  1. Talk about it in Inside the 40 Acres

James Haynes has seen his stock soar with an impressive run of summer camp performances, and the West Orange-Stark athlete is now ready to put his talents to the test during his senior season beginning this Friday.

James Haynes opened some eyes this summer with his camp performances.

Haynes, a 6-foot-1, 181-pound speedster, will make the move from running back to receiver this season, and he's been hard at work this summer to make sure it will be a smooth transition.

"I've been a running back all my life and they moved me to receiver. My hands weren't as good as I wanted them to be. Worked all summer to get them to where they are now. So I've been working on that and trying to put a little muscle on my body," said Haynes.

A talented pass-catcher that has this summer displayed terrific hands to go along with his athleticism, Haynes has welcomed the change of position.

"When I moved up to varsity, I guess they just thought I was going to be a wide receiver. It was a change for me. I didn't even know how to get into a wide receiver stance," he said. "They had to teach me all the basics. I only started playing football in the sixth grade so I wasn't playing that long, and the only position I had ever played was running back.

"I didn't know too much coming in but last year I learned a lot of things. I learned you have to block well, keep my feet under me, I learned the routes and right now I'm confident in everything I do."

On the recruiting front, James is beginning to land on the radars of several area programs with his strong camp showing (including earning MVP at the National Under Classmen Ultimate 100 Combine in DeSoto), and there's one school that's standing out on his early wish list.

"I would like to go to LSU," Haynes said. "But really, I'll go anywhere that's close to home. My family is from Louisiana. If I was able to go to a school around there, they could just take one day off to come watch me play instead of having to take the whole weekend."

Haynes is also being watched by the Texas Longhorns, another program that's among his group of favorites. Haynes camped at Texas in 2007 and he attended the Horns' game against Texas Tech last season.

"My coach had told me that Major Applewhite had called and asked about me. My coach said he wanted to send coach Applewhite a video of me after my second game," Haynes said. "I love Texas. I love the facilities, I love the people up there, the atmosphere around game time. It's really nice up there."

As for a timeline, the blue-chip pass catcher said he's unsure if he'll make an early commitment or wait things out.

"I'd have to talk to my parents. I haven't really looked at any schools as far as what I want to major in (sports medicine). So I'd like to check out everything and learn everything I can," Haynes said. "I'd rather wait and take my official visits, get to know the coaching staff and the players before I commit. When I make my decision, I want it to be a good decision that I can stick with."

Wherever you thought perennial Class 3A power West Orange-Stark was going to finish this year, you might want to move it up a couple notches.

WO-S receiver/running back James Haynes showed speed, hands and several gears to burst into the open and into the spotlight at Schuman's National Underclass Combine in DeSoto featuring an invitation-only list of athletes for the Class of 2010 from across the Southwest and Midwest.

West Orange-Stark junior WR James Haynes rose to the top of a regional Class of 2010 combine.

The 6-0 ½, 180-pounder ran a 4.51 on a soft field turf that gave up no better time among the 260 participants from Texas to Minnesota. Haynes, who also will play defensive back for WO-S, was all but un-coverable and showed great athleticism and hands in the afternoon football drills.

"Let me put it this way, if he were an '09 (recruit), I could call a couple of SEC coaches and have them look at his video tonight and he'd have scholarship offers tomorrow," said Barry Every, rivals.com's national recruiting analyst attending the combine. "(Haynes) was running an inside route full speed and the quarterback threw it over the wrong shoulder. He turned 180 degrees and made the catch looking like that was the direction he was running the whole way. He made plays like that all afternoon."

Haynes was among many '010 prospects who jumped onto national radars. Grand Prairie's B.J. Christmas ran a 4.55 and showed he's fully recovered from a hip injury that kept him out at South Grand Prairie last season. He's transferring to GP. Cedar Park's Dom Espinosa, Little Elm's Garrett Sullivan were among the top linemen. Sullivan, who advanced a grade is only 15 heading into his third year on the Little Elm varsity.

Cy Fair CB Duran Snoddy and LaGrange QB Josh Schneider all also consistently shined throughout the 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. day.

If he weren't a Class of 2011, Killeen Ellison LB/RB Devon Hocutt might have been named LB of the day among his elders. Hocutt will run as a halfback/fullback along with recent Texas Tech commit Daniel Cobb in a power-running, 3-back offense under new coach Buddy McBride, a former DC who might have trouble letting the powerfully built, 5-11, 210-pound Hocutt off the defensive side.

For Haynes, he could be a huge spark to a youthful offense at talent-laden WO-S, generally ranked in the Top 10 of pre-season polls. Haynes had all his explosiveness and acceleration despite driving all night with his dad, Jimmy Haynes, to get to the DeSoto combine.

"I didn't get off work until 11 p.m. and we traded driving until we got here at about 4:30 a.m.," Haynes said. "We pulled into a Waffle House parking and slept a couple hours and then came over here."

Haynes has come into his athleticism. His dad, who was a overachieving, undersized defensive end at Beaumont South Park, has been exposed to major camps in the past. He credited WO-S coach Dan Hooks and assistant Toby Foreman for helping prepare and know of upcoming events. Haynes also already has a strong performance at a Texas Tech camp.

  5. The OC 12u went to New Braunfels this weekend. We went 1-1 in pool ans 1-2 in bracket playing against all 2nd year 12's. We got a great compliament from a Spring Klein IMPACT coach though. He said that several 2nd year 12u teams were playing in the "B" tournament and that our little ladies looked very good against the older teams . We did beat the GCB in the losers bracket and lost our last game in ITB. We did have a TOTAL team with every girl helping at some time.

Also Stircrazy came about as close as you can come to getting ejected from a game when he yelled at the ump YOUR MISSING A GOOD GAME and then the ump replied coach get in the dugout and do not come out again. :) :)
