Well ricko - you live in Brenham and would love to move back to Liberty County in a heartbeat ? I find that a little suspect in its self . :D  For the sake of argument I'll take you at face value and assume  you are who you say you are. Why don't you think we are as good as last year ? We played the same  weak 19-4a teams last year and made it to the Reg. final where we out played Brenham most of the game. We returned a critical core of starters from 2009 that are bigger.stronger, faster and better than last years great team if Coach Stewart didn't think so he never would of scheduled 5a playoff teams for the first time in school history. We more than held our own in all of the pre-district games and more than likely if we played them today we would win all of them. Our Defense can match up to most any 4a team in the state and is something special. The Elkins coach said it was hard to believe that the Dayton team held their offense down like they did when they were use to running on 5a teams at will . Don't let our win/lose record fool you this team is very confident and has all the right tools to match up with anybody even Brenham !

LOL It is really nice down that way. I really enjoy that area.  As far as this year compared to last year, I think, and again it's just my opinion, which is worth jack squat lol, that last year had a better composed offense.  In the game against Brenham last year, I thought Dayton dominated.  I really did.  Payton Ploch was an amazing player who really seemed to have control of the field.  I was told that he was injured in the game, which explained why Herrera saw so much action.  That confused me during the game because Ploch was killing the Brenham D.  The defense of Dayton is always pretty strong.  There just hasn't been anything stand out to me to make me think that this years defense is head and shoulders above last years (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, last years defense was pretty good).  But I just don't feel confident about Dayton's offense against a stronger team.  But certainly no one is thinking that Dayton can't compete.  Jerry Stewart is one of, if not the, best coach in Texas football day, bar none.  If you can't give the Dayton Broncos respect for their program you need your head examined.
  2. Here is my problem with Dayton's defense. And before I get jumped on, let me say, I love Dayton. I actually love all of Liberty County, it is such a homey and peaceful place. If I was able I'd move back there in a heartbeat, I have many friends and family there.  But as far as Dayton this season, I just don't think they are as good as last year.  I know that they have made strides since the first three games, but I think that's mainly due to a lack of competition.  I mean, there are only two other teams in the whole district that even have a winning record.  The combined record of all the teams in your district other than Dayton is 25-38.  And I can understand early season issues, but when the big games came, Elkins, Ike and Angleton, Dayton didn't win any of them.  Maybe the team has come together and can be a beast.  But my fear is that they are going to get another soft touch in round 1 with someone like Livingston and then run into a buzzsaw when they play Brenham.  Lucky for me, I live in Brenham, so no matter who wins the Brenham v. Dayton game I'll have someone to root for!
  3. There is a really easy way to look at this to determine if Brenham has played anyone.  We hear people in this thread saying Brenham's schedule was weak.  Well the overall win/loss record for the teams the Cubs played this year is 43-47.  By comparison, the Dayton Broncos opponents for this season had a combined win loss record of 44-47.  Nearly identical.  Brenham is undefeated, Dayton has 3 losses.  And sure people will say, "Oh but Dayton's losses were to tougher teams."  Not so fast.  Dayton dropped a game to Elkins, the same Elkins that lost to Houston Lamar, the same Houston Lamar that Brenham dominated.  They also lost a game to Angleton, and if you want to debate quality of competition, lets just see who goes farther in division 1 this year, Angleton or Montgomery.

Brenhamfan , how are Brenham's JV and freshman teams doing and are their any standouts?

The duel running backs Tyler Watts and Malik Wilson on the freshman team looked pretty good to me for younger kids.  I think they could have some real potential in the next few years.  There is also a quarterback on the freshman squad, I think his name is Yeagar, he looks pretty decent.

okay, to everyone who has said that Montgomery's defense has averaged a lot more ppg than Brenham's 3.6: You are totally correct. But, i have to ask you: how many games has Brenham had their second string in??? Montgomery has put their second/and or third string in five out of the six games we've played. Unless Brenham can say that they've done that also, then that stat is non-comparable!  ;)

I'd say it's pretty easy to put in your second stringers when you haven't beaten a team with a winning record all season.  And I'm fairly certain Brenham has probably played their backups just as much, if not more than Montgomery.  I know last week for instance, no starters played the entire second half (except for the opening kickoff).  The bottom line is that you guys are averaging about 4 times as many points per game against lesser competition.  Don't worry, tonight you'll get to see what we mean.

We've already played 3 early games vs.09 playoff teams and those were big, atheletic, fast teams w/plenty of skilled players and a bench full of good reserves. Now we're seeing the true results of those losses that ko'd the Broncos from the rankings temporary. The good thing almost every skill position has another year.Nobody @ the local 4a area gets more out of less than Coach Jerry Stewart who most yrs has less than 20 seniors while many others field 28-43

This is the thing that scares me the most about Dayton.  I don't believe for a split second that their team this year is better than last years team.  Yet, I think if Brenham matches up with them in round 2, I think it will be the toughest game the Cubs have in 4a all season, including Montgomery.  Those kids in Dayton are just so well coached, it doesn't matter if they have a team of worldbeaters, they can still play with anyone on the field.  I was surprised they lost to Angleton, I expected them to shut Diggs down, but hey, the kid is a beast.  There's no doubt in my mind the Broncos win out until they face Brenham in round 2. How the Cubs handle the Montgomery offense will let me know how that Brenham v. Dayton will turn out.

