The following article points out some of the new coaches.

New Barbers Hill coach set to ‘Gage’ players
By Dave Rogers
The Baytown Sun
Published April 30, 2010
MONT BELVIEU – The first official spring football practice in the history of Barbers Hill High School will commence this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

New head football coach Ronnie Gage, a two-time Class 5A state champion coach a decade and a half ago at Lewisville, said he decided to hold spring training to install a new base offense and defense, to find a quarterback and begin developing team chemistry.

“We need to get to know each other and get some basic things taught,” he said.

Gage said he expects 115-120 players to go through drills. He said it “depends on the progress” to determine whether or not the Eagles will hold a spring game to wind up the drills.

“At first, we weren’t going to have it (spring training), but after evaluating it for two or three weeks, it feels like there’s a dire need to get out there and get working,” he said.

Class 4A and 5A teams have the option of conducting 18 spring practices over a 30-day period in exchange for giving up a week of preseason practice and a scrimmage in August.

Barbers Hill moved up from Class 3A to 4A four years ago, but former head coach Don Price never chose to hold spring training.

Crosby is also beginning spring practice today and Baytown Lee and Baytown Sterling plan to begin spring training drills Monday. Baytown’s Goose Creek Memorial will not hold spring training.

Barbers Hill’s Eagles went 5-6 last fall, finishing fourth in District 19-4A and advancing to the playoffs for the ninth time in the past 11 seasons.

One factor Gage had to consider about holding spring training was having enough coaches to staff the drills.

Three new coaches have already joined Gage since he took the job in January.

Defensive coordinator Terry Gooch comes from Lewisville High, where he was on Gage’s staff for the 1993 state championship team.

Offensive coordinator Michael Odle, who comes from Flower Mound Marcos in the same Lewisville school district, was quarterback for Gage’s 1996 state championship club.

Gage’s receivers coach is his son, James, who had been an assistant at Abilene Wylie. He is also working as an assistant baseball coach this spring.

Gage said he is retaining Eagles varsity assistants Steve Owens and Kevin Ellis and has promoted Bobby Locke from the Barbers Hill middle school. He still has several vacancies to fill, he said.

The new coach chose not to retain veteran assistant coaches Jackie Byrd, Dwayne Nunez, Steve Parsons and Clint Riley, a 17-year assistant at Baytown Lee who joined the BH staff last fall. Bobby Claxton left the staff for a job elsewhere.

Whats up with the New Coach/AD running off all of the other coaches in other sports? Is he surrounding himself with yes men? Running off chancellor as the girls BB coach seems a little odd.  I dont have a dog in the fight out there but reading all of these articles in the Baytown Sun has me scratching my head. Seems like Dave Rogers of the Sun too is trying to dig into it as well.

I really doubt he had much to do with it. The board is in control and one of the members is just dying to get one of hi old classmates back in BH. Even though she should not be!!!!!! seems there is only one "YES MAN".

I just hope the school board lets the new coach do his job...
Nothing worse than being told who gets playing time from "blue-bird" parents and the school board.
This seemed to be a big problem with the previous staff.
Good luck to the new coach...
Hope he is successful and that the kids improve under his coaching.

First of all....the fact that you are reading the Baytown Sun as your sole source of information isn't real bright.  Dave Rogers is an idiot......can't even get the facts right.  He is much more concerned about writing an article that is slanted to sell newspapers than in printing facts.

Exactly who are you referencing when you say the new AD is running off all of the other coaches?  Gil Stalbaum CHOSE to retire.  Dwayne Nunez was NOT fired as Head Track Coach (as the Baytown  Sun incorrectly reported), and John Chancellor has apparently been reassigned.  DAVE ROGERS HAS NOTHING TO DIG UP BECAUSE THERE ISN'T ANY "HIDDEN" STORY!

LOL ok whatever you say. I dont have to read Rogers to see that since the new AD/Football Coach came that their the baseball coach left, the track coach left, and the girls basketball coach is no longer coaching. Not to mention Byrd being tossed to the side.  Sounds like to me the girls basketball deal, they set parameters for someone they have in mind while purposely excluding the current coach by putting in the 8 years experience requirement. But I am sure you are right, they all choose to leave on their own haha.

Hey I dont care for Dave Rogers anymore than the next guy, but IF there is one thing its good at, it is digging behind the scenes.

I will repeat myself just to make sure you have accurate information.  The baseball coach was offered a contract and CHOSE to retire.  In fact, Coach Gage was very supportive of Stalbaum and attended every baseball game.  The track coach is NOT leaving.  He was also offered a contract and from what I hear will be back next year.  The girls basketball coach was ALSO offered a contract, was just removed as head girl basketball coach.  Tossing Byrd aside?  Last I checked, he retired several years ago.

You and Dave Rogers can dig all you want.......I think he is pretty dirty so you might want to be careful!

