  1. You can have the best Jimmy and Joes in the world and not win if the head man doesn't know or care about the sport he's coaching.Check the coaching history of the 3 schools you mentioned in the above post and a lot of the same names will keep popping up.I'll say it again good teams follow good coaches, that's no coincidence.Buna may not have been a power with Sutherland coaching them this year, but they would not have resembled the team they were under the present coach.

Maybe not.  But you cant make chicken salad out of chicken s***.

  2. It ain't the x's and o's, it's the Jimmy's and Joe's.

Good programs follow good coaches around??

HJ was successful before Sutherland got there.

Kountze was successful before Joubert got there.

EC was successful before Hargraves got there.

High school sports are cyclical.  The gene pool determines a lot.  Numbers determine a lot.  Coaching is important but all you have to do is look around at the schools that have solid programs and you'll see that they have survived coaching changes.

    Excellent post.

  3. Kid could play but you don't build programs around 1 kid.Coaches make high school programs successful and Buna hasn't really looked for a coach who could make them competetive lately.Check the really good coaches in this area and they have been successful wherever they are.Sutherland,Joubert and Carter are just a few examples.Boutte and Hargraves would be if they ever go anywhere else.If I were in Buna I would be trying to hire the young man from West Hardin. You would see a turnaround in just a few years.

    Reality check here!

Sutherland could have coached Buna this year and it wouldnt have made a difference.  Players win games. Plain and simple.

  4. You cant talk about Texas high school football tradition without including the Brownwood Lions or Plano Wildcats.  Both schools have won 7 state championships, most in Texas.  SLC might now have 7 as well.

    Others of note:

Permian, Stephenville, LaMarque, Austin Westlake, Temple, Celina, Houston Yates, PNG, Schulenburg, Waco, Abilene, Wichita Falls, Cuero, Refugio, Ennis, Sealy, Dangerfield, Converse Judson, WOS, Pilot Point.

  5. The baseball team plays at 10am on Thursday aginst C.E. King...were just gonna 10 run them so we can finish by 11-11:30 then i mean its teenagers driving so im sure that we can make it to the game by 2-2:30. Mark my words the baseball team will be there.

Man you will be cutting it close.  Ive made that drive and it isnt short.  Lets say you do ten run them, game is over at 11:30 at best.  You get out of Sour Lake by 12, at best.  Your looking at least 3 1/2 to 4 hours till you walk into the drum.  Game is over by then.  Dont risk your life driving like a maniac to a basketball game.  I know its important to you but it isnt worth your life.  Have faith that they will make it to the title game, and then take all the time you need on Sat to drive to Austin.

  6. I agree JCFan...Big Sandy ought to put this one away.

    Best of luck Wildcats!

No offense, but you must not know anything about MM.  BS will have to play way above their heads to hang in this one.  And yes i have seen both teams play, as well as WH.  MM is not only the best team at regionals, but the best team in 1A.  Doesnt mean they cant be beat, but it would be an uspet.

  7. Theres nothing to do in west hardin so they sit on the computer all day long and suck up there coach and player.......Listen I am going to say this again and for the last time..........Brandon is a great player at his level......he's good I will say that..but he's good at the level he plays on ok.......The coach is a great coach I will give it to him but just becasue they have one good season yall are all stuck up there rearends....I mean west hardin is having a good year...Congra I am glad that another team in our area is doing great I really am......But please people stop trying to play them out to be the greatest.......thats why they have made a player of the year in each classification becasue everyone knows brandon will not win it against the 5a player,4a,3a, or 2a......He's not better than Brown, hes not better than Kris richards, hes not better than Ryan Donahue, hes not better than Tramaine thomas....thats just the way it goes......and the overall player of the year that meant the most to his team is prob. Ryan Donahue..........The best player in the AREA is no doubt Brown......so just deal with it.....

What about the last 3 years when he was playing in the toughest 2A district in the state and putting up the same stats?  Does that count for anything?

  8. I agree with Yep yep.......look when ozen was great they had all the talent in the world they didn't win becasue of boutte they won becasue they had talent.......boutte is a great coach but when you got talent you win thats just how it is......I mean when ozen lost perkings, young, dabney, look what ozen has done now they have struggled very bad.......look at dallas lincoln when they lost chris bosh and there stud guy they have struggled.......thats why I think the silsbee coach is the coach of the year he lost his stud guy and has put together a good team this year that has a bunch of good strong athletic guys........they don't have any studs on there team......they just play together and play team basketball and that comes from the coach.....

