St. Pius

Football — St. Pius made an emphatic statement last week, blasting Bay City 42-0 in the opener.

"It's one of the biggest wins we've had outside of winning the state championship game (in 1999)," said St. Pius coach Robin Kirk. "Bay City is a Class 4A powerhouse and we dismantled them. It really validates our program."

St. Pius' defense was the story of the night as the Panthers held the Blackcats to only 20 yards. Defensive end Fred Thompson led the way, tagging Bay City for six sacks. Thompson also caused a fumble and recorded several unassisted tackles.

"Fred was incredible, but so was the whole defense," Kirk said.

Jamail Grimes scored on a 30-yard fumble return after Thompson's big play. Bakari Maxwell also added a second defensive touchdown on a 40-yard interception return.

Offensively, St. Pius only managed 228 yards on the night, but defense often gave the offense a short field, thanks to their big plays.

Jared Espinoza and Howard Risher scored on runs of 10 and three yards, respectively. Billy Noonan also ran for a pair of one-yard scores and completed 6 of 10 passes for 85 yards.

While Kirk and his players enjoyed the win, they haven't dwelled on it. The Panthers have turned their attention to Friday's 7:30 p.m. home opener against Vidor at Parsley Field.

"Vidor is a physical, aggressive team," Kirk said. "They run a wing-T offense, which you don't see much any more, but they do a nice job with it. Our kids are excited about playing Vidor, especially at our place."