Brenhamfan if Montgomery gives up more defensively then explain then how Waller put 229 tot.yds on the Cubs then the next week Waller has 110 tot.yds vs.Montgomery?Just sayin you're stretching the truth somewhat, yes the Cubs have been stingy on defense but against what schedule?Only 1 real good team Hou/Lamar the others mediocre at best. This game will tell the real story.I picked the Cubs @ their house in a close game, less than a td.
    [/quote]

Not a very intelligent statement here.  Montgomery's opponents have a combined win loss record of 15-21.  The Bears have actually not beaten a team with a winning record all season.  Crosby is at 500, Spring is 2-4, Jones is 2-4, Stratford is 500, Mag West is 500 and Waller is 2-4.  Now yes, Brenham's combined opponent record is almost the same, but the difference is:  1.  We beat a strong winning program, Houston Lamar, a 5a school that is 5-1 and 2. Against these teams we have allowed 3.6 points a game.  Montgomery, against lesser competition, has allowed 4 times that much. Also we can look at common opponents.  There are two, Waller and Magnolia West.  Montgomery beat these teams with a combined score of 52-14.  Brenham beat those same teams 1st, by a score of 89-10.  No comparison.
  8. There is no comparison between the Brenham defense and the Montgomery defense.  Brenham's defense has taken it to a new level.  I don't think it would be speaking out of school to say that Brenham has the best defense in 4A.  These kids are allowing 3.6 ppg. A field goal a game. That's it.  I was thinking about a week ago that this was going to be a nailbiter.  After seeing Montgomery vs. Waller, I dont' feel that way anymore.  Brenham wins this comfortably and I'm going to make a bold prediction and say that the Cub defense does not allow a touchdown in this game.  Brenham 35 Montgomery 9.
  9. This should be for all intents and purposes, a total whitewash.  If the Cub Defense allows a touchdown, I'd be disappointed.

But Montgomery is a different story.  I'm actually a little concerned about Dobbins this year.  If you watched Brenham vs. Waller, in the first half the Cubs had a lot of problems stopping the Waller QB once he got around that outside corner.  Could it be that Brenham just wasn't ready for the wishbone? Possibly.  This is probably the best defense we've ever had.  They are averaging 4.4 points per game.  But if Dobbins gets to the outside, I am not sold that Brenham can stop him.  Either way, this will be one hell of a game.
  10. This defense is insane.  The Cubs have played four games against Huntsville, Lamar Consol, Houston Lamar and Magnolia West.  Thus far this season they have allowed 1 touchdown.  The Cubs have outscored their opponents 135-10.  Watching Magnolia West try to run on the Cubs tonight was like watching a bird fly into a brick wall.  I think Mag West ended up with negative yards for the night.  This from a team that was 2-1 coming in.  Is there a better defense in 4a?
  11. Unless Angleton has greatly altered their play in the post season, Dayton wins this one and it won't be close.  Dayton is lacking Ploch this year, but they are a well coached team and a class act to boot.  Angleton on the other hand is poorly coached. They were also lacking class when they played Brenham last year, taunting players/fans when they had the lead, once Brenham took over they started showing their ***, making a late hit on a QB that was on one knee in the victory formation.  Once you contain Diggs, the game is over.  I could not believe they may it as deep as they did against Brenham with absolutely no passing game. If they haven't learned to throw the rock, Dayton will make them pay.  If Dayton covers the outside corners, they'll shut Diggs down.

  12. I spoke with a coach from Dayton at the Angleton v. Brenham game yesterday.  Very nice guy.  They run a very classy camp over there at Dayton.  I doubt we will see any of the poor sportsmanship we saw from Angleton at the conclusion of yesterday's game.  As far as Brenham and Dayton I think there are a few factors.  One is that Brenham wants revenge, they have about the same team as last year while this year's Dayton team is not as good as last years (although that is not a knock against Dayton, Green and Dugat are hard to replace).  I think the whole game boils down to whether or not Brenham's offensive line will protect against Dayton's defensive front.  If Schlottman has time to throw the ball, Brenham will put up the points.  I don't believe that Dayton's secondary can play with Brenham's recievers.  Derek Edwards is a big guy and Terrell Reese is a Utah commit, who has great hands.  Dayton's offense I think will have a tough time if they don't focus on the pass.  If Brenham can contain the speed of Angleton, that makes me think they can contains Dayton's run.  I've never seen a team as fast as Angleton. Should be a good one but I think the Cubs are just a little more balanced.
