1. Not sure what the "language" comment was referring to as far as the Yates players, but I do know that a couple of them told the HJ cheerleaders to "Get the F--- off of our floor".  HJ cheerleaders happened to be behind the basket on the baseline at the same end where Yates was warming up prior to the game. Also one of the Yates players (#2) fouled Sammy Mitchell, knocking him down (no big deal), but then stood over him and bumped him when he tried to get up.  #2 got a technical for it, and then acted surprised about it. No question Yates tries to intimidate.  They were the better team and they won the game, but I think it was pretty clear that they did not intimidate HJ.  The game was still very competitive (margin was about 7) when Dylan Mays picked up his 4th foul mid-to-late 3rd quarter.  After that, the size and depth factor really kicked in and that was that.  Yates was much, much deeper, and obviously much bigger. * Also a side note, #12 Swift for Yates is not in shape.  He was huffing and puffing a lot.  Good player, but they had to sub him out every few minutes and he was sucking air bad.  Problem is, they just rolled in another about his size... **Another side note, I was very surprised to see Coach Wise whining and complaining to the refs so much.  On reputation, I expected him to be a cool customer.  I almost expected cool detachment (a la Paul Benton for those from Houston who may know him).  Not the case.  He spoke to the refs almost as much as he spoke to his team.
2. OK BD, how about the rest of my question?  I know that Ozen has really good guard play, but not a lot of size.  What was the game plan, or how did Ozen almost beat Yates?  Sounds like a winnable game that was very close.
3. Just curious.  When did Ozen play Yates?  Was that regular season, or summer ball, or what?  I recall that Ozen played them very close, like 4 pts, right?  How was Ozen able to keep the game that close given the size disadvantage? Again, not trying to compare Ozen to HJ; just curious about that game.
4. Do Silsbee and Yates just get to advance by default, or will the games in the next round be played first?  If the kids are looking ahead like y'all are, it could be trouble.  Just win one at a time; that's what the playoffs are all about
5. Probably the nicest gym in the area (that's not an "arena" like the Montagne, Ford, etc).
6. Any truth to the rumor that Yates may be dropping to 2A in the next re-alignment so they can win another classification and get a shot at Kountze?  :D
7. Central is full of sophs, but their best might just be the freshman.    8) We go way back with Nijal to the 9-year old BLD all-stars.  Proud of how he has developed.  Future is bright.
8. Then I seem to recall HJ beating Longview (the team that knocked Humble out) by about 17.  Same Longview team that Central only beat by about 3 points a week or two later. Dang HJ plays a weak schedule!  Weak 4A playoff teams...
9. I can't believe that Yates is running from Kountze like this! (I know.  Couldn't help it!)  ;)
10.
Whit one of  H.J. best player gone .!!! They won't have a chance tonight against Silsbee ..#3 D.Johnson  was a big part of H.J. team...And next year H. J. Won't come no where close to Silsbee..  ;D
No so sure about that for next year.  Silsbee loses a bunch of really good players...
11. Agree.  Let those numbers sink in a minute.  619-111 over 20 years.  31-6 average record.  Success at EC, WOS, Kountze, HJ.  2 state championships, and at least 2 more final fours.  That doesn't even mention the years as an assistant when he had a hand in some champion teams with strong records.  The talent level is up and down over the years, but the winning continues.... Very impressive.
12. Sigler was on SportsXtra with several players the week before the Ford Park game.
13. Many probably don't know the significance of Fonde Rec.  That's where Houston basketball was built.  Played in a league there many years ago.  Moses Malone taught Hakeem how to play in that gym...
14. He is a good player.  The freshman group was solid without him, but he is a good on-the-ball defender and adds athleticism.  Seems to be a good fit with the other kids too.  They play very well together as a group.
15. Think he came to Nederland from Legacy in Bmt, but isn't the Ballou kid on the freshman team a PA kid? Good player
16. One thing I have found to generally be the case in basketball refereeing is that the aggressor gets rewarded.  Attacking the basket, or just generally attacking is the right "attitude" to play with.  I can think of several teams (and players) who would benefit from being more aggressive.  Foul counts are an interesting stat, though not always indicative of what some fans may think. I have told my sons on many occasions that "if you are tentative, you will make mistakes (turnovers, etc), and if you are aggressive you might make mistakes.  Might as well be aggressive and see what happens!" Play aggressive and most refs and coaches will give you the benefit of the doubt.  Play tentative and ride the pine..... ;)
17. When HJ played there, the heat was blasting then too.  It was ridiculous.  Also, a question; is the free throw stat correct?  Silsbee shot 30 more free throws than WOS?  Really???
18. If Silsbee avoids a mental letdown, they will roll...
19. This is the type of matchup that makes high school basketball great.  You know it will be a packed house.  And after the game everyone will try to draw lots of conclusions about what it means, etc.; but I can tell you now that whoever loses is still a good basketball team that will be in the playoffs.
20. The players may well have come because of Coach Boutte, which is quite a compliment to him.  But the players did come, and quickly.  That's a fact.  And now in Bmt the players are spread around more, and there is no clear "best coach in the district" any more since Boutte left.
21. Tommy Collins coached at the University of St. Thomas (in Houston) just before they dropped the program in the mid-80's.  One of his players was none other than "The Undertaker" of WWF fame.
22. Wow, this thread is full of "people who live in glass houses".  I can only imagine the crap storm that would ensue if there were "negative" comments made about:  Nederland, Silsbee, Kountze, the little doves, Central, and I could go on and on... It ain't just HJ peeps, but for whatever reason they seem to be the easiest (and most frequent) target of all the rest. I'll end my comments by saying that any team can have an off night, or any team can rise up and play well, on any given night.  And sometimes it's a combination of both.................................................. Is there any group of people on earth any more inconsistent than teenage boys?  I'm a dad and I don't think so......................................
23. Anybody in that tournament that can give Nederland a run for the money?  Just looking at the list of teams I would think Nederland is the favorite.
24. HJ Freshman team beat Lumberton this morning by about 26.  Then this afternoon they came from 21 down to beat PA Memorial by 1.  This is the same PA Memorial team that beat Nederland's "Fab 5" earlier this week.  (And Nederland people, that is meant as a compliment; your freshmen group is the best I've seen in the area). Will play Kountze in the championship on Saturday. It even looked like "real basketball" ;)
25. It happens sometimes.  It's also very difficult to play that many kids. I have not seen PA Memorial's freshman group.  I did see a PA team that age in one of Coach English's summer tournaments.  They played very physical (basically fouled so much that the refs couldn't possibly call everything).  Couldn't shoot well, but pounded the boards and scored mostly on fast breaks and put-backs.  Wonder if it's the same group of kids.
