2011 Record: 10-4 Overall, 5-0 District (District 21-3A Champion, 3A, DII Regional Finalist)

Even with the steady hand of long time assistant Cornel Thompson taking the reigns, everyone knew that 2011 would be a year of transition for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs.  And early in the season, the strain of that transition showed.  However, as the season progressed coach and team grew more comfortable, resulting in the Mustangs' first trip to the Regional Finals since 2005.  But the Mustangs, buoyed by the return of 13 starters, don't appear to be satisfied.

Offense: Spread
Returning Starters: 6

After spending part of the 2011 season in the I formation, Mustang fans will see a return to the more familiar spread offense.  Returning to trigger the offense will be senior quarterback Jimmy Salter (1st team all district, 141-244, 1819 yd, 20 TD; 95 carries, 360 yd, 6 TD rushing in 2011).  There will be a bevy of backs looking to replace the graduated Britton Lindsey at running back.  Senior Ja'Marcus Rhodes (30 catches, 550 yd, 9 TD in 2011) will be counted on to lead a Mustang receiver corp which will also feature seniors Rashon McDonald (2 catches, 32 yd, 1 TD) and Tramain Anderson, as well as sophomore Deionte Thompson.  The Mustangs will boast an experienced offensive line which will feature senior tackles Jerquis Beasley (1st team all district in 2011) and Dylan Brackens, as well as junior center Austin Rutledge.  They'll be joined on the line by senior guard Elvis Hubert and sophomore guard Paul Hebert.

2012 Defense

Defense: 50
Returning starters: 7

Seven members of the Chain Gang defense which averaged just over 15 points a game return for the 2012 season.  Most notably, the Mustangs will again be strong at linebacker as 21-3A Defensive MVP Daniel Woodson returns for his senior year as does 1st team all district linebacker Joe Lynch.  They will be supporting a line which will feature senior defensive ends Trayvon Blanchard (1st team all district in 2011), and Colin Janice (1st team all district in 2011) and nose guard Jhayllien Monette (2nd team all district).  Spelling them will be senior defensive end Will Moore.  Junior Quinton Tezeno (1st team all district) will anchor a secondary that will also include junior Ar'Tevian McDonald.

2012 Special Teams

While junior Robinson Cano will handle the point extra attempts, the field goal kicking will likely be handled by Beasley, who hit a school record 8 field goals in 2011.  Rhodes will be doing the punting as Tezeno (1st team all district punt returner in 2011) will be the primary kick returner for the Mustangs.

2012 Key Games

The Mustangs, after a two year hiatus will renew the "Orange Bowl" rivalry with Little Cypress-Mauriceville to start the season on August 31st followed a visit to the Reservation for the first time since moving to 3A and the first ever visit to the Thomas Center in Beaumont against Central.  Hamshire-Fannett will be the first district opponent on September 28th and the Mustangs close the regular season at Silsbee on November 9th.

They will be.  It seems where they are short right now is on assistant coaches.  And it looks like they will probably lose another as early as Thursday with Coach Hancock possibly moving to East Chambers to take the boys' head basketball coaching position.

The opening paragraph says that the 2011 season was the first time since 1995 that WOS made it to the regional finals.  WOS made it to State in 2000 and the Semi-Finals in 2005 before falling to State Champion Wimberly.

Your correct.  That should have said 2005.

I knew better, just didn't proof better.
