Having lined up for a 60+ yard FG last week and then making a long FG Friday night, plus the howling gale at the kicker's back,  I thought it was a good call.  Chain-Gang Defense is your insurance policy.  If the FG was good, it would be a genius move.  Who would have thought Friendswood would not only be able to score, but also convert a 2-point conversion?
The score you speak of was the real heartbreaker.  It looked as though we had found their number for several series in a row and then the defender looked liked he MIGHT could have intercepted it only to break up the pass and have it land directly into a receivers hands!
 2.
Although i didn't agree with the call, it isn't m place to critisize. Trust me, coach t has been around the block. There was a good reason for him to do it. Personally, I would have run another play. On that drive, lindsey was running through them. We had third and goal from the 9. Id bet that we score. But the way beasly was kicking, I see why they tried the fg.
That was my only complaint....the way Lindsey was running if they wanted to keep the ball in the middle of the field...the run him up the middle.  Worst case the FG attempt is a few yards closer.  I do understand that a bad snap etc can happen and why Coach T did what he did.  If I had any questions it would be about not going for it on 4th and a chain link the second time...we were punting into a very strong wind.  These games, although not an ideal outcome as far as W-L record, will benefit the Mustang players and Coach T.  They have played and fought through two very good games....I hope that these bitter defeats only make them want to taste and savor victory even more!
 3.
We always win the really tough games early, then lose them late in the season. Maybe this is that trend turning around... :)
That would be nice!!  If WO-S can cut down on the penalties they will be fine.  They have the bye week to work some kinks out and 3 more games to get ready for district.  Another positive is our kicking game.  WOS kicker can put it in the back of the endzone and it is nice to even have the OPTION of a longer field goal....and he still has some time to improve.  BTW...Even before it went into OT....that was a loooong game!!
 4.
just something to think about...from Bmt. Enterprise..."Thompson said he is fortunate that Thomas' age discrepancy was caught before he played in a game this season. Thompson was a part of the staff in the early '90s when the team had to forfeit games and ended up missing the playoffs because failing grades were changed."...so anything could have happened...and did not play in Nederland game because of an injury?Read more: [Hidden Content]
I don't really follow your question but I think you are maybe suggesting that WOS was fortunate that JT was injured and did not play in the Nederland game??  I think this was caught before the media got ahold of it because JT was not even on the sidelines during the Nederland game.
 5. Hope it is not an age issue that the SCHOOL discovered....it will be talked about for a month
 6.

IMO this thread should be locked,  12 pages is enough talk of this young man, I think everyone that needs to know, knows he is not playing this year.  Just let it go.
Part of the problem is that WO-S is probably THE highest profile team on this board, and simularly in the media in general, so, news (whatever it is) makes big headlines and discussions. Just part of the deal. Thats how it works. A low profile school/team would not be so scrutinized.
ECBucfan nailed it....if it were MOST other schools in the area, the coach would be lauded for "doing the right thing" above winning by telling perhaps the best player on the team he will not play instead of sweeping it under the rug.  However, many are calling for a Salem Witch Trial and digging for something that is not there.  Who was wrong in this matter?  Not the school and aside from that...I do not know!!  All that I do know is that WOS  and their players are not wronged by perhaps later having to forfeit games and their opponents are not wronged by a ineligble player perhaps deciding the outcome of a game and it never going discovered.  As for who falsefied the documents....I am sure that will not be laid to rest because the school could have paid dearly.  However, the school did what it had to do by making sure the playing field for its opponents was fair, as well as making sure their own players efforts were not in vain.

That's not a good look to have his business out here like this.
skipper, how old were you when you graduated? Not sure what you mean by your last statement. I mean if I'm in his shoes, I would fill shame that it's being said I'm a 20 year old in High School. He is too old to play sports and wil be 21 going to college as a freshman. sounds like this is a private matter that is being discussed out open forum.

