee again in Basketball on the Varsity level. Silsbee farm system is loaded....lol
10 years? How did you come up with that figure? Are you sure it isnt 8 years or perhaps 13 years?

That is overwhelming odds to overcome to play a team with 7 of the top 10 players. Good thing there are just opinions on here. Unlike some if we lose I will give props to the winner not excuses. Good luck to my Hawks against overwhelming odds.
Not overwhelming at all, only 5 play at a time and having at least the two best shooters on the floor is A BIG plus for hj. Besides I didn't rank those top 10 in my opinion, no telling where those hj players fall into that list. If having a large numbe if better players guaranteed a win some of these pro teams would never lose. It's the TEAM that plays best that wins not the player.
Yeah, Poppa, get outta' here with that BS reverse psychology. You've been serving that stuff up for too long now. ;D 8)
I didn't pull the 7 of the 10 best players out of the air...It came from a self proclaimed expert...with all of that said I just don't see how we can win. Only 5 at a time, we have played them plenty of times when it was 8 on 5 ;) . Even the news proclaimed last night in mentioning Silsbee's record but qualified it with them playing a much harder schedule. I'm excited to see how it all comes out. Hopefully we can keep it respectable tonight.
I am far from one of the self-proclaimed experts on here!!! Merely stated my opinion, hard to base to much on having only seen most of those hj players a few times. Besides listening to all you experts from hj, those 3 state titles over the last 50 years or so make y'all the big favorite! There are plenty of great coaches out there who never make it to Austin. Many are, what I call, turnaround artists ,and Mr. English certainly fits in that category. There are other coaches who do well but always assume the reins at an established program and get some credit that came from whoever preceeded them. In the many years that I have been watching basketball in this area, I would bet that if you gave Mr. English a losing program to turn around, there would be few if any who would do a better job over, say, a five year period. -

Therefore, I respectfully suggest that WO athleticism was not the main problem for HJ. However, I fully understand just how "enlightened" it sounds for some Monday morning quarterbacks to say that. My guess is that HJ is not likely to repeat the above stats when they meet WO in Sour Lake but I fully understand anything is possible.
I spoke with WO-S head coach the next morning after that game. Those numbers you posted are accurate, but WO-S shot the same low percentage from the field as HJ did.