That doesnt mean Fuller is not a great coach though.  I was just trying to give some love to other coaches who get overshadowed because of lack of talent.  Jackson, Henry and English are good examples.

There are lots of great coaches in our area.  Those who have won state titles and those who havent even won district titles.  But year in and year out the team with the most talent usually wins, not the team with the best coach.

  9. I disagree, yepyep.  Without leadership, guidance, direction and someone to pull a team together, talent doesn't always win.  I've seen the personal interaction between Coach Fuller and his players.  Those guys give everything they've got for him, and I don't think it would be the same with just any coach.  They know he cares about them and has their best interest and growth at heart.  He gets my vote for coach of the year, but I do admit, I'm partial. ;)  I know there are other great coaches in our area, Coach Foster at Big Sandy for one.  East Chambers' coach has obviously done great things this year, too.  I don't believe West Hardin has ever won a district championship in basketball in the history of the school (they were co-champs like 30 years ago or something like that).  I think they've been to the playoffs once and lost in the first round.  In my opinion, this year for West Hardin has been the right combination of talent, teamwork, attitude AND great coaching.

I dont disagree with what you are saying.  But coaches get to much credit, and too much criticism.  Talent wins games, plain and simple.  Do you think HI or Evadale or Bridge City would have made the playoffs with Foster, Fuller or Sutherland coaching them this year?  No.

If WH is not as good next year(which is likely), will it be because of the coach?  No.

Why didnt Scotty Phillips or Lucky Gamble win while at WH?  Both of them are two of the best football coaches in the state, and both have won state championships.  I am not trying to argue with you, as we both agree Fuller is an excellent coach and more importantly a good man.  I just know there are lots of very good coaches out there that dont get credit because they dont have the same talent at their school as others.

  10. WH's Kent Fuller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this man has class , good attitude, enthusiasm, and leads a great life.  i think that he is the best role model for the boys. should i say the whole school.

and without a doubt the best coach that i have personally seen come through West Hardin in a very long time

Talent helps.  It would be hard not to win with that group.  Same for Boutte, Hargrave and Joubert.  They are all good coaches, but talent wins MOST games not coaches.  Any of those mentioned though would be deserving of Coach of Year.

  11. yepyep, apologies man. I was reading a post by someone else and saw your name. My bad.

Point still being that none of these guys know BL can't play with the others because he hasn't had the chance in HS ball.

ltown, stop saying he can't and couldn't when you dont know.

I hear he has done well at AAU ball against players of all calibers.

Speaking without knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

No problem, apology accepted.  Its my fault for responding to ltown and the other guy.  I just added fuel to their fire.  I was just trying to defend Letsinger.  They are just uninformed hs kids running their mouth, though we probably all are guilt doing that in high school.  Let this thread die.

  12. It sickens me to see ltown and yepyep bash someone they don't really know and have no reason to bash. Fact is that the only way they would ever know what they are talking about is if BL got to play a season on a bigger team against bigger opponents and that is not going to happen.

One thing I know from this post is that neither could hold a light to him in class and character.

    Great job Brandon.

Slow down there partner.  I didnt and wont bash any kid.  I am defending Letsinger, not bashing him.  Ltown is the one who has a problem with him.  Go back and read again my friend.

  13. your naming pro players that come through once in a life time......ashton hall yeah 3a level could play with the big boys, Kountze play in the whata-burger classic every year against the big 5a and 4a schools....shaq is 7ft you don't get players like him he's a beast...Everyone knows Brandon is not going to be a Shac,Rice, and payton....your naming dudes that once in a life time plays like how they do....Name me 4 schools that Brandon has played against at the 5a,4a,3a level thats in the playoffs right now..........ok then thank you becasue you can't.......you can sure name who Donahue who has played against and Brown has played against..........What y'all don't understand is brandon is a good player.....but its 1a people.....played against the 3a and 4a top teams around the area and see how he does oh wait we already saw what happen last week get beat by 17 and he scores 13 points against a mediocore WOS squad.......Its a different level he couldn't go out and score 20 points a game against the 3a and 4a teams like Donahue can.....or like what brown does to the 5a and 4a rank teams....its just not going to happen....the speed of the game is alot faster and the guys are alot stronger....if hes a stud like yall say he is.....at the 1a level then he should be just flat out dominating....theres no way you lose to wos by 17 if you got a so called dominating player as yall call  brandon is......

First off, Kountze played in the 3A and lower division of the Whataburger tourney.  Get your facts right.  And they do the same when they play in the Bagg Insurance tourney.

