Comments On High School Playoff System

I had the opportunity to see and talk with my old coach (Walter Yates) and his old buddy former NBA'er Luke Jackson. They brought up some things that opened my thought s up on the playoff system. Three to four schools get picked in the 3-a, 4-a, or 5a schools for playoffs. Let me break this down a little deeper. You can be a  3rd or 4th place team and make the playoffs! Is that really a true accomplishment? Maybe in today's standards it is looked at in a favorable way. But there use to be days when you would have 3-5 team ties and there was a playoff to see who really deserved it.
Thanks to true ol'schoolers for keeping it real.

But times have changed and I can accept it but you just can't fool everybody, if you know what I mean ;)

Honestly I think its ok..It gives some kids a chance to touch the playoffs that probably never would..It also gives the playoffs a true "NCAA March Madness" feel...Kind of like a #16 seed playing a #1 seed in the first round, or a 2 versus a 15...Any given night, you know? I know I HATED that darn 1st round bye after winning the district, before they added a 4th team! That was TORTURE! 8)

My thoughts are that I don't have a problem with 3 teams advancing. Four is a bit much. But the real problem is when you have some districts with just 4 or 5 teams and 3 or 4 of those get to advance to the playoffs. Even 21-5A where they have just 6 teams, 4 of those advance.

To me, any scenario that allows a team to qualify for the playoffs with a losing district record (not so much overall record) is a farce!! There will actually be some teams qualifying for the playoffs with only 2-3 district wins out of the 8-12 games they play in district. That is wrong!!

Gone are the days (my era) where only the district champion advanced. :'(

Dove- this "everybody is a winner" and "nobod should ever feel left out" are two lefty propositions that have no place in basketball (and a lot of other places too)  At the rate we are going, it wont be long until everyone is in the playoffs because it's the "fair" thing to do.

i like the top 2 advancing.  beyond that, i don't care.  looking at a district like 21-3A, where Silsbee and HJ have ended up proving to be the best two teams in region three on several occasions over the past few years, it would be a shame to only allow one team from the district advance to the playoffs.  but that being said, there are very few districts in the state where the 3rd place team is talented enough to make a deep run in the playoffs.  and 4 teams is overkill.  maybe not in a 10-team district, but certainly in a 5 or 6 team district.
I too came from the winner take all era, and had to play HJ 2 yrs to find out who would make the playoff. Lost both yrs and never got to see the floor in a playoff game. But life goes on. But I have to say 2 teams should go but 4 is way to many.

15% is the percent cut that the UIL gets off of the top for every football and basketball playoff game (although I saw one form that may indicate it is now 16% for basketball) played.

So this is one where it is a little bit of socialism combined with a little bit of government getting its share.

Aggies had the best scenerio.  3 teams at the most, but even more than that it should be based on the number of teams in district.  There are teams that will make the playoffs that have a losing playoff record.
Nash, you are correct too, it is a "leftist:" agenda where everyone can feel good, everyone gets a ribbon, that is how our society is becoming very very fast.
WOS, I agree too, UIL wants more of a cut and when you play more games you will have more money.
But for 3 teams to go to playoffs in a 4-5 team district or 4 teams in a 5-6 team district is wrong.

One team is NOT enough, no doubt about it. I remember Nederland losing to Bmt French 15-14 (something like that) when only one team made the playoffs, and French tied for the State Title (in FB), and Ned sat at home.

Four is waayy too many, and should not be allowed in a 6 team District, EVER! When has a 4th place team ever won more than one game on the playoffs?

I can live with 3 teams (especially in an 8 team district), bc a team may be dealing with an injury. the kid comes back mid season, and the team is drastically better. Then they have an opportunity to make something happen in the playoffs.

I've seen some 3rd pl teams (Ozen FB this yr) make deep runs. Haven't seen that happen (yet) in basketball. Maybe someone knows of a 3rd pl team making deep bball runs?
But what about back in 2007 when there were 3 teams in 21-3A that were in the top 10 in the state.  I think there is the case for 3 teams in the play-offs.  Especially when you consider that some teams are late bloomers and don't peak until the latter half of district play.

How about you have to have a .500 winning percentage to atleast make playoffs, under .500 should be a no no!!
That would not work, You would have more teams playing ,like Vidor, Playing a bunch of 1a and private schools early in the yr, to pad there record..

He is talking about district records being .500 or better, not overall records.

    • Tomball takes wild 2nd game 8-6. Both teams had 3 E's. Tomball gave up a late lead but first game pitching star Sampson nailed a 3 run homer to push Tomball to victory.
    • My understanding is that the falsification of records was the crime that he was convicted of… but for it to have been a felony act, it had to have occurred in the furtherance of another criminal act. The prosecution had to first prove that the criminal act of falsifying documents had occurred. IF the jury believed that records were falsified, they were given three possible criminal acts… any one of the three would allow a felony conviction. The instructions stated that for any of the 34 charges, all twelve of the jurors had to agree that records were falsified, but they also had to believe that the records were falsified in the furtherance of at least one other, different crime. Six jurors could believe that Trump was falsifying records to avoid paying taxes… the other six could believe that it was skirt around election laws. The jurors didn’t have to agree on which of the three alleged criminal acts Trump was trying to further by falsifying records, just so long as they agreed that a) the falsification occurred and that it b) occurred to help him cover up another crime (for which he wasn’t charged and never proven to have committed or to have even occurred, for that matter).     Complete pile of crap as a prosecution, in my opinion.     But, we shouldn’t cry if our nominee is the kind of man who bangs porn stars while his wife is at home with the kid, then tries to buy her silence, then breaks the law in regards to falsifying documents to hide the evidence of the coverup.    If you’re wondering why falsifying those records might be illegal, it’s this. Money paid to your attorney for services performed can be deducted from one’s taxes as a legal expense. If the money is paid to a person to settle a personal claim, then the amount would be taxable-the falsification would have been done to avoid taxation. On the other hand, if campaign funds were spent to pay hush money and the records were falsified to hide the violation of campaign laws, then the felony occurred.    The bottom line is this…. They didn’t have enough evidence to indict trump on any of those three things that allegedly happened… but they DID have evidence that the financial records were falsified, so they point at these other acts which can’t be proven to bump the charges on falsification to a felony.    And the reason Trump didn’t take the stand is that he can’t go on the record about whether or not he had sex with Daniels… I’m certain that they can prove it and hang him up on perjury too.    The most delicious irony is this… Trump gave his supporters too much credit for their integrity. He thought they’d turn on him if they found out what he’d done, when in reality they wouldn’t have given a care… Trump’s whole falsifying records and quest for secrecy wasn’t even needed… his followers don’t have moral objections to his sinful acts.
    • Wake is about to go from Preseason #1 to the 1st team eliminated
    • The Republican Party is dying because of folks like you who want to compromise with socialists and folks that proclaim “from the river to the sea” in reference to Israel.  I don’t want a party that folks such as yourself want to save, may as well be democrats, which you apparently are. My standards haven’t changed, yours have.