I bet if this woldnt have been caught until the 2nd round of the playoffs and all of WOS after winning round 1 was sitting home debating this it would be so innocent or private of a matter.  Sounds to me like it was only found after Coach T was double checking some things and happen to discover it.  I mean it was after week zero it was found.  Sound like he could have just a easily not done the double check and it could have not been discovered.  I understand the praise for finding it and getting it resolved I dont under the lack of concerns as to how easily it could have not been discovered.
I may be wrong but I believe it was found before Week 0.  JT was not on the field during the Nederland game nor did I see him on the sideline.
 8.
How do we know this is the only athlete at WOS? :-\
To answer your question....I am pretty sure he is not the only athlete at WOS.  I have seen several other students at WOS that appear to be athletes.
 9. I am sorry....I didn't know you wrote the bio on Dan Hooks.  Please accept my apology.  I didn't know that you had watched SEVERAL WOS games AND played against him....that must make you 1 in a million.  Ripping officials always get results.  Didn't know who I was talking to.  I let it go.....thanks for the advice.
 10.
First of all I would like to congratulate both teams on a hard fought game. WOS is stout and should not have any problem blowing through their district this year. Second of all I would like to give props to the Dogs for making adjustments especially late in the game to move the ball on a very good stang defense. The Nederland Defense deserves some props for making some big stops when it counted. As for the officiating, If I was a WOS fan, I could not bring myself to whine about any questionable calls since the last 30 years danny boy has made sure that 90% if the calls go your way. A loss is a loss so man up and accept it for what it is. By the way, My prediction on this game was spot on.
Dan was a great coach and I hate that he retired.  I admired his passion for the game however, I do not THINK butI KNOW that his will was not imposed on the refs.  If anything it went the other way.  Had you watched a few WOS games you would know that it is not possible for 90% of the calls to have gone the Mustang's way.  Congrats to both teams on a hard fought game....Ned as always is very disciplined and makes you pay for any mistakes.
 11. I don't doubt that Nederland can win.  However, some of these scores that Nederland is going to put up seem a bit lofty (35, 28, etc).  It's been awhile since Nederland has put up that many points against the Mustangs.  Has the Nederland offense improved that much or has the WOS defense gotten worse?  I think we are looking at a lower scoring game.  I understand that WOS may face the injury bug on defense but I have to go with ther Mustangs 20 - 13.

I love WOS and trust/hope that this is the right move.
I guess success is in the eyes of the beholder. What goal does a team have to achive to be called successful. Some would consider a 500 season good.Others...winning district or just making the playoffs would work and anything after that would just be iceing on the cake. Why is it that WO-S fans and others ( not all ) have to have at least three rounds deep or better to say that WO-S had a successful season? Some say WO-S has not been successful in 3A because they have not won state yet.Sense you didn't define successful Stangfan I thought I would rant a little and i'm not saying you are in any of the groups above.I agree about the ball control but there has only been a few seasons that WO-S IMO has not been successful.
Gunho...that is why I had successful in quotation marks.  I meant it to be kind of tongue in cheek for some of the same reasons that you state above.  Probably a poor choice of words on my part.

 14.

