Is this the only area in Texas where 5A schools routinely play 3A schools?  That was unheard of back in the day; maybe playing one level down, but never two.  The 5A schools have everything to lose and nothing to gain as they are expected to win those games every time.  I just don't understand why a 5A coach would even consider playing 3A teams.

they would play for the competition.  long ago in "the day" (early 60's), in the old system where 4a was the top bracket, 4a Houston teams used to drive to Pineland to play 1a West Sabine.  Those teams also regularly went home with whippings in the neighborhood of 30 or so points.  One year, West Sabine actually played Panola Jr College for their after district warm-up game.  WS beat them by two or so points as I recall.

So yeah, all those teams must have figured there was something in it for them.  Competition better than they got in their own class.