When did it become unusual to see coaching changes when a school hires a new AD/HC  ??? ??? ???
Just curious.
It's not unusual to have change with a new AD/HC. It is unusual when the programs, for the most part, have been very successful.

It's one of those "from the outside looking in" situations.

It is none of my business how BH handles it's business, but since I do not watch Soap Operas, it's the next best thing.

Whats the purpose of offering the girls basketball coach a contract if it isnt for the job he already has and been dang successful in doing? That is kinda like thanks but no thanks. What a joke, no  one would with pride would take that offer.

Yep 4x4....Coach Byrd was at 1st base.  He is a retire/rehire, but that doesn't mean is guaranteed a job from year to year.

As for Coach Chancellor, apparently Coach Gage felt like a change was in order for reasons we probably will never know.  I respect Coach Gage and like what I see.  If you have never been an Athletic Director or, better yet, won a state championship as a Head Coach AND Athletic Director, you might want to reserve judgment.  The man has a pretty impressive record and is VERY well respected throughout the state and not just as a football coach.  If you don't know all of the details, why don't you keep your armchair commentary to yourself and see how things play out next year?

LOL...well since no one knows "all the details" about anything they post here, we might as well just shut the website down then right? I don't know Gage from Adam,  but what I have seen the same type of thing in private business where some new hotshot VP or Manager comes in and surrounds himself with his people..people magically "resign" or what is the politically correct phrase, "they decided to pursue other opportunties" LOL.  We will see how it plays out, should be fun :)

LOL I thought someone on here a while back was complaning that if your last name wasnt a certain one (think may was one) that you didnt have any say in BH...like I said I dont live or know any kids going  there, I just get to read about the soap opera's in the paper...and saw this gem today from the baytown sun.....

two things...
1) i think its great chancellor will be at crosby, a chance to stick it to BH twice a year! ( Nice going guys!)
2)Board member Benny May, who has a daughter on the basketball team, is telling the paper its all but a done deal on the new coach even though the next board meeting isnt until the 7th, ..that they the board gave approval to make this hire without a meeting...(inside job anyone? lol) The new coach is already meeting the girls...haha

Now is guess the next question is, did the daughter get on the wrong side of chancellor and wasn't getting the proper playing time that daddy board member wanted? If so then this all seems to go together.....too funny..maybet his was all part of the gage hiring, agreeing to make these moves to get his job..

New hoops coaches set for BH, Crosby
By Dave Rogers
The Baytown Sun
Published May 29, 2010
Nothing’s official yet, according to school officials, but only formalities remain before the naming of new girls’ basketball coaches at Barbers Hill and Crosby.

Administrative timetables prevent school officials from officially hiring new coaches now.

But Flower Mound Marcus coach Kit Kyle has already introduced herself as the new Barbers Hill coach, says a person close to the program.

Meanwhile, former Barbers Hill coach John Chancellor, who was reassigned as coach in mid-May, has told friends he is headed to Crosby.

Barbers Hill athletic director Ronnie Gage said Friday night, “We still have not made the hire official” when asked about reports that Kyle will be next to take over a program that won Class 3A state championships in 1983 and 1997.

“She (Kyle) may be (head coach) next week. Right now she’s not officially hired,” Gage said.

Friday was the final day of school at Barbers Hill and school board member Benny May said Kyle met with the school’s girls basketball players Friday.

The next school board meeting at Barbers Hill isn’t scheduled until June 7. But May, who has a daughter in the Lady Eagles program, said the school board gave superintendent Greg Poole the authority to make the hire without board approval in its last meeting when the job of girls athletic coordinator was created and attached to the girls basketball coaching job.

The hang-up at Barbers Hill is that the job must be advertised for 10 days before it is filled, May said. That 10-day window won’t close until early next week, he said.

“That’s why it’s not going to be official until Dr. Poole makes it official,” May said.

Board approval is required at Crosby, said Kevin Flanagan, the school’s athletic director. The next meeting, he said, is set for June 7.

Chancellor, who led Barbers Hill to a 29-6 record this past season and whose team won at least a co-district championship in each of his five years there, told friends late this week he had landed the Crosby coaching job which Flanagan said has been vacant since April.

The former BH coach replied to a message asking if he’d been named Crosby coach with a text message Friday night.

“No, not yet,” it said. “Waiting on board approval. Give me two weeks and I will talk to you all you want.”

Chancellor will be replacing Rhea Guillory, whose team was 5-9 and a sixth-place finisher in District 19-4A in her only year as varsity coach. Flanagan said all three high school girls basketball coaching jobs (varsity, junior varsity and freshmen teams) are currently open.

Kyle’s Marcus team was 24-13 this past season, finishing second in District 6-5A and advancing to the second round of the playoffs. She has 366 career wins as a head coach, all at Marcus.

She worked three years as a college assistant for current Texas A&M coach Gary Blair and two years as a high school assistant before being hired as head coach at Marcus.