How about the 23 pts Letsinger put up against Splendora(a 3A playoff team) when he was a freshman.  How about the Quadruple Double he had against Kountze(who went on to win state that year) as a soph.  How about Newcomer of the Year as a Freshman in a tough 2A district.  How about 1st Team All District as a soph in the toughest 2A district in the state.  How about 1st Team All District as a Junior in the toughest 2A district in the state.  How about leading his team to a 28-2 record as a senior, and will for sure make 1st Team All State this year.  How about a well respected 3A coach who had his team in Austin a year ago(he might know his stuff) saying Letsinger is better than anyone 4A Lumberton(your school) ever produced.  HOw about playing with those mighty big school boys on the AAU circuit during the summer and holding his own.  Are these good enough for you?

  14. First of all I'm from westbrook 2nd of all Lumberton has had some pretty good players come through there.....not just basketball players but good athletes that played basketball...........Like when they had Lincoln and WOS in there district when Immanule Mccleroy played at Lincoln and Norious Maghee played at WOS and they beat WOS that year and had Shane chapman and Matthew Sebek........and also Lumberton did make the playoffs in 2000 and they lost to the team that went to the state championship game that year and and that team was TJ........and Lumberton had 3 or 4 guys on that team that played college sports after that year....so don't give me that........Like i said Brandon is good....but Brandon can't stiff Browns Jock what is brandon ranked in the Nation thank you very much he's not rank......ozen has 3 guys better than Brandon, Wos has a guy better than him, silsbee has a guy better than him, Central does, West Brook does........Don't get me wrong Brandon is good but he not great.....he's great at the 1a level...........Brown and Donahue they have proven how good they are against top notch teams........

You sure know a lot about Lumberton.  But like you said, your from Westbrook right.  You and bball07 must be brothers.  Both of yalls logic is flawed, big time.  You are trying to put down a kid because he plays at a lower level.  That means he must not be good right.  If thats true, then Shaq wasnt any good because he played at the 3A level.  Same for Ashton Hall.  Same for Terry Teagle(i am sure you dont know who that is).  Same for the Johnson brothers who played at Morton on the 1A level.  Same for Walter Payton and Jerry Rice because they only played 1AA football.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because your only a hs kid and dont know any better.  But Letsinger could start for any team in this area and more than hold his own.

  15. I was impressed with Letsinger.  He could wind up being a very good D1 combo 1/2.  If he played for us (HJ), I wouldn't worry at all about our state title prospects this year!

Tramain Thomas is so athletically gifted, it's not even fair.  He has excellent basketball instincts.  I hope he plays basketball, not football, in college.  He may have the best shot at the NBA of anyone in the area.

Ryan Donahoe had the best year of any of the POY candidates from a personal and team statistical standpoint.  I am biased (HJ fan/parent); maybe I am wrong; but look at what Donahoe has done on a torn meniscus and despite the concussion and broken nose.  He is a pass-first PG by nature who has taken on the primary scorer burden because that's what his team needs from him.  He plays through pain every time he cuts or lands on that bum leg.  He is incredibly courageous.  I wish him a state title, another All-State selection, flawless arthroscopic surgery and rehab.  There's no telling how far he can will himself to go in basketball and in life.

Good post.  Donahoe is probably the MVP for this area(does more for his team than anyone else and makes them better), but he is not he best player in the area.

  16. He has been offered.......hasn't decided.

    Lamar

    SFA

    Nicholls

San Francisco was at their warm-up game.

Has also received offers from these Juco's:

    Panola

    Angelina

    McClenan Co.

    Interest shown by:

    Ole Miss

    Marshall

Lets compare these schools in a year to where Thomas and Brown end up.  Donahoe is good, and more importantly a good kid.  But quit telling me he is the second coming of Steve Nash.

But wait.....you HJ fans know more than these college coaches who are recruiting these kids.  Silly me.

  17. I will say this showing you complete respect.......YOU ARE CONFUSED MOM!!!!!  Donahoe is still playing with a bum knee, broken nose and a plastic mask.  He would run circles around Letsinger!!!  Letsinger is a great player, but he is not in the same league as Donahue, Thomas and Brown.

And you know this how?  By watching one game.  Get real.  If Donahue is so dang good as all you HJ fans say, why hasnt he been offered yet?  Why isnt he ranked in state?  Brown and Thomas have been offered(both Juniors), and both are state ranked.

    You HJ fans are amazing.