I think that any great coach recognizes what offensive plays and/or schemes work best with the athletes that he has. Coach Thompson has been in this business for a long time, and if he does change the offense, it's because he thinks it will suit the players he has the best.
Completely agree.  Sometimes coaches will impose a system on a team regardless of whether they have the personnel to run it successfully or not  (WO-S made that mistake in 2001).  I trust Coach Thompson NOT to do that.  Our returning QB (Salter) is better suited for a rushing style offense as opposed to the spread.  Plus, I can see the Mustangs running the spread part-time and make it all work.
Griff, from what I hear, there will be a bunch, maybe 100%, "I". I think our line is going to be much bigger this year and will be boasting the state power lifting champ. This might be the reason for the change. I don't think anyone knows better than Cornel what kind of athletes we have so I have faith that whatever offense we're in it's the best one for the team.
The 2000 offense wasn't flashy but we hung our hat on defense and field position.  I think (not worth much) that since we got our rear handed to us by Ennis in the championship game, our focus had been on a high powered offense rather than the basics.  I think if WOS gets back to defense first, and a ground focused offesne with the ability to throw the ball....it is a recipe for success.  The game is shortened, the D isn't on the field as much; which leads to field position and points on the board.
 15. I am sorry but the whole "drug free zone" is comical.  An illegal drug is an illegal drug..period, the end.  So, in some "zones" it is more illegal than another?  Are you more drunk in one zone than another?  If you are in possession of something illegal, then it is illegal....rather than "hey, it's illegal but this the REALLY illegal zone".
 16. I think a change is in order.  While they have had some success in district, they haven't been the offensive juggernaut they could have been with the offensive skill players that have come through the program the last several years.  I trust Coach T to make the right decision.  I am sure WOS will be in the spread some....
 17.
Heck yeah....track coaching is a piece of cake....you don't have to know anything....everyone knows how to come out of the blocks, "jump" a hurdle, develop a workout that trains the kids for their race without overtraining them, how to pass a baton in 3 different relays, how to get kids to show up to RUN!!!!!, anyone can do it....why don't you come out and coach them?  I am sure they will turn all the kids over to you....
Had I been able to ask the question in person, you could have told by the tone of my voice that I was asking and in jest showing my ignorance to the sport...."Im not trying to be funny but it SEEMS...." because I did have a friend that never practiced but always did well.  Sorry if I offended
 18. I never ran track but someone tell me exactly how much coaching is involved?  I am not trying to be funny but it seems like from the tack side of "track and field" it is "run like you are on fire".  Again...just wondering.  Because I had a good friend that would just show up at meets when I was in school and take home the goodies.
 19. By numbers alone Nederland should win this game (overstating the obvious).  I always look forward to this game and think that the Mustangs will again prevail.  Many returning starters and great young talent to fill the voids.
 20. I think the WOS coaching change was political from the fan stand point.  Coach Thompson ending up as head coach means a very smooth transition for the WOS players.  He has long been the backbone of the program and that is why there was such an outrcry at even the hint that he might not get the AD/HC position.  I think WOS will hold their own against Kville.  I was proud of their effort last year and think the scoreboard will reflect a different outcome this year.  I wish the best for all three programs and hope the transition is smooth for the players sake.
 21. The only person I know on the committee is Michael Washburn.  I would think he would be a voice of reason.
 22.
OK this post will tick alot of you off but I dont care. First, what does it matter? Even if you know the names it dont control who they wil hire. So what if tony dungy applied? What does that line have any revelance? People have no patience on something they have not a single bit of control over. And what good does it do for one media outlet to get the list? Its only to say  the dumbest lines on tv or in print ever, "you saw it here first". Mommy is so proud. Why does this happen every single time? Thete is a process in place. Let the peopke do their jobs and remember if you dont lije it, get out and vote instead of crying over a keyboard that the big bully superintwndent let you know the applicants. Stop and consider what could happen to a coach whose named is leaked to be interested in another job. Now his school feels disrespected but he didnt even make it to be a finalist. now he possibly loses out on both. Just because some outside media or people in the media truly only doing this to feel important for 10 minutes. Do what you were hired to do Mr. Colbert, make the tough decisions for the district and not worry about pleasing those who really dont know why they are crying
I would expect a little different take on this from you.  There are countless things that go on that we have no control over but would like more information on.  For example a trial and the jury's verdict.  No, there is nothing we can do about it and there is a process in place.  However, it may be something that hits clost to home and we want to know if the process was followed correctly and use that information to help make up our own mind if the verdict was a victory or an injustice.  Therefore we can get out and vote for a different judge, law changes etc. if we feel the need to do so.  So yes, we would like the media to report it, otherwise the media doesn't serve much of a purpose.
 23. What kind of memories?  The last time UT had a ground game?  Hopefully that will change this year.
 24. It will not sit well with me.  I have talked to many others and they feel the same way.
